It is still very early to predict where we will be when the next Presidential election rolls around, but it is still amusing to discuss who will be the Republican (or conservative) nominee for POTUS. Here is a brief discussion between Tex and I this morning:
I believe that Ron DeSantis would be a less divisive candidate and, above all else, this governor is DOING things to improve conditions in his state.

Here’s his new plan on how to deal with Joe Biden’s open borders policies that have brought the surge of illegal aliens into the country, in a neatly presented, effectively communicated Twitter summary:
It’s impressive, frankly for multiple reasons.
First, as noted above, it’s effective Twitter communication, fearlessly getting the word out and summing up the precise details for all to read quickly.
Second, it’s well in tune with what Americans are most thinking about in these days of Joe Biden’s failed presidency. . .
Third, it’s action at a time when action needs to be taken. There are red-state governors out there doing some work on the ongoing border surge — Texas, Arizona — but none has come up with as strong a plan of action for disincentivizing illegal immigration from the start as this program has. . .
Fourth, it’s fascinatingly tailored to actions that a governor, as opposed to a president, can effectively do. . .
DeSantis’s fifth point is important, too: E-Verify. Why isn’t that the law of the land? Illegals are getting in left and right on phony work papers and working, taking away jobs from Americans or else depressing wages for those at the bottom of the economic ladder. The main reason they come is for work, but the identifications requirements in place lend to easy forging and corner-cutting. Why not E-Verify? Politicians have been talking about this for years, even Republican ones, but nothing has been done. . .
DeSantis has done a yeoman’s job on identifying what a governor can do on illegal immigration — and doing it. He must have extremely good people, given the well considered nature of these doable proposals.
All of this undercuts badly Joe Biden’s plan for open borders and unlimited illegal immigration. That’s what Americans want.
We can add another hashmark-scratchmark into the “presidential” column for Ron DeSantis for this one.

I very much like our Governor; however if Trump runs, we need to keep DeSantis as our Governor.
Trump owns the GOP in a “hostile takeover” mode. He will be much more wary of the Dems now and he needs to use the House to clean house.

If you think a politician can or will do the things that need to be done you are finished right at the start. The only way things will get done that benefit the average guy or women is for a none politician to get in and do what needs to be done. And even that won’t happen unless there are enough non-politicians in office. That’s the main reason for supporting anyone like Trump.

The point here isn’t to dump on Trump. The discussion is about who can get elected in 2024. Maybe Trump can get elected in 2024. Maybe not. I would prefer Ron DeSantis over Joe Biden, that’s for sure. If you believe there is no difference between Biden (or Harris) and DeSantis because both are politicians, then I would have to disagree.

DeSantis is a politician. Always has been. Pence is a politician. I don’t think there is any difference between them. Trump is a politician now as well. But they hate him. They all do. That’s worth something. As for getting elected, I don’t think it matters any longer. Anyone that might do what is needed will be gotten rid of. And now they know they have to get rid of them before they get elected. And that goes for force if necessary.

We need DeSantis keeping the guard for Florida. We can’t lose the state. It’s as simple as that!
As for President Trump, I still support him but I’m finding it grating with all the bragging on the experimental toxin and the continued pointing out how bad things are but never any solutions.
People think they can beat a rigged voting g system to overcome the massive cheating being done and that’s pie in the sky dreaming. IMO
Remember….in gambling…the house always wins!

And, right up to covid, Trump was doing most all the things we wanted done. And, I think he was taken to the cleaners on that. If he runs, I will vote for him again. If he doesn’t and DeSantis does, I will vote for him.

Trump has a 90% approval from Rs. Nobody, not even Ron, is close. Remember Trump had the vaccine developed for those who needed it; the elderly and infirm. Not mandated; along with strong advocacy for the therapeutics. I’ll take mean over what we have today.

Tex, I’m in perfect agreement with you. DeDantis is proving himself and getting results, as did President Trump. As we all know, President Trump had incredible opposition, and yet look at all he achieved. I didn’t give a damn about his confrontational style while in office, I was sick of lily livered Republicans.
However, the world moves on, and it is all about “What have you done for me lately?” rather than yesterday, and that is how it should be and has to be. Just as the Democrats can’t win running against Trump (still, as evidenced recently in Virginia) I don’t think even President Trump can win running against what the Democrats and his enemies did to him, and us, the last election cycle.
That is not at all to say election integrity should not be highlighted, questioned, insured. But I want more from President Trump than anger at his enemies, and choosing challengers to them based on that anger.
I want what we got from him when he ran before, a call to solve our problems and a plan to do it. And assurance that he can find solid people to back him in his execution. I don’t care about his adamant support of the vaccine. Like our very wise Sharon said next door, my decision to take or reject the vaccine never had a thing to do with his opinion.
Ron DeSantis is executing damned near perfectly a plan that solves those problems on multiple fronts. He is calm, effective, and appears to be able to circumvent opposition, even that of the President of the United States and Congress, on the front end of his actions. He isn’t fighting after the fact, which tells me he not only has a plan, he’s also got some key people in play.
If there is anything at all to be mad about, it is that we don’t have 50 governors like him.

If the people want to clean up the election system , the hardest thing would be to have one Republican and one Democrat assigned to every polling station to oversee from 6:00 a.m. to end of the day delivery of ballots and entry of that data into the central office, signing off and keeping their own records. Mail ballots must be assured in the same way, with nothing being allowed until it is approved and signed by both people who keep their own records. All signed records would have to be kept at the headquarters of the respective parties for later reference.

The genesis of my thoughts on this have to do with a review of DJT’s tenure. What did he do right, and what did he do “wrong”. The thing that he did “right” was look out for us. The people. He exposed the swamp for all to see. He fought against the media, and he was never given a fair shake for even one day. There were literally calls for impeachment from the day he was inaugurated. Since he was not a career politician, he didn’t understand how things worked in that world. He hired people that were not looking out for his, or our interests. Only theirs. Those he did hire that were on the right side of history were gone after just as he was. Flynn was attacked within days of assuming his position. He never was done right. The judge never did let it go. Flynn is “free” only because of a pardon. I also don’t think you should have your family in positions of authority. Most didn’t really think it was a good idea when JFK had his brother as his AG. I don’t think it was a good idea at all that Ivanka and Jared had a portfolio and power in the White House. No matter their qualifications (of which they had none), it wasn’t a good look, and they didn’t necessarily carry out the plan that was best for all of us. This latest look, with the pouting and petulance, and whining truly does remind me of Hillary. She has been rightfully ridiculed for her crocodile tears and when DJT talks about feeling betrayed by Bibi, a year later, it has a similar look. We don’t want to hear about how you got your feelers hurt. We want to know what you learned. What would you do different this time. That’s what we want to see. There’s no crying in baseball, and nobody wants to hear it in politics, for sure. If he comes out and begins to talk about practical matters, personnel, policy, what is he going to do different, I will certainly listen, but otherwise, he needs to act as a king-maker and help us find the next real candidate.

I agree with you that Ivanka and Jared wasn’t a good idea. I think he did it because he felt as tough he needed someone close by that he trusted. Whether or not he agreed with them. Just someone other than the insiders he felt he had to rely on. This will be a problem again if we ever get someone that isn’t a politician. They will have to rely on insiders in order to maneuver around inside the government. The insiders know that and are prepared to take advantage of that. Both when that non-politician relies on there advice and also when he or she doesn’t.

Thought about this one all day. So many pros and cons makes a choice difficult.
DeSantis is well-aware of what he faces in D.C., having been there as Florida’s Representative For that reason alone one’s conclusion must be that DeSantis will not run in 2024, most especially if Pres Trump does run, which I think he will.
One does wish, however, that Pres Trump will go back to his highly successful “I’m With You” campaign and get over being cheated in 2020. We were all cheated, not just Pres Trump. And it certainly has been opening many eyes watching the Democrats and Biden goes down in flames.
