    I watch this guy’s videos now and then, and this one made me laugh and think of michellec! He lives in Oklahoma (he’s a state police officer) and raises meat goats.

    Yesterday was one of those ‘gift’ days you get when you’re lucky.

    Even though it was foggy, dreary, cool and damp Czarina wanted to go out for lunch. We didn’t know where but we just drove around, settling on seaside town by seaside as we mentally drove the Gulf. I navigated the foggy US 90 while Czarina flipped thru lists of eateries on her phone.

    Sheer providence brought up ‘Shaggy’s’ just as we passed the sign for Shaagies so being hungry and desperate we flipped a U and drove down the road to the restaurant and higher blood sugar. The fog was partially gone off of the land but as Shaggies was over the water there was still some fog on the lower open deck – we were the only ones on the deck other than the bartender and one waitress.

    The restaurant is over the bay sitting between to docking areas and the fog only went up to about twenty feet before it thinned. We could see the masts of the sailboats and some of the superstructures of the larger ships but the fog over the water was thick you could feel the droplets on your face. We ordered a drink and sat there, watching banks of fog roll thru the harbor as the wind picked up, the fog slowly thinning as the sun burned it off. Good drinks too.

    The fog was gone and the sky fully sunny by the time we ordered the raw oysters, you’d never even know the fog had been there. I have videos, sent them to my son in Denver who was cleaning winter off of his sidewalk, if I knew how to send them to the blog I would.

    We spent the next two hours in clear weather, mid-80 temps with fresh-from-the-bay raw oysters and a seafood brunch. It was almost movie perfect. You get a lot of good days on the beach in Gulfport but not that many are as perfect as yesterday was – a gift.

    Just checked my seed sprouting tray. Tomato seeds that I had about given up on are starting to sprout. It’s been about two weeks for them! They are the Belarus Orange 1.

    Iditarod update. Holy bazooka, Batman! The unexpected has happened. Last night, Nic Petit was in control of the race, as he pretty much has been for most of it. He left Shaktoolik (mile 777 of the race) around 8 pm with a 5 hour lead over Pete Kaiser and Joar Ulsom. Some 20 miles out, he stopped to rest, and 15 hours later he is still there. He has been checked on; he and his team are all right. The team has simply stopped. They won’t go. There is no making them go. Therein is the deep secret of dog mushing, the one groups like PETA can’t get around. You cannot MAKE dogs pull a sled. They do it because they want to, and for no other reason. And when they stop wanting to, they stop pulling. There is absolutely nothing Nic can do about it but wait until the dogs are ready. He blew through one too many checkpoints, skipped a little bit too much rest, and now it appears to have lost him this race. How things can change in an instant!

    Pete Kaiser is now the leader in Iditarod and has over an hour’s lead on Joar. And it is a real lead, a substantial lead, not an anomaly. Both teams have reached Koyuk at mile 827, with Pete arriving about 3 hours ago. Jessie Royer in 3rd position should pull in momentarily as she is only a mile out.

    Aliy is in 6th or 7th position this morning; technically she is 7th, but the guy ahead of her has a 2-minute lead and less than a mile separates them. I predict she will “reel him in” (as mushers say).

    This last quarter of Iditarod, known simply as “the Coast”, is a war of competing strategies. The mushers are hugely sleep deprived now, and you can clearly see it in the videos (which I wish I could link for you, as some are outstanding). Sebastian Schnuelle writes about it here:

    We are almost up to Day 8 of Iditarod; the race is usually won on Day 8 or 9. The current race record was set by Mitch Seavey in 2017: 8d3hrs40mins. That record cannot be broken this year, with 171 miles still to go and the 8 hour mandatory rest at White Mountain. The next day and a half will be exciting!

    Good evening, all.
    Has anyone received their Gosnell vid yet? Received mine today (made in Mexico – phooey).
    Not wanting more nightmares, will watch tomorrow. Watching this will be harder than listening to the Lawfare podcasts.

    There are sparrows which winter over in my garage gutters, which are covered. This morning, a sparrow decided to take a long piece of decorative grass in the gutter for a nest. The poor thing, buffeted by the March winds, tried again and again, with no success. She eventually lost the piece of grass.

    My cardinals, who arrived last week, watched the poor sparrow from the telephone line. Could not tell if they were laughing or empathizing.
    My cardinals return every spring and always live in the holly bushes. Have had a cardinal, and holly bushes, nearly all my life. The cardinal’s return is a sure sign of spring’s return. Never fails.

      I haven’t received my video yet, but I know they are sending them out (via email notification). Looking forward (sort of) to seeing it.

      I have cardinals and jays (which are nesting in my lilac bush).
