      Morning Lucille!I have a bone to pick with the author. Ain’t no way I’m calling Delaware, Missouri, and Oklahoma southern. No. I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Missouri, and yeah, they have the Ozarks and when I was a child, that part was still rural and country backwoods, but it sure did not have a southern cultural feel.

      Arkansas barely squeezes in, and Texas, well, they just need their own thing. If you ask me, from the outside looking in, Texas has some swampy bayou types, some southerners with a heck of a cool southern accent, some real western types, some just Texan Mexicans, the cowboys, the oil people, a subset of Crazy People in Austin who rank right up there with the best the northeast and California have, and the whole group is just completely overlaid by something that is unidentifiable in other states.

      I most especially take issue with Delaware. I understand why it’s sometimes classified as a southern state, but we don’t like it, they danged sure don’t. Y’all classifiers stop doing it.

      I can of course make myself available for consultation to y’all outsiders who sit behind computers making these dumb mistakes. Do better.

          One of my sons is friends with a couple in Delaware. He and his wife went for a week, and they did lots of stuff. Everywhere he went, people, especially the women, he said, were truly insulted by his Southern manners. Especially when he said sir and ma’am. They would really tell him to stop it, it was annoying and insulting.

          That right there forever kicks you out of any affiliation with the South. Mamas and daddies still yank ears for forgetting to sir and ma’am and thank you kindly. And I heard tell there’s some grandmas who do worse.

          I know we are known for our manners, but I refuse to believe the rest of the country has just stopped civility also. Those Delaware people, well, the Bidens. Enough said.

            Good afternoon, Menagerie, Wee Weed, Tex, Czarina and Aus!

            I see the war between the states is still in full swing! I’m tickled because it’s a real cultural divide. All that each of you said is true.

            Yet, should we meet, I think that most of us would not be offended by good manners, kind words and consideration for others. Sometimes we have to realize it’s as much a matter of upbringing as it is place, although cultural dominance in a place can reinforce or restrain other cultures. (It’s more difficult to swim against the tide.) Sometimes families carry a culture through generations regardless of place.

            The emphasis on the basic Christian morals of love God and His Son, love your neighbor as yourself, has underpinned American culture from the very beginning. It’s displayed in many facets of our culture, and it is the better for it.

            The illustration of the difference between the gracious consideration of others shown by the friend’s son, versus the Delaware women’s self-important rudeness, shows the stark difference between a Christianity infused culture and the anti-Christian egoistic hedonism that is trying to replace it.

            Menagerie, go get ’em.

        my family and their families were Oklahoman, and we never thought we were Southern. I grew up in Miami, and nobody in South Florida thinks Southern.

        Good day, Menagerie! Woooh! Not to argue, ’cause everyone is entitled to their opinions; however, my Arkansas ancestors definitely considered themselves Southerners. Plenty of them gave their lives for the Confederacy, too. Those family members who remained there rather than moving West like my paternal grandfather did, still consider themselves Southerners.

          Sorry Lucille, I should have included a map for reference. Arkansas is what most southerners consider the western edge of the South, bordering Oklahoma. That’s what I meant by barely squeezing in.

            I read a lot of articles at SOUTHERN LIVING. Occasionally they have something sorta wokish but over all they’re pretty much middle of the road.

            Thanks for the Arkansas clarification. The fam is a bit touchy even as we try to be gracious while being compared to “Deliverance” personages.

      Good mornin’, Lucille! I’m with Menage on this one. I’ve never heard of DE or a couple other being Southern. Now, that being said, we here in TX do consider OK a part of the south. The crazy cousin part, but only if you live in OKC, or south and west of there. The foo-foo in Tulsa don’t much count. Coffee’s ready whenever you are, ma’am.

    I made this recipe for dinner tonight; served with mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. It’s easy to make and very tasty. I used boneless/skinless chicken thighs (what I had in the freezer).
