    Lake Superior at second-highest January level
    By John Myers Today at 7:10 p.m. (Friday, January 5, 2018)

    Lake Superior dropped only an inch in December, a month the big lake’s level usually drops 3 inches, the International Lake Superior Board of Control reported Friday.

    The lake now sits 13 inches above average for Jan. 1 and 8 inches above the Jan. 1, 2017 level.

    It’s the second-highest Jan. 1 level since accurate records have been kept.

    The smaller-than-usual decline is attributed to higher-than-normal precipitation across the region and more water coming out of rivers into the lake. Superior likely will drop until April and then begin its seasonal rise to September, when all-time record levels are possible if the region’s spring or summer is wet.

    The level of Lakes Michigan-Huron fell 4 inches in December, when it usually drops just 2 inches, thanks to lower-than-normal precipitation. The two lakes now sit 17 inches above normal and 10 inches higher than Jan. 1, 2017.

    Late to the party as usual lately.
    Here is today’s painting by Jon McNaughton. I purchased a small copy of this at Hobby Lobby a few years ago not realizing it was by the artist who painted the famous “Forgotten Man” painting.

    Have a great day everyone! 🙂 The wind is picking up, and I need to get stuff done in case we lose power. We have a generator, but don’t want to waste the propane on non-essentials I can do now.

      McNaughton was born and raised in Arizona. His family moved to Utah when he was 14, and McNaughton studied art on scholarship at Brigham Young University. He switched from the art department to the design department in order to skirt modernist leanings and trend toward classical training. He graduated with a BFA in Design with an emphasis on Illustration. He has enhanced his skills by studying the masters and engaging in practice out in nature. He paints using a method called French Barbizon Impressionism, a school of style popular from about 1830 to 1875, which influenced many of the most famous impressionists. The technique employs subtle tones and colors, with softness in the landscapes portrayed. Few people today are painting using this technique, and McNaughton is considered by some to be the premiere French Barbizon Impressionist. McNaughton lives in Utah, with his wife and six children.
      From McNaughton’s website: “I prefer to paint pictures that I believe have relevance to what is going on in the world, that make a statement, that stand for something. I hope people will study the paintings and try to understand the deeper meaning. Some of the themes are controversial, but I feel strongly about what is happening in our world today. There are three kinds of people who view my paintings: Those who like it, those who hate it, and those who simply don’t understand. I am especially interested in this last category.       I bought a signed lithograph of this framed and beautiful for my DH this Christmas. He loves it! One of my favorites of McNaughton is one he did of Andrew Breitbart holding a target. It’s beautiful as well!

        Roger dat, part of the Obamacare rationale was that YOUNGER, HEALTHIER payees would cough up the bucks to pay for the care of OLDER, UNHEALTHIER parasites who need more care. Geez, whatta great groundwork for whipping up support amongst the kids to off granny and gramps? They could also get their Federal hands on the old folks’ possessions to redistribute amongst their consumptive base, win-win.

          The problem with the U.K.’s healthcare is Administration! They have way too many very highly paid “managers”, who haven’t a clue about healthcare, but cut corners on cleanliness and decent nurses. It used to be the best at one time, but now any Doctors and Nurses that are any good, come to America! These days, most are foreigners that are not so well trained in the art of medicine.
          And a “private room”? LOL! You are put in a ward with all sorts of people, male and female, with only a curtain for privacy, and everyone’s visitors just have a look to see what’s up with you! Some hospitals are better than others, but if you live in the big cities, you better have a lot of money and “private insurance” which is very expensive.

          Yeah well, it’s all fun and games for the young folks too, until you go to the hospital with a minor ailment and get MRSA because the hospital wasn’t washing the sheets between patients. (Anyone remember that horror story out of Britann? Where they were considering not washing the sheets between patients as a way to save money?)

            Oh yeah, one of the major hospitals bought a smaller one as part of its megaexpansion and got a free case of onboard MRSA as a freebie. They finally bough a Dalek-looking machine they could put into rooms that fired off powerful UV blasts that were strong enough to fry the mice in the walls. Gets them rooms sanitized but fades the drapes. I was sweating BBs as my son who had the liver transplant had to use this particular Black Hole for tests.

      As I pointed out to friends who are medical administrators a couple of months ago – there are only three primary factors in the delivery of “medical care” around the world, whether you’re talking our system, Britain’s single-payer, or a third world mess: you have the diagnosis, the procedures, and the outcomes. Those three are there in some form. Even if it’s yer mama saying whether or not it’s tonsillitis.

      The patient is an occasional participant.The patient is not primary. Except perhaps in some ERs.

      Period.

      That’s my opinion, and I’m sticking with it.

      Having been to the bowels of the medical system now in a way I haven’t before, I can guarantee you there is surely a lot of bacteria down there, but how and to what extent helpful digestion takes place is completely another story.

      I have no complaints about the care and results I got, obviously but I recognize the reality that even in this country with excellent insurance (and between Medicare and my supplemental, I’m covered 100% except for $183 a year) – even in this country, everyone just bellies up to the bar and you order the special of the day. The reason you order that is because that’s all that is being served.

      One of the friends I mentioned is the Director of Imagery at a regional medical center and he acknowledged my point. Reluctantly. And went on to explain how their ability to stay in business (i.e., keep the patient beds filled and billed) is driven by being able to attract a patient stream that has strong insurance.

      Again – strong insurance (like I have) and accessibility to medical care are two different things. I can certainly get in the door, but getting in the door does not guarantee quality procedures. The patient’s situation is incidental to fulfilling the mission of the facility. Perhaps not in terms of the individual professional’s motivations but that is apparent in a slow reading of the guts of the procedures and the protocols.

      The second administrator I was lunching with was wearing a cheery label/button thing that said, “I’ve been heard!!!!” ( YES – EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!) So I had to ask – who heard you and what did you say to them.

      Ah. It was a label/button award to those who filled the survey generated by the administration of the medical center and distributed to all of the hundreds and hundreds of employees. When, and only, when they had completed the survey were they awarded the cheery label/button.

      Our system right now is not that much removed from single payer at all. The bells and whistles just aren’t as obvious yet for most of the customers.

        Sharon, I just received an update and am passing it along….. during the Christmas holiday, Judy nee ‘Havskjold’ was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, was rushed into surgery which was unsuccessful and as of Wednesday, has been scheduled for a series of radiation treatments.

        We are holding her in our prayers.

    Love the picture and facts. 10% is a HUGE number! So with the other 4 Great Lakes I’d guesstimate close to 40% of the Earth’s fresh water? Wow.
    Clouds have broken, sun is shining so off to work. Rain back in Monday, does dampen my ability to work. Glad you all are getting some reprieve yourselves.

    Here is the corn pasta recipe I made Christmas Eve the past two years, since the grandsons don’t eat beef. We all loved it, and it is fairly inexpensive to make. Would be good in corn season, but mine turned out just fine. I suppose you could use frozen corn.

    Creamy Corn Pasta With Basil

    Ingredients

    Fine sea salt
    12 ounces dry pasta, such as orecchiette or farfalle
    1 tablespoon olive oil, plus more for drizzling
    1 bunch scallions (about 8), trimmed and thinly sliced (keep the whites and greens separate)
    2 or 3 large ears corn, shucked and kernels removed (2 cups kernels)
    ½ teaspoon ground black pepper, more for serving
    3 tablespoons unsalted butter
    ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese, more to taste
    ⅓ cup torn basil or mint, more for garnish
    ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste
    Fresh lemon juice, as needed

    Preparation

    1. Bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil. Cook pasta until 1 minute shy of al dente, according to the package directions. Drain, reserving 1/2 cup of pasta water.

    2. Meanwhile, heat oil in large sauté pan over medium heat; add scallion whites and a pinch of salt and cook until soft, 3 minutes. Add 1/4 cup water and all but 1/4 cup corn; simmer until corn is heated through and almost tender, 3 to 5 minutes. Add 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper, transfer to a blender, and purée mixture until smooth, adding a little extra water if needed to get a thick but pourable texture.

    3. Heat the same skillet over high heat. Add butter and let melt. Add reserved 1/4 cup corn and cook until tender, 1 to 2 minutes. (It’s O.K. if the butter browns; that deepens the flavor.) Add the corn purée and cook for 30 seconds to heat and combine the flavors.

    4. Reduce heat to medium. Add pasta and half the reserved pasta cooking water, tossing to coat. Cook for 1 minute, then add a little more of the pasta cooking water if the mixture seems too thick. Stir in 1/4 cup of the scallion greens, the Parmesan, the herbs, the red pepper flakes, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Sprinkle with fresh lemon juice to taste. Transfer to warm pasta bowls and garnish with more scallions, herbs, a drizzle of olive oil and black pepper.

    ICE is increasing presence in California because of ‘sanctuary state’ law, says Trump immigration chief

    Thomas Homan, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said that the Trump Administration is preparing to “significantly increase” the agency’s enforcement presence in California. The move comes as a result of California’s new “sanctuary state” law, which took effect New Year’s Day. “If the politicians in California don’t want to protect their communities then ICE will,” Homan said.

    Food stamp rolls decline by more than 2 million in FY 2017

    Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

    Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

    Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
