Peggy’s assessment is pretty much on target.
From the Wall Street Journal:
…. The distance between the top of the party and the bottom has been growing for years, at least since 2008. The bonds between the two have stretched and stretched, and this year they began to snap. That’s the story of the year, that the snapping became obvious. Mr. Trump and the Trumps of the future are the result, not the cause. The establishment does not see this. They think it’s about him. It’s about them ….
When Mr. Trump announced in June, I knew he’d hit a powerful nerve but did not see him lasting as long as he has. He was a product of voter anger, contempt and lowering standards: “We’re entering Weimar, baby.” In time I saw his power. In August I noted: “The traditional mediating or guiding institutions within the Republican universe—its establishment, respected voices in conservative media, sober-minded state party officials—have little to no impact on Mr. Trump’s rise. Some say voices of authority should stand up to oppose him, which will lower his standing. But Republican powers don’t have that kind of juice anymore.” Traveling around the country, “my biggest sense is that political professionals are going to have to rethink ‘the base,’ reimagine it when they see it in their minds. . . . America is so in play,” and the base is “becoming a big, broad jumble that few understand.”
I asserted his appeal was not limited to Republicans. My highly scientific reason is that in talking to Trump supporters it often emerged that they were Democrats or independents.
Happy New Year; let’s get through it together.
Reading the rest is well worth your time.

There is no voice left in The Republican Party that carries any weight or influence for me. Unless Ronald Reagan speaks to me directly from the other side, I’m not even listening.
Seriously, they can’t reach me because they have no credibility. I am not reading what they have to say. I am not listening to what they have to say. I won’t open their mail, I don’t answer their phone calls.
And here’s the point. I am not alone. There are millions of me.
I do want to sent the Republicans a message though. KMA.

If you are talking about the Republican Party organization, I agree. But I’ve always felt that way – never donated to the party, never answered their phone calls or opened their mail, never been a member of any party, for that matter (we don’t register by party in my state).

Yes, well said, and may I add this the establishment said the same about Reagan in ’79.

“My highly scientific reason”. An incorrect thesis is not made correct by an improper methodology. But she still gets airtime and pixels just like King Karl. None of these “smart” people are gonna understand this……..ever. 🙄

Who is left that cares about, heck, even understands the terms incorrect thesis and improper methodology? That would imply there are people who follow the thesis to its conclusion: data does not support it, therefore it is not true. They just latch onto what they want to believe and don’t even bother with the methodology of trying to prove it valid. They proclaim its validity and expect the world to accept their word.
And get damned mad when a pesky few don’t.

You realize, of course, that the remark was sarcasm? I know that Peggy isn’t popular these days, but it doesn’t always make her assessments incorrect.

Maybe I misread her comments but the thesis that the Trump supporters are dems, etc, is not one I subscribe to, hence my pithy retort. 😉

That isn’t the way I read it. I think it is true that he is appealing to Democrats (read Reagan blue-dog Dems) as well as Republicans and Independents.

Can you see Sandia Peak from your room? Yours truly was born at the foot of it, back when pterodactyls still roosted up there.
