I was finally able to crate the feral in my garage and get him to the vet. The good news is that although his eyes were frozen during the 60 below weather and both eyes suffered frostbite damage, his vision is unimpaired. I will however have to continue to put antibiotics into his eyes for another three weeks to heal the lesions and ulcerations on his eyes, but after that I’ll be able to release him back into the wild.

He’s a fabulous cat and it’s going to be hard for me to let him go, but he’s a feral and it is what it is.

But, will he still be feral after 3 weeks of human care?

Actually, we had a ‘feral’ for 12 years; she required one trip to the vet for a septic wound we discovered that brought her down to almost zero. After that, she was still an outdoors cat but learned to use a cat door and was fed every day in the garage (but never hold-able). We trapped and moved her to Oreon with us. Really a sweet soul!

          Afternoon weather….

:0) I’m guessing that this guy will be a lot like the feral you had. He’s definitely a sweet soul and he’s pretty trusting, but he definitely doesn’t want to be held. He’d joined my troop of ferals about six months ago and he had already learned that there was refuge & food in the garage across the street, so I think he’ll probably return there and stick pretty close to the area.

Oh, poor baby! Some ferals are simply that for life with just some of the rough edges rubbed off. I’m amazed he will let you put antibiotics in his eyes. Gee has been with me for ten years and won’t let me do that or pick him up without a struggle.

Afternoon Lucille… The first couple of times I tried to put the salve in his eyes, he shredded me pretty good with his claws, but his eyes were in such bad shape that I think he realized pretty quickly that what I was doing actually took away some of the pain, so he quieted down and he hasn’t taken his claws to me since that first week. He’s actually much better than my three furbabies in that regard…:0)
