Actually, the media was editing what they said even then, to meet what the party in power, again the Rats, wanted said. They received phone calls from LBJ letting them know what he was displeased with, and up until the Cronkite comments, did what LBJ wanted.
In fact, back during the 1918 pandemic the media were severely restrained from what they were allowed to print based on the narrative the president and his minions wanted said.
