In Scotland in the old days, they used piss to full woolen cloth. Urine was so important to the fulling business that it was taxed. Stale urine, known as wash, was a source of ammonium salts and assisted in cleansing and whitening the cloth.

I had a friend. His vacuum broke down, luckily for him on the very same day he thought that vacuuming was a necessity a Kirby salesman stopped by. He got the poor sap to vacuum his entire front room before he told him that he had no money 😀

“Saved by the bell”. That one is scary. I didn’t know the origins of some of these phrases. Reading it, I was thinking nah, that can’t be real.

You think that’s interesting, you wouldn’t believe how many songs you know from childhood are actually pop music from 200-300 years ago.

Someone found the original lyrics to what was considered lost within the last year or two. Turns out just because you may not know or your friends don’t know, doesn’t mean it’s lost.
“To Anacreon In Heaven”, was the official song of the Anacreontic Society, an 18th-century gentlemen’s club of amateur musicians in London.

A couple of other things I noticed:
1. I have read that the bath water was shared, but that the youngest were bathed first, then the rest of the children, the mother and grown daughters, then father and older sons. This was in the 19th century when people bathed once a week, on Saturday night.
2. Parts of tomato plants are poison, as are parts of potato plants. They both belong to the nightshade family. Also peppers and eggplant.

I saw that they were fast and loose with the timeline, It a German proverb, das Kind mit dem Bade ausschütten. The earliest record of this phrase is in 1512. Once a year baths in the 1500’s Europe? Yup.

So I finished that 220 year old book. There is no way to write a short summary. I’m guessing that in the following years prior to the 1830’s that something happened to where the secret societies were no longer needed to hide what they were doing. Socialist clubs sprang up in most large cities in the US.
The people described in the 1700’s are no different than the people in charge today in their philosophy. They had no thought of the future and didn’t actually believe what they said and taught. It’s just been a magnet for everyone that wanted to get rich without work and have power over everyone else.
“They endeavor to destroy our religious sentiments, by first corrupting our morals.”
Interestingly it describes how the first public school started and failed. It was a school without religious teachings (the Catholics wouldn’t let their children attend BTW) and after a of period of time, parents started noticing their children were …. less moral.

There are very few new thinkers in the world. People just keep doing what was done before, and telling themselves it won’t fail this time.
One thing that really alarms me are the schools. They are much worse than when I was a child. First, they don’t teach thinking, problem solving, even true subject matter, just how to pass a test to get funding. Second, a huge majority of parents don’t care, which allows schools to become even more untethered. Parents see schools as great free daycare.

Just ran across this interesting tidbit about why we eat black-eyed peas for good luck in the new year….
History of the Black Eyed Pea Tradition
May We Never Forget Our Roots & Traditions!!!
By Ron Perrin, Fort Worth Texas
“The Real Story is much more interesting and has gone untold in fear that feelings would be hurt. It’s a story of war, the most brutal and bloody war, military might and power pushed upon civilians, women, children and elderly. Never seen as a war crime, this was the policy of the greatest nation on earth trying to maintain that status at all costs. An unhealed wound remains in the hearts of some people of the southern states even today; on the other hand, the policy of slavery has been an open wound that has also been slow to heal but is okay to talk about.
The story of THE BLACK EYED PEA being considered good luck relates directly back to Sherman’s Bloody March to the Sea in late 1864. It was called The Savannah Campaign and was lead by Major General William T. Sherman. The Civil War campaign began on 11/15/64 when Sherman ‘s troops marched from the captured city of Atlanta, Georgia, and ended at the port of Savannah on 12/22/1864.
When the smoke cleared, the southerners who had survived the onslaught came out of hiding. They found that the blue belly aggressors that had looted and stolen everything of value and everything you could eat including all livestock, death and destruction were everywhere. While in hiding, few had enough to eat, and starvation was now upon the survivors.
There was no international aid, no Red Cross meal trucks. The Northern army had taken everything they could carry and eaten everything they could eat. But they couldn’t take it all. The devastated people of the south found for some unknown reason that Sherman ’s bloodthirsty troops had left silos full of black eyed peas.
At the time in the north, the lowly black eyed pea was only used to feed stock. The northern troops saw it as the thing of least value. Taking grain for their horses and livestock and other crops to feed themselves, they just couldn’t take everything. So they left the black eyed peas in great quantities assuming it would be of no use to the survivors, since all the livestock it could feed had either been taken or eaten.
Southerners awoke to face a new year in this devastation and were facing massive starvation if not for the good luck of having the black eyed peas to eat. From New Years Day 1866 forward, the tradition grew to eat black eyed peas on New Year’s Day for good luck.”

Looks like al-Shabab took Hillary up on her idea.
This is going to backfire on Hillary, #1) All Trump has to say is savage terrorists prefer Hillary as president because she will allow them to continue their barbarism. #2) Show savage terrorists burning effigies of Obama and say savage terrorists hate us no matter what we do. They are a culture at war with freedom.

It always amazes me how newsfolk can change stories by the minute. Last night in town around 1:30 a.m. a 14 year old boy was shot. The very first reports were that the kid was shot in the arm and stomach after ding dong ditching. The official police report said they were called out on a possible home invasion and a homeowner came outside and fired his gun shooting one boy who is in stable condition. That the kids were pulling a prank and doesn’t appear that they were trying to break into the home.
I’ve also been following it on FB and family members and friends were immediately saying the kid was a good kid and was just being a kid. Apparently the news people are now just reporting what family members have told them and have changed the story to the kid was shot several times and shot once in the back.
I wasn’t there, so I do not know what happened, but since when were kids just being kids by roaming the streets at 1:30 in the morning, knocking on people’s doors? Yes, I was a kid and yes I must admit I was guilty a few times of knocking and running(it was called something different than ding dong ditching when I was a youngster), but I didn’t do it to strangers and I wasn’t doing it in the middle of the night.
Also, why are we never supposed to hold parents accountable? I wasn’t with my kids 24/7, but I can promise you I knew where all of my kids as teens were at 1:30 in the morning and it wasn’t out disturbing neighbors.
Whatever happened wouldn’t have happened if these kids had been home at 1:30 in the morning instead of roaming the streets. This town does have a curfew law and for the age of 14 and below it is 11 p.m., so the parents should teach their kids to obey the law. So my non-PC self puts the majority of the blame on the parents who weren’t keeping tabs on their children and should be thankful their children are still alive and hopefully have learned a valuable lesson.
