      Hidcote Manor Garden

Video description: “Hidcote is an Arts and Crafts garden in the north Cotswolds, a stone’s throw from Stratford-upon-Avon. Created by the talented American horticulturist, Major Lawrence Johnston its colourful and intricately designed outdoor ‘rooms’ are always full of surprises. (snip) Many of the plants found growing in the garden were collected from Johnston’s many plant hunting trips to far away places.”

One of the articles I read on this property said that until recently when a research grant was provided by a Johnston relative in the U.S., little was known about Lawrence Johnston’s horticulture work or his garden at Hidcote. This was due to the fact that the woman who thought she was going to inherit the property was passed over when he instead donated it to the National Trust in 1948. She then vindictively took all the files she could find and destroyed them. No wonder he didn’t let such a nut inherit such a beautiful place.

Mornin’ All. Going to be a beautiful day here and not too hot maybe. I have FOX and FRIENDS on and they were talking about the border disaster. They said that the facility in Donna Tx is at 1550% capacity. The kids have seen the sun sporadically, only showered once in 7 days, they go to bed hungry, and 108 children have COVID. Usually the foster parents are asked if they can take up to 6 kids, but they are being asked if they would take 26 kids (not a typo). I also wonder how old these “kids” are if they have COVID. With our country in such a state after a year of COVID, and the Feds are having to spend time and money on foreigners.

The corn variety Sierra Mixe grows aerial roots that produce a sweet mucus that feeds bacteria. The bacteria, in turn, pull nitrogen out of the air and fertilize the corn. If scientists can breed this trait into conventional corn, it could lead to a revolution in agriculture. Photo from Wikimedia Commons / CC BY 4.0.

If you are interested in reading about this, here is the article. Try to skip over all of the global warming lectures.

Morning all (for me still, anyway). A gray and cloudy and chilly and white one around here. The thermometer is hovering at 30*, giving hope that the white stuff will start melting soon (please, Lord!). After we had the roof shoveled off a few days ago, the piles left on the ground almost reach the eaves, so a few of the picture windows are almost completely blocked. And it is heavy, icy stuff, so shoveling it down a ways is a backbreaking proposition. The guys who did the roof for us paid no attention to what was on the ground. They buried the back-up generator and the air intake vents for the furnace under 4 feet of snow and ice. We woke up the next day to a power outage that lasted for hours, with no back-up generator operating and no heat from the furnace. The house was COLD. DH spent most of the day shoveling them out while I kept a fire going in the fireplace/wood stove. By evening things were back to normal, but what a day! It has been a heavy snow year for us. Roof shoveling is not usually necessary. It may be June before all the snow on the north side of the house is gone. Yay spring! I’m ready.

Those who haven’t learned from President Trump re how NOT to give an inch to The Swamp have no future in the conservative movement. Core values or issues must never be compromised.

Making a stand early on may bring some personal and political pain, but if you compromise, they have you where they want you and will come calling again and again. Before you know it, you are ONE OF THEM.

There’s a fire on my street, about nine houses away, I think. Looks like it could be a construction site.
