My old coworker lost most of his chickens because he wasn’t careful. I don’t think he bothered to lock up his chickens at night, and he let them roam during the day. Both bad ideas if you don’t want to feed the wildlife
LikeLike
If we didn’t have the dogs we’d have no chickens. Our neighbor locks his up at night, but the foxes will get them during the day.
He’s even put hot wire around his pen and those wily creatures somehow avoid it or cause it to trip out and then dig under.
His new idea is to dig a trench fill it with concrete and set the poles in it. Way too much work imho for chickens, I’ve told him to just get him a LGD and let them do all the work.

My cousin put hot wire around his pig pen, but I think that it to keep the pigs in, not keep predators out. He also buried the lower part of the fence.
LikeLike
We put up welded pipe fence on most of our pens, so it lasts forever and they can’t root out.
It’s more expensive doing it that way, but you don’t have to worry about the hot wire getting tripped or replacing fence all the time.

We have not had internet for a week and still waiting.on them to fix it. I have to be in a certain spot and hold my mouth right to get service on phone and it hurts my eyes but wanted to check in and say still no baby. Now you know how I feel…..that phone/internet thing, not the other thing.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yep, I’m not a fan of cellphones, especially smartphones, but my old phone took a crap and I couldn’t find a flip phone that wasn’t so flimsy I was afraid a couple of times of opening it that it would fall apart. My only other choice was a smartphone. Writing the post was the first time I had even used the internet on it, but the plan came with internet.
It’s not too smart it took forever to write the post thanks to it automatically deciding my words for me and I missed it changing contractions to contractors.
They finally fixed the internet and tried to lie and say it was on our end until I corrected the young man and told him the first day it went out they had a recording that said they were aware of problems in this area. The second day they thought I had to have a tech call me, one that I could not understand a word he said btw. Then each day after that it was either arguing with them that I had already plugged it straight in to the computer several times and unplugged the router several times or them telling me it was at the tower and they were working on it and would call me with a time frame. A call that never came. Then five families I know of in this area also had no internet all week.
He finally admitted he was saying what he was told to say, but that they had an issue and when they finally fixed the issue it meant updating it to where the receiver we all have on our houses had to also be updated in order to pick up the signal. So now he has to go to each house and update them.
The good thing is construction has started in this area on fiber and max time they say we will have it at our house is 120 days. I can then get faster internet for half the price I pay now and never have to deal with Rise Broadband again.

Wll, I’m still about one mile from the billion dollar hi-speed internet we were promised nearly ten years ago with no sign that we’ll ever be connected.
I’m trying to get Sprint to put an antenna up so we could get questionable service st a lesser price than we’re forking over to Verizon. Wanna destroy ISIS? Switch their comms to Verizon.
We had dial-up at a really low price and it worked for ash-and-trash finctions and as a backup but one day Southern Bell changed all of the various companies’ access numbers to long distance, forbade their use for data and introduced their own dsl service at over twice the other companies’ prices. Meanwhile their fiber optic cable’s buried at the end of our farm road and no one’s hooked up.
LikeLiked by 1 person
My daughter tried Verizon phone, they claimed it would work anywhere, but it barely worked anywhere. This was a few years ago so it may be better now, but luckily then if it didn’t work you had 3 days to cancel.

We purchased their wi-fi hotspot. When it started to malfunction we wentbto their outlet and were told that our only option was to upgrade. OK, since the hotspot you sold us is bad and our only option is to upgrade, then we’ll trade the bad one gir an ipgrade. Uhhhh, no, we were told, you have to pay for the upgrade, you have to be here a year to get a free upgrade.
Soooooooo, you’re telling us we have a bad hotspot and our only option is to rither buy a replacement or use the faulty one for months? Correctamundo, el sucker. They did offer us the option to buy one of their smart phones, a data plan, and use it as a hotspot. Great sales plan…..
Hey Sprint, can you hear me now?

Fiber is now available here through ATT (which I hate). The speed is really good, but the pricing isn’t, and I’m not sure I can justify the switch. Thinking about it.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I’m not a fan of ATT either, our land line is through them.
This fiber is through a private company who partnered with our REC.
We now pay $100/month for 8 Mbps, which is the only internet we can get with the exception of satellite internet. The fiber optic will be $49.99 for 100 Mbps, $63.99 for 500 Mbps and $84.99 for 1000 Mbps.
I plan on getting the lower speed because I figure it will be like going from a dump truck to a corvette. lol

We have ATT on our cells. We had them on NOLA where they…uhhh…worked, but when we moved out here their service stopped a quarter mile from our house. They’ve since upgraded it and we get service out in the driveway on the south side of the house and down by the lake on the notth side when it’s humid and we have a good north wind.
We were going to switch to Verizon until we saw how ‘less than desirable’ their wi-fi service is but as we have landline at the house we kept ATT for when we’re on the road with our flip phones.
Full and fair disclosure: ATT did offer to sell us a $500-ish amplifier we could mount in our attic but we’d have to drill holes in our walls. Also no guarantee how well it would work as it would have to pick up a less than one-bar signal, amplify it and transmit it to our phones.
And the government broke up Bell Telephone why?
LikeLiked by 2 people
ATT didn’t offer us anything for internet, just said they don’t have anything in our area.
For the past year we’ve had to fight them over our home phone and business phone because every month they try to raise our rate and then when we call they say we changed our plan. It finally gets resolved, but it takes 5 or 6 days of calling until you finally get someone who can get it resolved.
I never thought I would say this, but I would get rid of our landline if we could get cell service here without being in a certain room, standing on one leg, with your mouth held just right. It does work though out in the middle of the pasture anytime of the day or night and it works at the bottom of our drive.
The only towers that work at all in this area are ATT towers, but I refuse to give them cellphone business as well and have straight talk that uses ATT towers.

I have good cell service, but still keep digital home phone. I’m not sure why I do, any more, since it isn’t a traditional land line.

I need it for a reliable phone, but the only thing that concerns me and it might be a dumb question, but I don’t know if you can fax with digital?
We have to send and receive faxes for work and we just use our home phone because of how much ATT wants to charge for a dedicated fax line.

That’s a good deal. I’m paying about $100 (before many fees and taxes) for 30 Mbps and unlimited phone.
ATT wants $80 a month for 100 Mbps plus unlimited phone, so it is a better deal, but I have to sign a one-year agreement. The price is guaranteed for two years. It is a better deal, but marginally. I’m not unhappy with my internet speed.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I’m considering switching our phone when we get it, some tell me I’ll hate it, others tell me they love it. It is also cheaper for unlimited phone than what we pay for ATT.

I’ve had phone through the local cable company for a long time. It works just fine, unless you lose power. Not like the old land line that worked with or without power. It doesn’t happen often here, but then I use cell if I have to make a call (like calling the power company!)

Obama promised solutions but let the people down. Is it any surprise that they voted for real change?
America is deeply divided, but it’s not divided between fascists and Democrats. It’s more accurate to say that America is divided between the elites and everybody else, and Trump’s election was a rejection of the elites.

Stella, what I did mean to post under your Guardian link/Comment was along these lines:
I agree with the point complete and am not afraid of the results/consequences of what Trump does; however, I have wondered about a tipping point with regard to general fearfulness of the stew getting hotter and hotter. Is there a tipping point where the general population will react to the higher temperatures, which are in fact very high simply because the conversation and the fight is finally engaged on the real terms of survival.
Actual survival in life-threatening situations (like on behalf of our Republic) will involve much more of what he’s presently delivering, I think. He’s not :”firing for effect” – he’s doing what he said he would do.
I had thought over the past years that I would never support a candidate who did not say, in advance, that he would have scorched-earth policies and procedures towards the entrenched bureaucracies. Perhaps it was a calculated decision – he didn’t talking bluntly about that a whole lot, but he’s actually doing it. Scary and thrilling to watch.
I saw stats the other day that said government employment is down by 10,000 in the last quarter – didn’t investigate to understand, so I don’t know if that is just from attrition. Could well be, considering how bloated it is.

What I think will happen (and hope so) is that the public will tire of the constant “CHAOS IS HAPPENING!!!” headlines in the news, and the ridiculous riots and demonstrations or, at the very least, become inured to them. Most people aren’t that interested in politics, as long as they are well fed, warm, and comfortable. If they aren’t discommoded, or if their situation improves, the overheated complaints about President Trump will fizzle.

SMH He should at least get the maximum plus one day, or whatever it takes to keep him in jail for his whole sentence. This man is a criminal. And, that is all he will ever be.

Yes, he is a criminal, but better than that, he’s an idiot. Best be locked up to protect himself, from himself.

OMA! Sue the NOAA, sharks should come with a warning label. You know, something along the lines of “Hey! You €£¥%# idiot, don’t @&$#% do this!
Then again, we revert back to Czarina’s fav quote: ‘You can’t make things foolproof as fools are so damnably persistent.’

I bought a 16 inch pot for my corn plant. It is now 6ft tall and 4ft across. It started life as a cheap thing from Lowe’s, now it needs its own room. The reason that it has thrived is that it has been left alone so much. Funny, it loves solitude. This is it for my gardening, guess I do miss the real thing. .

People tend to kill plants by over-attending them. I am fertilizing as they are still young fruit trees and extra food, mulch and attention gets a burst of growth and I can shape them. Once they’re off and running all it takes is a bit of spraying and trimming.

Mrs. T started with one corn plant about 2.5′ tall. We now have a full-blown cornfield in the kitchen. Started 15 years ago. But then again, I am originally one of the Children of The Corn from up in the Midwest. 😆 😆

I posted this on somebody’s wall awhile ago on teh FB.
If’n I was running a big medical practice right now, I would go out and hire as many shrinks and psychologist’s as I could, because we would start making more money than we could have ever imagined over the next eight years. If I was running a hospital chain, I would reconfigure my staffing to begin handling multitudes of new stroke patients and rehab.
Just food for thought. 😀 😀 😀

Interesting how the press speculated for weeks before the game as to what kind of political statement she was going to make. Even when she denied she was going to do more than her regular show the press went on about how she was a cast iron Hillary supporter and was just trying to hide the scope of her anti-Trump blast.
Nice show, all her, no politics. Getting to like her more and more.

Byron York: Justice Department demolishes case against Trump order
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/article/2613988
Now the government has answered Robart, and unlike the judge, Justice Department lawyers have produced a point-by-point demolition of Washington State’s claims. Indeed, for all except the most partisan, it is likely impossible to read the Washington State lawsuit, plus Robart’s brief comments and writing on the matter, plus the Justice Department’s response, and not come away with the conclusion that the Trump order is on sound legal and constitutional ground.
Beginning with the big picture, the Justice Department argued that Robart’s restraining order violates the separation of powers, encroaches on the president’s constitutional and legal authority in the areas of foreign affairs, national security, and immigration, and “second-guesses the president’s national security judgment” about risks faced by the United States.
There is a lot more, and it’s worth reading.

… and more!
Finally, the Justice Department noted that even with such a large body of law opposing Robart’s judgment, and in such a high-profile case with so much responsibility on the judge to clearly state his reasoning, Robart “did not confront” the arguments against his position and indeed “gave no explanation why the state of Washington has a high likelihood of success on the merits of its claims.” Beyond that, the state itself, as a state, is not subject to the executive order, and therefore does not have standing to challenge it. And Robart’s order is “vastly overbroad” and “untethered to Washington State’s particular claims” and “extends even to aliens abroad who currently have no visas” and “applies nationwide, effectively overriding the judgment of another district court [in Boston] that sustained the executive order against parallel challenges.”
In fact, while Judge Robart decreed that the interests of Washington State would be harmed by the Trump order, the government argued that the interests of the presidency, and of the Constitution, would be harmed by Judge Robart’s decision. “Judicial intrusion on the political branches’ exclusive authority over the admission of aliens, by violating the separation of powers, in itself constitutes irreparable injury,” the Department argued.
By the end of the Justice Department’s 24-page brief, Judge Robart’s, and the state of Washington’s, argument lay in tatters.
What will the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals do? Impossible to predict, based on past decisions.

I had a great weekend.
Chef is being asked by everyone in the joint, “Who’s the new guy, and why does he work so hard?” Chef knows me, so he just smiles. He knows I give a s**t about the actual business.
I was in the FOH this morning, talking to the entire front-of-house staff — servers, bussers, hostess, and our lazy guy from the kitchen who was out there schmoozing with the ladies instead of working — and asked them all, “So who cleans the windows out here?” because they look like s**t, on both sides of the glass. They all looked at me like I was crazy. It’s as if they expected that a magical window-cleaning gnome did it once a year or so.
All the staff said, “It’s not my job.” My least favorite phrase to hear from a co-worker.
I said, ok. I’ll do it. Someone has to.
I have a guy who’s in the kitchen, black dude (I’m the whitest m’fer there), who must have been blessed with discernment, because he understands. Chef says he works harder since I’ve been hired. And he knows how good it feels to be complimented on work ethic, and probably has an ego, because we all do. So he follows my lead, doesn’t stop thinking and moving and cleaning and making himself useful.
His pops works on the line, and is a John Henry-type worker. This kid’s gonna shine. He wants to be an accountant. I hope he stays in the restaurant biz, because, like his pops, he’s rare.
I am so glad right now. So thankful.
I listed my former bossman on my obligatory “emergency contact list” at the new gig. 😆
He knows it. My new boss is giving him one of his best employees next week to manage the place I just quit. Life is full of surprises, laughter, pain, and — most importantly — love, faith, and hope.

Twelve years ago I lived in a Geo Metro next to a mosquito-infested pond my Grandpa dug a few decades prior. Other people own the land, now.
I had a giant Vietnam-era net I wrapped around my little car every night to keep out the bugs, because it was June, July, and August. I couldn’t run the car and AC every night, because gas costs money.
I spent my EBT in the next town every day, for non-perishable food, and drove back. If I had a camera phone at the time I would have an excellent time-lapse photo of a pine tree growing, as I smoked my weed and hated myself.
You’re all great, to me. It’s why I hang out here.

Yeah, I’m not too fond of psychiatrists. I had one tell me that I was molested as a very young child because of something I told her. Stupid. For a whole lot of reasons. But, I assure you it never happened. That was back when they were telling everybody that.
