Yeah, considering just the Moslem history of the last 100 years stripping, raping and humiliating women is only permitted when a devout Moslem encounters a non-Moslem woman. Let’s see….from what the Moslem Ottomans did to the Christian Armenian women for years to what ISIS is doing to them today, anyone see anything that says civilized behavior toeards non-Moslems, especially women, is in their toolbox?

Okay, a question for all: is anyone here familiar with vacuum sealing food (in jars and otherwise)? If so, what equipment do you recommend? Money is a bit of an object, but getting reliable and hopefuly easy-to-use equipment is more important.

It depends on what food you are vacuum sealing. If it is an acid food or one high in sugar – like jams, jellies, tomatoes, pickles – you can use a water-bath canning method. If it is meat or low-acid foods like green beans, corn etc, then you would use pressure cooker canning. If it’s dry food, use a vacuum sealer that sucks out all the air and seals the bag or container. If you need specifics, I’m sure a prepper sight can give you details.

Only thing I vacuum seal are meat and sone vegetable products to be frozen. Even then I make sure the product is dry before I vacuum the air out of the bag and seal it as if moisture gets into the vacuum mechanism it can toast it…ask me how I know.
Vacuum sealing’s great for items you’re taking, let’s say camping, that you want to stay dry or even store for a period. Food longterm I don’t feel comfortable with.
I’ve tried the specialized vacuum jars and have had some notable failures. Not that many foods I’d trust in plain vacuum storage anyway. I’ve been waterbath and pressure cooking canning for decades so I tend to stick with that and it works.
BTW, if anyone’s looking for a good baseline for SHTF storage look at: http://thesurvivalmom.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/LDS-Preparedness-Manual.pdf

The only problem with canning is the storage space it takes up. I use vacuum sealers for a lot of items. Rice, beans, flour, other grains, items I dehydrate myself like vegetables and fruits. So far, so good. I also purchase a lot of dehydrated foods from Augason Farms. Good quality and good prices. The best price is at Wal Mart website. I also find a lot of useful stuff for camping and survival at this site.

Actually I have one of those too. I have the Ziploc brand and it is great for a lot of stuff I put in the freezer. It does a great job on meat too. For longer term storage I have a large Vacu Seal with the jar attachments.

So, I got my book in yesterday. “The true George Washington – Ford (1896)”
Amazing book.
Here is the E-Copy:
https://archive.org/details/truegeorgewashin01ford
…
In this connection Washington’s sentiments on slavery as an institution may be glanced at. As early as 1784 he replied to Lafayette, when told of a colonizing plan, **The scheme, my dear Marqs., which you propose as a precedent to encourage the emancipation of the black people of this Country from that state of Bondage in wch. they are held, is a striking evidence of the benevolence of your Heart. I shall be happy to join you in so laudable a work ; but will defer going into a detail of the business, till I have the pleasure of seeing you.” A year later, when Francis Asbury was spending a day in Mount Vernon, the clergyman asked his host if he thought it wise to sign a petition for the emancipation of slaves. Washington replied that it would not be proper for him, but added, ” If the Maryland Assembly discusses the matter ; I will address a letter to that body on the subject, as I have always approved of it.”
When South Carolina refused to pass an act to end the slave-trade, he wrote to a friend in that State, *’ I must say that I lament the decision of your legislature upon the question of importing slaves after March 1793. I was in hopes that motives of policy as well as other good reasons, supported by the direful effects of slavery, which at this moment are presented, would have operated to produce a total prohibition of the importation of slaves, whenever the question came to be agitated in any State, that might be interested in the measure.” For his own State he expressed the ‘* wish from my soul that the Legislature of this State could see the policy of a gradual Abolition of Slavery ; it would prev’t much future mischief” And to a Pennsylvanian he expressed the sentiment, ** I hope it will not be conceived from these observations, that it is my wish to hold the unhappy people, who are the subject of this letter, in slavery. I can only say, that there is not a man living, who wishes more sincerely than I do to see a plan adopted for the abolition of it ; but there is only one proper and effectual mode by which it can be accomplished, and that is by legislative authority ; and this, as far as my suffrage will go, shall never be wanting.
…”
Pg. 153-154

BTW, he called the Marquis de Lafayette – Gilbert, or Gil. Jus’ sayin’.

Stella, I have company so I’ve been busy but I love the Chicago pictures. I remember going to the top of the John Hancock Center often as a child and as a young adult. I miss the city that once was Chicago 😦 My friend and I used to go to a Jewish Deli there when we were young teenagers, e’d look at all the specialty shops with things we couldn’t afford and then we would to the observation deck, then one of the museums or the Art Institute, then we’d go to Lake Michigan and talk about how much better the world would be if everyone just thought like a couple of teenage girls 🙄.
So many good memories.
LikeLiked by 1 person
We share some of the same memories – except I’m a bit older than you are. The Hancock wasn’t built yet when I was a teen. When I was attending classes downtown, I spent many happy hours at the Art Institute between class and the late train.

Remember how cheap it used to be to go up into the Hancock Center?
I do remember the Sears Tower being built, in fact one of my friend’s dads was a construction worker there and he would tell us grand stories that I didn’t realize were really mostly tall tales until I was much older 🤔.
It will always be home to me until they burn it to the ground.

I will try that some time. I don’t go to Chicago anywhere near as much as I used to go. I’ve been up in the Hancock once in the last couple of years. Now you can pay ($40.00 ?) to get a “professional picture of yourself on the observation desk with the view of the city behind you 😏. And people were paying it. I was thinking, folks take a picture with your phone, though now that I’m thinking about it I think it had something printed on the picture like “I visited John Hancock Center.” 🙄
