Bengal cat “Diego” went to a New Zealand beach and surprised his owner by jumping in and enjoying the water.

…now he’s a big boy and continues his sweet disposition and loves living inside.

I read somewhere recently that purring has a number of functions…showing pleasure is one, but also cats purr in order to keep themselves calm in uncertain circumstances around humans.

I think it’s a tool they use to train us.

They are very cunning! My youngest (nearly 7) is also a former feral but retains more of the characteristics than Simba. He loves to purr and also does a good bit of plaintive meowing, especially when trying to act innocent after an act of rebellion. He looks up at me and in a small kittenish voice asks, “What? Did I do something?” with his lower jaw quivering.

Our previously feral grey cat has always sort of treated us like a motel. She’d be among us but not really with us. She’d stay inside at night or in bad weather. She’d eat here and she’d use the furniture as her furniture but she wasn’t very social.

Over the last year she’s started to sit on us, sleep with us, and beg for strokes. Two of the other cats we presumed were feral have really settled in and made this home and us their b*tches, they really know how to work us.

I think once a feral cat, not a naturally wild one, gets to trusting and sees the advantages of ‘3 hots and a cot’ they settle in and at a point they figure they’ve ‘got’ us they reward us with some attention.

And right now I have a B&W cat standing on my keyboard with his head pushed into my forehead. Feral is as feral does.

The cat is laying on the back of the sofa above my head. The dog is on the sofa with his head in my lap. The cat occasionally falls asleep and falls off the sofa – if she’s lucky, she falls on me and not the other direction.

I love the look on a cat’s face when it is asleep and falls off of whatever it’s on. For a second or two it loses that superior demeanor, looks around to see if anyone saw it and tries to come up with excuses if someone has.

I had a cat who would sleep on top of the record player (obviously a long time ago). It had a plastic cover that was a little flexible and was slanted. He would curl up on it and when he fell asleep he would start sliding off. Then, he would scramble back up and curl up again. He would do this over and over for hours. We used to sit on the couch across the room and laugh ourselves silly.

It’s going to be an interesting few weeks. Some sparrow/wren looking bird has set up a nest in one of our airplane plants on the patio. Normally that wouldn’t be an issue, we just wouldn’t water the plant and if it died, it died; however, our black and white outdoor cat owns the patio.

He can easily get up there, we see him walking on the roof or on the top of the pergola, getting up to the shelf where the airplane plant is. We can’t move the nest either, not only did the bird pick the best possible place for her nest as light, shade in the afternoon and protection from rain are perfect, but if we moved it she’d abandon it and her eggs.

It’s in the cat’s paws now, will he let things be or will he be a cat?
