Revelry (official Carnival word) began today, called Twelfth Night because it is 12 days from Christmas. King Cakes showed up at offices, it’s the day to take down Christmas decorations & put up all things purple, green & gold. We wear clothing with all these colors at one time, & prepare food in these colors. Carnival coincides with the rich people’s parties & parades to introduce their debutantes to society. This year Carnival season is short; some years it goes well into March.

Lake Superior at second-highest January level
By John Myers Today at 7:10 p.m. (Friday, January 5, 2018)
Lake Superior dropped only an inch in December, a month the big lake’s level usually drops 3 inches, the International Lake Superior Board of Control reported Friday.
The lake now sits 13 inches above average for Jan. 1 and 8 inches above the Jan. 1, 2017 level.
It’s the second-highest Jan. 1 level since accurate records have been kept.
The smaller-than-usual decline is attributed to higher-than-normal precipitation across the region and more water coming out of rivers into the lake. Superior likely will drop until April and then begin its seasonal rise to September, when all-time record levels are possible if the region’s spring or summer is wet.
The level of Lakes Michigan-Huron fell 4 inches in December, when it usually drops just 2 inches, thanks to lower-than-normal precipitation. The two lakes now sit 17 inches above normal and 10 inches higher than Jan. 1, 2017.

I’m surprised CNN didn’t blame it all on global warming (although they mentioned it).
I’ve lived in the Great Lakes, and been a boater, long enough to have seen this cycle before.

Back in 2013, I went with some relatives to Traverse City, and we visited a lighthouse there. The water in the lake was very, very low, and we were talking with bicyclers who were there, and they were saying (of course) that the lake had sunk because of global warming.
In the lighthouse there was a water chart that went back many years. I looked at it and saw that the last time the water measurement was as low as it was in present day was like 1963 or something. It was a cycle that the lake was going through.
Two years later I was reading in the Great Lakes Pilot an article that said…the lake level was rising! (Like it’s on a cycle or something!!) Not sure if they managed to blame that on global warming too or not.

You can blame EVERYTHING on global warming if you have a good enough imagination. Or a faulty enough one.

Someone the other day seemed to think that they would guilt me out by calling me a climate denier.
All they did was make me mad. I felt like pointing out that name-calling isn’t a good way to convince people that they’re wrong. But he’s being indoctrinated right now at my Alma mater, with a minor in “environmental science.” Too bad liberals miss the finer nuances of persuasive arguing.

You don’t deny the climate, and I’m sure that you don’t deny that climate changes, right? The argument is: What causes it?

I tried pointing out to him that the climate does change, and that’s good, because if it didn’t I have no doubt we would all be worse off for it.
But I think he was hung up on the label he gave me.

Same with the Mississippi, it has cycles depending upon upriver conditions. A few back it was at ‘record’ lows, the saltwater wedge that underlies a good part of the river had intruded as far north as just below NOLA. Gloom, doom, a lotta ‘what are we gonna do when climate change dries up the river?!?!”. Then a wee bit later we got ‘record’ high water and the Cassandras were moaning about ‘what will we do when the levees collapse?!?!’.

8000-15000 yrs ago there were no Great Lakes, but a fluctuating Lake Agassiz, which broke through over 6 months to a year after warming, releasing fresh water into the Atlantic, which affected the international currents, cooling the planet to the most recent ice age,(see wikipedia, outburst flood) 7 x more voluminous than the Great Lakes. Seems global climate change can lead to cooling or warming, in this case for 200 years.

Do The Great Lakes have tides? Anytime I’ve lived near the sea, I’ve always noticed the tides. In Scotland, you have to keep watch (the tables are posted everywhere) Because there are a lot of places you can get stuck when the tide comes in. Some causeways have actual wee cabins on top of very tall telephone poles, to escape and climb up to if your car gets stuck. Holy Island is one such place, lots of cars washed out to sea every year!

If they do, they aren’t significant.
I looked it up and got this (on NOAA):
True tides-changes in water level caused by the gravitational forces of the sun and moon-do occur in a semi-diurnal (twice daily) pattern on the Great Lakes. Studies indicate that the Great Lakes spring tide, the largest tides caused by the combined forces of the sun and moon, is less than five centimeters in height.

Hi, Lburg!
For the edification of Stellars…the origins or “Hi”, “Hey”, and “Hello”…
Hi: greeting, 1862, American English (first recorded reference is to speech of a Kansas Indian), originally to attract attention (15c.), probably a variant of Middle English hy, hey (late 15c.) also an exclamation to call attention. Extended form hiya attested from 1940.
Hey: c.1200, variously, in Middle English, hei, hai, ai, he, heh, expressing challenge, rebuttal, anger, derision, sorrow, or concern; also a shout of encouragement to hunting dogs. Possibly a natural expression (compare Roman eho, Greek eia, German hei). Þa onswerede þe an swiðe prudeliche, `Hei! hwuch wis read of se icudd keiser!’ [“St. Katherine of Alexandria,” c.1200] In Latin, hei was a cry of grief or fear; but heia, eia was an interjection denoting joy.
Hello: 1883, alteration of hallo, itself an alteration of holla, hollo, a shout to attract attention, which seems to go back to at least c.1400. Perhaps from holla! “stop, cease.” OED cites Old High German hala, hola, emphatic imperative of halon, holon “to fetch,” “used especially in hailing a ferryman.” Fowler lists halloo, hallo, halloa, halloo, hello, hillo, hilloa, holla, holler, hollo, halloa, hollow, hullo, and writes, “The multiplicity of forms is bewildering ….”Popularity as a greeting coincides with use of the telephone, where it won out over Alexander Graham Bell’s suggestion, ahoy. Central telephone exchange operators were known as hello-girls (1889).
Hello, formerly an Americanism, is now nearly as common as hullo in Britain (Say who you are; do not just say ‘hello’ is the warning given in our telephone directories) and the Englishman cannot be expected to give up the right to say hello if he likes it better than his native hullo. [H.W. Fowler, “A Dictionary of Modern English Usage,” 1926]

I got this in the mail this morning. I think it is good for a laugh. Another gun grabbers fail. The details of the investigation are pretty interesting. 😀
You’ve Got Fail: Investigation into Online Gun Sales Backfires on Gun Controllers
In yet another embarrassment for the gun control lobby, a government investigation of online gun sales designed to determine “whether private sellers would knowingly sell a firearm to an individual prohibited from possessing one” determined that … no, actually, they would not. In 72 attempts undertaken over 2 ½ years, undercover agents trying to buy guns through readily-accessible Internet sites failed exactly 100% of the time to complete a sale when the seller had reason to believe the buyer was prohibited or lived in another state.

Late to the party as usual lately.
Here is today’s painting by Jon McNaughton. I purchased a small copy of this at Hobby Lobby a few years ago not realizing it was by the artist who painted the famous “Forgotten Man” painting.
Have a great day everyone! 🙂 The wind is picking up, and I need to get stuff done in case we lose power. We have a generator, but don’t want to waste the propane on non-essentials I can do now.

Ugh! in my haste forgot the bio:
McNaughton was born and raised in Arizona. His family moved to Utah when he was 14, and McNaughton studied art on scholarship at Brigham Young University. He switched from the art department to the design department in order to skirt modernist leanings and trend toward classical training. He graduated with a BFA in Design with an emphasis on Illustration. He has enhanced his skills by studying the masters and engaging in practice out in nature. He paints using a method called French Barbizon Impressionism, a school of style popular from about 1830 to 1875, which influenced many of the most famous impressionists. The technique employs subtle tones and colors, with softness in the landscapes portrayed. Few people today are painting using this technique, and McNaughton is considered by some to be the premiere French Barbizon Impressionist. McNaughton lives in Utah, with his wife and six children.
From McNaughton’s website: “I prefer to paint pictures that I believe have relevance to what is going on in the world, that make a statement, that stand for something. I hope people will study the paintings and try to understand the deeper meaning. Some of the themes are controversial, but I feel strongly about what is happening in our world today. There are three kinds of people who view my paintings: Those who like it, those who hate it, and those who simply don’t understand. I am especially interested in this last category. I hope my work will create conversation and reach people on a deeper level. I like to use metaphor and multiple levels of meaning to reach my viewer. If it makes them think and feel, then it is successful.”
“When I first saw Jon McNaughton’s patriotic, faith, and Americana art I thought of Norman Rockwell and knew he was America’s Artist for our current generation and crisis. Just as Rockwell painted inspiration into his scenes giving meaning and hope to Americans during the Great Depression, World War Two years and after, Jon McNaughton offers the same hope and inspiration for Americans facing moral, cultural, and political crisis today.” – James Michael Pratt / New York Times Best Selling Author

The problem with the U.K.’s healthcare is Administration! They have way too many very highly paid “managers”, who haven’t a clue about healthcare, but cut corners on cleanliness and decent nurses. It used to be the best at one time, but now any Doctors and Nurses that are any good, come to America! These days, most are foreigners that are not so well trained in the art of medicine.
And a “private room”? LOL! You are put in a ward with all sorts of people, male and female, with only a curtain for privacy, and everyone’s visitors just have a look to see what’s up with you! Some hospitals are better than others, but if you live in the big cities, you better have a lot of money and “private insurance” which is very expensive.

Oh yeah, one of the major hospitals bought a smaller one as part of its megaexpansion and got a free case of onboard MRSA as a freebie. They finally bough a Dalek-looking machine they could put into rooms that fired off powerful UV blasts that were strong enough to fry the mice in the walls. Gets them rooms sanitized but fades the drapes. I was sweating BBs as my son who had the liver transplant had to use this particular Black Hole for tests.

As I pointed out to friends who are medical administrators a couple of months ago – there are only three primary factors in the delivery of “medical care” around the world, whether you’re talking our system, Britain’s single-payer, or a third world mess: you have the diagnosis, the procedures, and the outcomes. Those three are there in some form. Even if it’s yer mama saying whether or not it’s tonsillitis.
The patient is an occasional participant. The patient is not primary. Except perhaps in some ERs.
Period.
That’s my opinion, and I’m sticking with it.
Having been to the bowels of the medical system now in a way I haven’t before, I can guarantee you there is surely a lot of bacteria down there, but how and to what extent helpful digestion takes place is completely another story.
I have no complaints about the care and results I got, obviously but I recognize the reality that even in this country with excellent insurance (and between Medicare and my supplemental, I’m covered 100% except for $183 a year) – even in this country, everyone just bellies up to the bar and you order the special of the day. The reason you order that is because that’s all that is being served.
One of the friends I mentioned is the Director of Imagery at a regional medical center and he acknowledged my point. Reluctantly. And went on to explain how their ability to stay in business (i.e., keep the patient beds filled and billed) is driven by being able to attract a patient stream that has strong insurance.
Again – strong insurance (like I have) and accessibility to medical care are two different things. I can certainly get in the door, but getting in the door does not guarantee quality procedures. The patient’s situation is incidental to fulfilling the mission of the facility. Perhaps not in terms of the individual professional’s motivations but that is apparent in a slow reading of the guts of the procedures and the protocols.
The second administrator I was lunching with was wearing a cheery label/button thing that said, “I’ve been heard!!!!” ( YES – EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!) So I had to ask – who heard you and what did you say to them.
Ah. It was a label/button award to those who filled the survey generated by the administration of the medical center and distributed to all of the hundreds and hundreds of employees. When, and only, when they had completed the survey were they awarded the cheery label/button.
Our system right now is not that much removed from single payer at all. The bells and whistles just aren’t as obvious yet for most of the customers.

Morning Stella, all,
So what you’re saying is that it’s BIG!?
Love the picture and facts. 10% is a HUGE number! So with the other 4 Great Lakes I’d guesstimate close to 40% of the Earth’s fresh water? Wow.
Clouds have broken, sun is shining so off to work. Rain back in Monday, does dampen my ability to work. Glad you all are getting some reprieve yourselves.
Glad he is on our side,
Have a great day y’all!

The Great Lakes contain about 21% of the world’s fresh water, 84% of fresh surface water in the United States. Only the polar ice caps and Lake Baikal have more than the Great Lakes.

Here is the corn pasta recipe I made Christmas Eve the past two years, since the grandsons don’t eat beef. We all loved it, and it is fairly inexpensive to make. Would be good in corn season, but mine turned out just fine. I suppose you could use frozen corn.
Creamy Corn Pasta With Basil
Ingredients
Fine sea salt
12 ounces dry pasta, such as orecchiette or farfalle
1 tablespoon olive oil, plus more for drizzling
1 bunch scallions (about 8), trimmed and thinly sliced (keep the whites and greens separate)
2 or 3 large ears corn, shucked and kernels removed (2 cups kernels)
½ teaspoon ground black pepper, more for serving
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese, more to taste
⅓ cup torn basil or mint, more for garnish
¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste
Fresh lemon juice, as needed
Preparation
1. Bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil. Cook pasta until 1 minute shy of al dente, according to the package directions. Drain, reserving 1/2 cup of pasta water.
2. Meanwhile, heat oil in large sauté pan over medium heat; add scallion whites and a pinch of salt and cook until soft, 3 minutes. Add 1/4 cup water and all but 1/4 cup corn; simmer until corn is heated through and almost tender, 3 to 5 minutes. Add 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper, transfer to a blender, and purée mixture until smooth, adding a little extra water if needed to get a thick but pourable texture.
3. Heat the same skillet over high heat. Add butter and let melt. Add reserved 1/4 cup corn and cook until tender, 1 to 2 minutes. (It’s O.K. if the butter browns; that deepens the flavor.) Add the corn purée and cook for 30 seconds to heat and combine the flavors.
4. Reduce heat to medium. Add pasta and half the reserved pasta cooking water, tossing to coat. Cook for 1 minute, then add a little more of the pasta cooking water if the mixture seems too thick. Stir in 1/4 cup of the scallion greens, the Parmesan, the herbs, the red pepper flakes, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Sprinkle with fresh lemon juice to taste. Transfer to warm pasta bowls and garnish with more scallions, herbs, a drizzle of olive oil and black pepper.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
