Lighthouse on Lake Hefner, storage reservoir in northwestern Oklahoma City, U.S., that supplies domestic water to the metropolitan area. Completed in 1947, it is fed by the North Canadian River and the Canton Reservoir in Blaine county.

LOVE IT! Used to fish there when we were stationed there in the early 60s. I felt particularly attached to it as we were both ‘born’ in the same year. Much more then than now, until this moment I haven’t thought about it in years.

Reminds me: Czarina was born in OKC and left for Miami when her father got stationed there with his airline. I was in West Palm Beach and moved to just outside of OKC when my dad was stationed there. Years later we both met in Utah. Nah, nothing there…

There used to be places in NOLA that were so French-like that, were you to squint a bit, took you there. In particular there were two bakeries, one specialized in sweet French pastries and torts (it was AMAZING!) and another that had a smaller line of pastries but real French coffees and an amazing line of breads (not that tacky white crap) that were baked in NOLA’s last wood-fired brick ovens.
You could go into the latter bakery and get great coffee or tea, get a whacking chunk of one of a dozen hot, fresh breads with churned butter and potted jams and pig out. They also had fresh soups and sandwiches. In the former bakery you could drive your blood sugar to astronomical heights. I remember getting a huge hunk of a fruit tart the size of a pizza, made with all fresh fruits. Their various glacĂ© offerings could make you cry because you were stuck trying to decide which one you’d eat and they didn’t take credit cards so you couldn’t say ‘I’ll take a piece of every one of them!”.
Alas, the tort shop is gone and, due to problems that became critical in the Quarter, the big bakery moved to the suburbs, got electric ovens and became just another bourgeois bake shop. But we do have our memories.

That sounds absolutely yummy! With all the focus on restaurants lately, I’m surprised no-one filled the fine pastry void.
My favorite bakery up here was the Japonaise bakery. It was a mixture of French and Japanese. Really good.

Post-Katrina we lost a lost of old-line NOLA eateries. I used to haunt the old pre-WW2 neighborhood mom and pop grocery stores that had little restaurants in them. Before the national chains moved in it was all neighborhood groceries and most had little kitchens with a few tables where lunch was served. The store did all of its own cooking with the same recipes they used at home, it was true home cooking and a very personal experience. Gone now, K was the final blow.
There were old traditional ethnic restaurants too, especially German, and many would serve huge workers’ lunches that hadn’t really changed in prep and taste since the 1800s. They started disappearing in the mid-80s as demographics and working patterns changed and the demographics after Katrina finished more of them off. Even those opened by traditional, internationally recognized chefs in the 80s and 90s were hit and are still closing as NOLA slouched toward a Kansas City with a little hot pepper on it menu.
We have a lot of the traditional NOLA cookbooks, the old ones from chefs mostly long gone, and we’ll pass them down. Maybe one of our kids somewhere down the line will resurrect the traditional menu when it’s time for everything old will be new again.

Hmmm.. all the effects of a huge storm like Katrina that you don’t think of unless you live through it.
Really great to have old cookbooks though. It seems like today chefs are just throwing whatever they can find into one recipe so it is different with 20 different flavors, but not necessarily better tasting.

I have no idea why. Only thing I can think of is I remember it from the old Bing Crosby program on the radio. We did radio alone right up to about 1954 when we got a TV.

I knew you were going to say that tune! Love that one. I honestly don’t remember the first time I heard Bing sing, though. But it was probably in one of his movies shown on week night TV.
When we moved closer into town from out in the countryside of San Bernardino County–I think that was in 1951–Dad bought a Motorola TV which looked pretty much like this…
He said he only bought it so he could watch football games, but, of course, being the indulgent Pops he was, us girls took it over. I remember he hated “Your Show of Shows” with Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca, but we always watched it with the volume turned down a bit so he could read the newspaper. LOL! And he did get to watch football.

I remember when we got a tv. Would have been mid 60s. My brother and I used to argue over whose turn it was to change the channel or adjust the rabbit ears.

Yeah, Pops used to drag me up to the ‘Drug Fair’ where they had the old “tube tester” machine. I’d hold the tubes while he tested them.
I wanted to be playing baseball with my friends.
All this for three whole channels. Four when the airwaves were clearer.
But the Saturday morning cartoons, Three Stooges, and Lil’ Rascals were awesome.

Our tube tester was at the 7-11.

I loved Lunch with Soupy Sales. It started here in Detroit:
Lunch with Soupy Sales began in 1953 from the studios of WXYZ-TV, Channel 7, located in the historic Maccabees Building, in Detroit. Sales occasionally took the studio cameras to the lawn of the Detroit Public Library, located across the street from the TV studios, and talked with local students walking to and from school. Beginning no later than July 4, 1955, a Saturday version of Sales’ lunch show was broadcast nationally on the ABC television network.

Here’s me and my nephew with our first television in about 1952. All I remember from back then is the fights and old Mickey Mouse cartoons (think 1930’s.) Later I remember watching Milton Berle’s show with my parents (Saturday night, I think.)

I can remember when we just had radio. My mom would make sandwiches I particularly remember ham and cheese and cocktail onions) and we’d sit down to listen to programs like ‘The FBI in Peace and War’. ‘The Shadow’, ‘Gangbusters’, ‘The Green Hornet’, ‘Dragnet’, ‘Groucho Marx’, ‘Amos and Andy’, ‘Our Miss Brooks’ and many more.
It was family time, we’d be packed around the table in silence, eating, listening and each visualizing the program in our own minds. It just wasn’t the same when these programs transitioned to the TV.

I’m gonna guess it is something like my friend in Cleveland sent back in June. Pix of chartered busses bringing out of town protesters who became rioters.

Trying to help one of my sons out during the COVID by making a child support payment for him. I get on the Colorado site last night and put in his info…poof…it won’t accept it. Three times I try and zilch.
This morning I call and get transferred to a caseworker…they’re all working at home and the one I got is using a scratchy cellphone and has the TV on and her small kids screaming in the background. She finally gets me a number to a 3rd party service they use to take phone payments and I call them.
The 3rd party’s service is nice and clear but it seems they service a number of states and I have to wait 5 minutes while the autosystem drones on about what number to push for what state’s service…and the states are NOT in alphabetical order. I finally get a person and discover that the reason the online system wouldn’t take the payment was that the state of Colorado misspelled his name…how do you misspell a person’s name in the state system when all you have to do is copy it from an official state document?
Anyway, payment made (rare to have such trouble giving a government money) and now he has to go thru the trouble of correcting the spelling of his name.

Just saw a story of some trucker in Australia basically "babysitting" people's sons. For 30 Australian dollars (or whatever they're called) an hour he'll bring the boy to sports games, teach him how to mow a lawn, fix a flat tire, he'll pick and drop off at school, and lastly for an extra charge some other extras (for Mom it sounds like) on nights when the kids are out of the house.
Other than the last item, because I know you are a gentleman who loves his wife and would never betray her, you would be really good at this type of job!

Been thinking and praying about Kyle. A violent group is trying to find out where he is held so they can try and kill him. I would like to post a little prayer for this young man, just a teenager, each night. If I’m not here maybe someone else could post it, or whatever you would like to pray.
I’m just thinking off the top of my head here, so if anyone wants to add or change anything – go right ahead.
Dear God please watch over Kyle, please keep him safe from further harm. May the Holy Spirit descend upon him and all those around him. Please keep him strong and true, and those who surround him righteous in Your eyes. Give those in the jail and justice system around him including his jailers, lawyers, prosecutors, and judges Your true wisdom. I ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, not only for Kyle, but for the glory and honor to God. Amen
