Pączki Day (Detroit’s Mardi Gras) aka Fat Tuesday
Pączki are a tradition in Detroit and other midwestern cities, one that I indulged in for many years. I intended to just keep them as a memory, but I broke down and bought some. Raspberry!
It’s Pączki Day, and in Detroit that means you should be sure to wear your stretchy pants or, as my old friend Denise used to say, your expando clothes!
Pączki, or Polish doughnuts, are eaten on Fat Thursday in Poland and Fat Tuesday in the United States. It’s the last splurge before Lent begins.
When I was still working, my employer provided huge boxes of them with every available filling next to the coffee machines in various areas of the building. Considering that the company is owned by Italians, I thought that was darned nice of them. My personal favorites are custard-filled and lemon-filled, but they are all delicious (and fattening.) Yum!

Year of the Fire Horse
Lunar New Year 2026 falls on Tuesday, February 17th, and celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on March 3rd.
Lunar New Year is the beginning of a new year according to lunar calendars or, informally but commonly, to lunisolar calendars. Because a year of twelve lunar months is about 11 days shorter than a solar year (which determines the seasons).
Lunar New Year is celebrated/observed in many countries, not just in China. In Asia, countries observing Lunar New Year are China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam.

History of WHITE Slavery in the Americas (and everywhere else)
I have read about this, and almost wrote a post about it several years ago, but couldn’t get all the facts together to suit me. A man that I follow on X published a post about it today, and it is so good that I wanted to share it. He is a science teacher, as he explains in his post, but reads a lot about many different subjects, and writes quite eloquently, I believe.
He is:
And this is what he has to say, and he says it better than I ever could.
So I had a student in my class the other day. She is doing post-secondary enrollment and was telling me about her “Black Experience” course. She quoted her textbook, which stated that slavery started in Africa.
I stopped her right there.
Not because I wanted to embarrass her, but because her textbook is flat-out wrong, and somebody needed to say it. See, I am a science teacher, but I also happen to read. A lot. And the actual history of slavery does not start where your college professor told you it did.

Happy birthday, Hartland’s Spiced Rum Tucker!
Nine years old today! Doesn’t seem possible that it has already been nine years, but here’s a trip down memory lane.
Mom (left) and grandma nursing the babies. The babies still had their tails, so this picture was taken either on the day they were born, or the day after. Some Brittany puppies are born with short tails. If not, breeders have them docked by a vet on the first or second day after birth.
My male puppy, yet to be named, about 5 weeks old.
