One thing you have to take into account is the fungibility of counting coronavirus – or any other pathogen – deaths. Let’s say the victim has a heart condition or COPD, contracts the virus and dies. Did the vic die from the virus or the primary condition that was complicated by the pathogen?
Whomever signs the death certificate makes the determination and there may be external factors influencing the cause of death’s determination. China tends to blame the underlying condition while here we may blame the pathogen or the underlying cause.

Statistics and how it works;
The person had a hangnail in 1987 – the person has Coronavirus when they die.
Cause of death = hangnail.

My stats instructor used to say that statistics don’t lie, people lie.
Remember, this is how we got the “epidemic of raep of college campuses” and it came out later that if a woman had been so much as kissed against her will, the idiot bean counters asking the questions had been checking the box next to ‘raep.’ That’s one way to make your count go up.

Reminds me of my doctors. When they bring up statistics to try and monetize my health, statistics are good. When I bring up statistics to rebut their argument,statistics bad.

Sounds about right.
My doc (not my regular but a specialist 😏) gave me a very contrived song and dance about how statistically I should go with her plan of attack.
When she was done with the horse and pony show I said “Statistics mean nothing to the individual, so if you’re done, let’s talk about me.”
Things went downhill from there 😀.

Yeah, with me it’s my primary care physician. Ther clinic is part of a hospital complex and he serves as the gateway to the real moneymakers, the labs and specialists. He’s hot to test even though I have two non-hospital docs who test specifically – he never even looks at their tests.
It’s about money in an ever-shrinking revenue pool so I have to remind his office that I spent a long time in health insurance and I know how the game’s played.
