    CONSERVING ENGLAND’S ORCHARDS

An apple orchard, trees heavy with fruit, might be seen as a quintessentially English image. Indeed, many English Heritage properties have orchards, historic or contemporary, and our expert team of gardeners and landscape experts work hard to care for them.

But apples might not be quite as English as you might imagine … Read on to learn about the history of this iconic fruit and how we look after some of the glorious orchards in our care.

One night last spring…just ONE night…the temp dipped to 30 and froze our pear and apple blossoms. Prior year we had probably 50 apples from our 2 little treees, and juicy pears from the other two.
If it isn’t frost, it’s hail or 40 mpt winds – but every so often we get lovely fruit. And so goes life on the outback! 😉
Have great day, Lucille and all Stellars!!

In 1969 I arrived in Santa Clara valley, since called Silicon Valley. A few years later, I bought a house in Los Gatos with two other guys. We had two trees in the backyard, both grafted on a Walnut root. One tree had tangerines, lemons and limes. The other had avocados and oranges. It turns out that Santa Clara valley was one of the most fertile places on earth for walnuts; unfortunately now as the song goes, mostly parking lots as Silicon Valley. BTW, the house was an Eichler, with a hot tub and pool. Fab bachelor pad. We paid about $300k. It recently sold for $1.6 million.

Good day, Geoff! It’s amazing what homes sell for in California nowadays. Southern CA might be more expensive but northern isn’t too far behind. I just checked out San Jose and came up with this recently sold home

A house built in 1957 located in the 5000 block of Carm Avenue in San Jose has new owners. The 1,280-square-foot property was sold on Aug. 29, 2022. The $1,625,000 purchase price works out to $1,270 per square foot. The property features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a garage, and two parking spaces. The backyard also has a pool. The unit sits on a 6,500-square-foot lot.

You have a great day, too, weather! It’s so wonderful to have enough land to plant fruit-bearing trees.

When I was a child and we lived out in the country, my family had crab apple, walnut, fig and plum trees. Dad planted corn, scallions, peppers, tomatoes, mint, watermelons, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, and probably some others I don’t remember.

Hi, Czarina! Ah, dear Czar. He sure is missed here at Stellas.

Gardening was sort of a tradition in my Dad’s side of the family, being Scot Irish. The men always planted and tended the vegetable/fruit gardens.

My paternal grandfather had a small front yard and no back yard at the last place he rented in Southern California in the mid-60s. So he used his entire front yard for both flowers and produce. The house was on a maybe 25-foot embankment right above the ocean and there was lots of foggy moisture. His gardens thrived. As a boy he worked the family “plantation” in Arkansas, too.

Reminds me of the time I was in TN talking to my friend in FL late at night and she said someone knocked at her door. She lived in a gated neighborhood and she said her grandson always called her before he came so she didn’t know who it was. Next thing I heard was blood curdling screams. I was about to call 911 when she came back on the phone. It was her grandson and when she opened the door, a bunch of small frogs jumped off the top of the door onto them. It was really hysterical.

Good afternoon, aus! We’re at 62 degrees today with a high to be 66.

Regarding your friend’s incident with amphibians, actually, I understand it was reported in the “Frog and Toad”, the local publication spreading news far and wide to the amphibian community. The poor little froggies were all settled in for the night after a delicious supper of snail at the Frog Army Cafe under the front porch. They were not expecting any problems.

Luckily, after the previous evening’s supper, the regional Frog Commission held a planning session on how to deal with the local humans. Frog Leader 1, having experienced a real scare earlier in the week when a human stamped his foot at him, admonished the army gathering to listen up and follow directions. They were to line themselves on door tops as closely together as possible, then pounce off and scare the Jiminy Crickets out of any human creating a disturbance.

It was also reported that at this suggestion the army broke into a collective paroxysm of croaks and chortles. All those present cast their votes “aye” and the rest has gone down in amphibious history.

You can read all about it at the Amphibian Library of Tennessee which is located next to the Frog Army Cafe.

My above comments contains one mistake, the library is called the Amphibian Library of the South. I was informed by the Frog Commission to either correct the mistake or I would be next in line to experience “frogs on the door top” which has become one of the main pastimes of the amphibian community, much to their amusement and human astonishment.

Mornin’ All. 30* with little fluffy clouds so far. Heavy frost. Gotta hurry. The maintenance guy who is going to help me put my mirror on my dressing table is coming in a few minutes. I think I finally figured out how it fits on and it is very easy. Maybe I can get him to put up a shelf in the living room since that won’t take any time at all, So, later gators. Keep warm.

ZOMBIE DEMOCRATS RUN A ZOMBIE NATION
    By Daniel Greenfield – October 20, 2022

Six months after his stroke and a month before Election Day, Lt. Gov. John Fetterman finally sat down for a disastrous interview in which he offered contradictory responses and responded to closed captions. The Democrat Senate candidate still hasn’t provided his medical records even to a friendly press and social media is filled with awkward videos of his campaign appearances.

The Zombie Democrats aren’t an entirely new phenomenon.
