Hollywood-Worthy Camouflage: Uncovering the Urban Oil Derricks of Los Angeles
Camouflaged “Tower of Hope” derrick at Beverly Hills High School
The tower was constructed to wrap around equipment used to harvest hundreds of barrels of oil a day (as well as hundreds of thousands of cubic feet of natural gas). For years, this fuel provided much of the local school’s annual operating budget, while the added decor offered cover for an increasingly controversial urban energy operation. And it was just one of many such structures dotting the landscape of Los Angeles.

Good mornin’, Lucille. I’ve read stories about the oil in LA, but don’t think I ever saw the last picture. For some reason, stories about the La Brea Tar Pits stick in my mind. Speaking of……….coffee’s ready, ma’am.

Good day to you, Texan! The La Brea Tar Pits and museum are still a notable tourist attraction….

Morning Lucille! I have a photo somewhere of my nephew, niece and I in Cali with derricks in the background. That would have been in the 1950’s.

Good day, Stella! Signal Hill, from which you can see the ocean but it doesn’t have any coastline of its own, was a place that a lot of tourists went in the 1950s. It still has oil derricks. In the 1930s my father worked building many of the derricks in that part of Southern California.

A short personal note…I never capitalize “southern” when mentioning southern California, though the very insistent computer grammar correction always does and did so in my comment shown above.
It’s probably acceptable now, but when I was a child in grammar school that’s one of the things I remember our teacher explaining–you never capitalize directions unless they are part of an official title or name. Whenever I see “southern” capitalized, that nagging instruction trots itself out of my memory bank…aarrrggghhhh! LOL!

Such a pleasant sea view, with the seagulls.

Good afternoon, Reflection. I’ve always loved seagulls and their charming vocals.

Forget Iran; the true battle is for energy dominance. Since 1971, oil prices dictated global economics, with profits flowing to London. Trump is dismantling this petrodollar system, sparking a global shift….

Good mornin’, Miss Wee! I’m getting to the point where the AWFL’s seem to be one of the Top 2-3 scourges on the planet. Coffee’s ready ma’am, so we can begin to drink our trouble away for the morning…..at least. 😉

Good morning all y’all. It’s hot, and we’re just going with simple this morning for breakfast. Featured to go along with the bacon and chewy, tangy sourdough toast, we have light and creamy scrambled eggs. One of the simple pleasures of life is well cooked scrambled eggs. I cannot think of a better example of how much proper cooking technique matters when using the exact same ingredients and utensils. Okay, maybe a steak.

Good afternoon, Tex,
I can sympathize, I’ve eaten too many overcooked scrambled eggs.
And I was responsible for making them!

Hey – they eat! 🙂

Yeah, but ew! No Wee, no. I can’t, I just can’t.

They do. Reluctantly.
Sometimes with ketchup. It makes a dry egg go down easier, and it’s readily available in an emergency.

LOL. Obviously I am not a very good cook because I really can’t tell the difference. 😯

I’m with you on the subject of scrambled eggs.
Unfortunately, my early results looked like the “no” version until I learned to undercook them sightly, cover them, then let them finish without additional heat.
A much better result.

National Never Bean Better Day – Just like our ever-joyful pets, the day casts away the worries and spreads enthusiasm for life.
National Be an Angel Day – do a kindness for someone
National Tooth Fairy Day
National Bao Day – steamed bun
National Surgical Oncologist Day
National Pecan Torte Day – sounds good with coffee…
World Plant Milk Day – almond and oat. Big argument from dairy producers whether they should be called milk

Good mornin’, czarina! I’m going with NO on the milk question. Never seen anyone milk an almond, oat, or soybean. While I don’t want to have one, I sure am glad that we have Surgical Oncologists! Coffee’s ready, ma’am. We have real cream for our coffee! 😉

Have you seen the stories about what almond milk production has done to California? I ain’t drinking that claptrap. If I don’t want milk, I won’t drink milk. How easy is that?

Mornin’ Czarina! Ditto what T said!

Morning czarina. If that bean better day really is beans, I’m in! I could do a good 15 bean soup soon, with good ole cornbread and some mashed potatoes.

Morning, czarina! My opinion is that plant milk is not milk. Steamed buns sound good.

Wish I had a pecan torte to have for breakfast.
Victims of violent based on religion. We see too much of this and still don’t see very much that happens at all.

Good afternoon, Czarina!
I’ll choose National Be an Angel Day, then maybe that will spur on National Never Bean Better Day.
“Plant milk”, the only version that I usually think of is a form of latex secretion from plants, some of which are toxic. They are part of a plant’s defense and healing mechanisms. (Like poinsettias.)
Coconuts actually have a form of drinkable “milk'” but that’s an exception.
It was a marketing coup, for the non-dairy industry. The FDA has not banned its use, but the UK and Europe have.

Good day, Czarina! Blessings on all surgical oncologists. Mine was credentialed in the use of robots. When he suggested I go online and watch videos of robots at work, I told him “No thank you! I don’t want to know!”
I never knew dog and cat toe pads were called toe beans until recently. Like in jelly beans? Seriously? LOL!
World Plant Milk Day…I drink rice milk every day. Love it! And pecans are good for humans. So pecan tortes are definitely on the menu…
I’ve never tasted bao buns, but these Korean chicken+ filled bao buns look delicious…
If governments banned violence based on religion they’d definitely have to get rid of Islam instead of embracing it like the UK is doing.
Be an angel for primary kids and make sure they all get a silver dollar under their pillows in exchange for their lost teeth.
I think it would be a great idea for “National Days” to have a specific flower for each day of the year. I’m sure there are at least 365 flower varieties in the world, though some would be obscure.
AI says: “The most obscure flower in the world is often considered to be the Middlemist Red, a rare camellia that is believed to have only two existing specimens, one in New Zealand and another in the UK. Its rarity and limited distribution make it a fascinating subject for botanists and flower enthusiasts alike.”

Good mornin’, and happy Saturday! Another day I don’t have to study up on world affairs since I’m not running for the Senate, so let’s have coffee. One of my favorite non-fancy pots for outdoors. Keep your head on a swivel and carpe’ your coffee.

Well, not much planned for the day. Got some more housekeeping to do.
