Letter from Town: The Almond Tree

by D. H. Lawrence

You promised to send me some violets. Did you forget?
White ones and blue ones from under the orchard hedge?
Sweet dark purple, and white ones mixed for a pledge
Of our early love that hardly has opened yet.

Here there’s an almond tree—you have never seen
Such a one in the north—it flowers on the street, and I stand
Every day by the fence to look up for the flowers that expand
At rest in the blue, and wonder at what they mean.

Under the almond tree, the happy lands
Provence, Japan, and Italy repose,
And passing feet are chatter and clapping of those
Who play around us, country girls clapping their hands.

You, my love, the foremost, in a flowered gown,
All your unbearable tenderness, you with the laughter
Startled upon your eyes now so wide with hereafter,
You with loose hands of abandonment hanging down.

Back in the summer of 1969, I left ME and drove to Newfoundland. Being young and newly single, I happened to notice that there were few cars in Newfoundland and since one walked everywhere, the young ladies had wonderful legs.

A fun memory, Geoff. I’ve never been to Newfoundland, though I have family in New Brunswick and have visited Nova Scotia, both to the south of N&L.

“First Year Law Students Could Get This Dismissed” – Alan Dershowitz on Alvin Bragg’s Hotchpot Indictment Against President Trump
    By Jim Hoft – April 1, 2023 2:00 pm

Esteemed Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz joined Steve Bannon on The War Room on Saturday to discuss Alvin Brigg’s indictment against President Trump. The Soros-funded New York City DA announced charges against Trump last week two days after bank statements were released showing the Biden Crime Family were being paid by China for selling their influence.

Good day, WeeWeed! Piece of cake for these uber well-trained pilots. Pride in their abilities fortunately seldom gets to the point of arrogance…at least among the pilots I’ve known. Most are secure in their abilities and remarkably humble.

      • Stella says:

There is a belief of some psychologists that risk takers – such as these pilots – are sometimes psychopaths, but that doesn’t mean that they are serial killers.

        • Lucille says:

While psychopaths ARE risk takers, they also do not care about consequences and are incapable of empathy, love or sympathy toward others. Though many have made faking it into an art form, they eventually are found out.

Imo, it seems a stretch to consider that risk-taking with the ultimate purpose of protecting others is a characteristic of the military mind. Risk-taking WITHOUT purpose, however, is likely to be a symptom of personality disorder.

Understood. Sorry my comment wasn’t more clear.

The study of personality disorders is sort of a hobby of mine. I have no original ideas on psychopathy. Reading (or viewing videos) about personality disorders has been simply out of curiosity, not lengthy study. If there is a scale that measures psychopathy from individual to individual, and if risk-takers are possibly more inclined toward psycopathy, then those are ideas I’ve not encountered before.

Out of the many risk-takers I’ve met in my life, there was no one who, imo, could be classified in any way as a psychopath. A couple of obsessive compulsives and narcissists along the way, perhaps, but no sociopaths or psychopaths.

A lot of thought and study have gone into Dutton’s educated opinion. That’s appreciated.

                No problem, Lucille.

I wish I could say that I have never known a sociopath, but I can’t!

I think a risk-taker should be labeled a ‘risk-taker’ and leave it at that. I have a hard time categorizing neurosurgeons with law enforcement and truly believe the one who operated on my sweetheart’s spine last fall was competent. Actually, the one at risk is the patient – with the prospect of paralysis – who signs the release of liability before surgery [heh!]. But…academics will be academics.
I do like the concept of measuring competency by the ability to make the best decisions under pressure.

This channel, The Vintage Read Show, is out of Australia. The proprietor is a book seller with a calm, undramatic demeanor and a fine mind. She chose to read Harry’s SPARE twice! Along with other books on the couple, she’s done a comparison of information to ferret out the mis- and disinformation plus the lies this couple has put into the literary air in their effort to both make money and to take vengeance upon the royal family.

This is her latest video, posted April 1, 2023. I think her points are very well taken: “The Top 5 Ways Prince Harry BETRAYED Prince William In His Book SPARE!”

      Bingo!

America now has a two-tiered justice system: — Trump is indicted while Clinton pays a small fine — Antifa & BLM rioters roam free while Jan 6 protesters are imprisoned without bail — Douglass Mackey faces 10 years for the same joking memes that Kristina Wong posts with impunity

Good day, Texan! Good and thoughtful column as usual from Clarice.

Getting Trump is the only goal. For the Left that takes precedence over justice any day.

One can only hope and pray that President Trump’s attorneys have their initial game plan securely in place. Contingency plans better be well under way, too.

If a New York judge throws everything out, it’ll be a miracle. If President Trump goes on trial in NY, a conviction is almost a certainty.

I’d be useless in a revolution, but am willing to do what I can to keep our republic. We’d better all be prepared to take some kind of action even if it is only to bombard our congressional reps with missives stating there will be consequences for them if they sit on their hands.

The follow up to the Tom Fitton tweet someone posted a day or two ago. Our side talks about the “Rule of Law”. The other side believes in “Rule by Law”. A big difference and this asks whether state and local r’s will pick up the sword, or will be be taken over under Rule by Law.

The chaos on all sides is varied. It’s hard to tell which things are inter-connected, and not obvious that they are ALL inter-connected.

It seems to me that trying to forecast “next events” based on the most recent and/or the accumulative explosions all around is kind of like trying to decide if the pain a terminal cancer patient is having in his shoulder blade is a bed sore, a new malignant invasion, or because of a muscle he twitched when he was throwing a ball for the grandchildren yesterday.

Or like a woman in the second stage of labor in pain with an ingrown toenail or a tooth gone bad. Hard to tell where where one fire ends and the next begins. I don’t put much stock in such assertions.

I certainly don’t expect any republican anywhere to do anything effective to save our Republic. If they do, I will be pleasantly surprised.

Afternoon All. It snowed last night. I was able to drive to church because it was just a little snow on the ground and I guess the streets melted it. But, I can see snow off in the distance around the mountains. I guess it is snowing there.

I think I am going to take a nap and then plan out what I am taking to church breakfast next week and over the the kid’s Easter dinner. I just can’t believe I am so tired.

    Hope you enjoy the day.
