General Discussion, Thursday, April 6, 2023

Deriving its name from a shortened form of the Latin word ‘mandatum’ meaning ‘command,’ Maundy Thursday (also called Holy Thursday) commemorates Christ’s “new commandment” that his disciples love one another as He has loved them (John 13:34). Maundy Thursday also marks the Last Supper that Jesus shared with His disciples, His prediction of His death, His betrayal by Judas Iscariot, and His arrest at the Garden of Gethsemane.  Matthew 26:

Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.

And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.

The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;

for this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.

    Have a blessed Thursday, Stellars….

“The Last Supper: Judas Dipping his Hand in the Dish” (La Céne. Judas met la main dans le plat)
    James Tissot

For the Passover feast, the apostles (dressed in traveling clothes, like the Jews of the Old Testament book of Exodus, Tissot explains) meet in a room decorated with garlands. During the meal, Jesus reveals that he will be betrayed by one of his disciples; many of them worriedly ask, “Is it I?”

In this image, Jesus hands the sop, or dipped bread, to Judas Iscariot, identifying him as the traitor. Jesus later dismisses him from the company, urging him to be quick about his business.

Here, John the Evangelist, described as the “beloved disciple,” lays his head on Jesus’ shoulder, as is traditional in scenes of the Last Supper. By contrast, Judas, across the table, is already distanced from Jesus, spatially as well as spiritually. And while all the rest of the company wears white, Judas’ robes are dark.

Good morning Lucille. From the plaque “…The Last Supper-on which the rites for the celebration of the Mass are based. Tonight we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the gift of the priesthood.

For me, it’s actually the most moving and poignant of all Masses, especially after the end of Mass. We Catholics love our smells and bells, our icons and statues, candles and altar cloths. When you enter the sanctuary in any Catholic Church, you will see a red candle somewhere near the altar. It signifies the presence of our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, sadly even Catholics, that’s what we genuflect to, not the altar.

After Mass ends, the priests, deacons, and altar servers will take the Body of Christ in the golden monstrance and process around the faithful in the sanctuary and then leave, removing the Body of Christ to the altar of repose until the Easter Vigil Mass.

They will come back and remove everything. It looks like the Grinch in Whoville. The altar is stripped of candlesticks, cloths, and everything not nailed down or too large to carry is taken out. The door of the tabernacle is left ajar.

The sanctuary looks and feels barren. Our Lord has been taken in the Garden. He will not return to the Sanctuary until the Easter Vigil when people enter the dark church with candles lit from the Paschal candle, which is lit from a new fire outside. Slowly as the church fills, the darkness is banished and the light returns. Christ returns in the Mass.

Holy Thursday begins the Triduum for us. Three days we experience sorrow and joy as we walk with Christ to Calvary, and then see His resurrected Body.

Thank you very much for the video.

Good day to you, Menagerie! Thank you for the lovely description. It is humbling to realize that Christ was crucified and died for our individual sins and then arose to show that He has paid for them all. Our part is to believe and follow Him.

Good day, Miz WeeWeed! Does Dr. Fauci have even the slightest inkling of how egregious his words and actions have been? Or does he think he has nothing to confess, to repent over? During this Easter season, may he think of these things and change.
