      Thank you! I feel exactly the same way. I wish we would completely abandon the ridiculous convention of daylight saving time. It never accomplished what they said it would: reduce energy consumption. Time to sweep it into the dustbin of history.

        And we’re forced to listen to blathering about how Congress debates yearly the merits of dumping DST (yeah, right…) and the number of people who’re stressed and have heart/panic/asthma attacks during the DST transition. Oh yeah, and the endless/mindless plume of stories about people (in the spring) late for work.

    Afternoon all! The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race has reached the 4th section, the Bering Sea coast. Nic Petit arrived at Unalakleet just before 10 am this morning, winning the First to the Coast award: a beautiful ivory minature sled dog team carved by a local artist and $1500 in gold nuggets. He rested there for 5 hours and left before any of the chasing teams arrived. Here is a short description of his visit to the village known affectionately as “Unk”, it’s 3-letter airport designation:

    The pack chasing him consists of Joar Ulsom, Jessie Royer, and Pete Kaiser, who are about 15 miles behind him. Aliy Zirkle is two more places back, in 8th position.

    The section of trail between Kaltag and Unalakleet is the longest distance between any two Iditarod checkpoints, 85 miles. It is very hilly country which often has deep, soft snow. I’ve not yet heard any description of the trail conditions from Kaltag to Unk, but Nic made the run in under 11 hours at 7.76 mph–a fast pace at this point 700 miles into the race. I’ll be interested to hear how the next 3 mushers describe their run to the coast. They are about 7 miles out, so it shouldn’t be much more than an hour.

    Our rookie, Jessica Klejka, is holding steady in 36th position. She is currently resting at Eagle Island.

    The first photo is of Aliy and her team pulling away. I recognize the back of her parka.

    Now there are 300 miles to go, in the section of the race most likely to have devastating weather impacts. The Last Great Race is on!

    This is so frustrating. I will never give another cent to either NRLC or Oklahomans for Life. I still can’t believe this man refused to say abortion is murder and he’s done everything in his power to fight against SB13.
