Our Favorite Sunday Columnist talks about a lengthy column that was all over social media this weekend that details how Bronco Bama and team built their house of cards. It was quite long, but I read it in its entirety and well worth the time to get a better understanding of how we got here. There is a link in the article. The concept is called “permission structure”

I have been making my way through it since finding it yesterday. Right now it’s hitting some nerves for me.

One of my big responsibilities, as I see it, at the Treehouse as an admin, is letting all sides have a voice, whether I agree and like it or not. Of course assuming they do it in a reasonable and respectful fashion, obeying the commenting rules clearly posted.

If we don’t do that, if we don’t examine all sides, if we don’t constantly measure what we believe against every scrap of information we can find, we open ourselves to being brainwashed. There are some commenters who absolutely want no dissenting voices, no discussion, only a rousing, cheering hall of fans.

As near as I can tell from my start on this article T, where they’re going with it is that technology just is another weapon to brainwash people, and the people made it easy.

That’s my problem with those on our side who try to shut people up, rather than debate them. Suppose who and what I believe in begins to slip, a little at a time. And no, no, no, I am not saying that’s happened or making sly accusations, I’m after the bigger point and picture.

Suppose, whether I’m right, left, or centrist, that the most powerful voice and ideas and concepts I embrace begin a subtle, slow change into something else, something leading to bad things, maybe even evil things.

Would most of the working class Democrats of the 1960s have favored abortion as we know it today, on demand, common, killer of millions and millions of babies who are then cut up and sold for organs? Would they have favored not only gay marriage, but the forcing of people of conscience opposed to lose jobs and businesses?

I know that I would have been opposed to a lot of what Republicans have done, especially in terms of wars and military spending a lot earlier had I had certain online sources sooner. Other things too, like vaccines. Nope, I’ll never be one of those who oppose all vaccines, but I have come to believe many things we are giving babies at such an accelerated rate are dangerous. I would have had more sense about food and drugs.

Nope, leaps aren’t made overnight, and we need to constantly educate ourselves with as many diverse and often opposing viewpoints as we can, always sifting for facts.

Apologies if I went in a direction not true to your original comment!

Morning Menagerie. I think everything you said is logical and reasonable. On the vaccine question, I think the problem is that we all trusted our doctors and hospitals when, in fact, they were probably almost as ignorant of facts as we were, taking the word of their local pharmaceutical representatives and sell-outs at the AMA. I still take vaccines that I believe are good for me, and I hope I am making good decisions.
