The musician was an especially devoted activist on behalf of America’s military, founding the veterans’ assistance non-profit the Journey Home Project with his manager David Corlew (and contributing $300,000 for the charity from the 2015 Volunteer Jam) and making regular appearances before U.S. troops — sometimes in combat zones like Iraq.
“I’ve played for them in bases in this country, overseas, on ships at sea, in Greenland, and Cuba, all over the place,” he told Forbes magazine in 2019. “And the main reason is to let them know somebody cares.”
Daniels, who joined the Grand Ole Opry in 2008, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.
He was born Oct. 28, 1936, in Wilmington, N.C. Adept on fiddle, guitar, banjo, and mandolin, he broke in playing bluegrass music with an act called the Misty Mountain Boys, and later branched into playing rock ‘n’ roll…
His memoir “Never Look at the Empty Seats” appeared in 2017; “Let’s All Make the Day Count:The Everyday Wisdom of Charlie Daniels” was published in 2018.
He is survived by his wife Hazel and son Charlie Jr.

When the news guy announced Charlie’s death, my thoughts selfishly immediately turned to Stella’s Good News, and who could ever replace Charlie’s Daily Biblical Inspiration, and yet, Charlie’s entire life is a Daily Inspiration.
Grateful to witness a life well-lived.

Back in the day when DH and I lived in Nashville, DH was an engineer for Peterbilt Motors. Charlie Daniels loved his drivers, his road crew, everybody involved with what it took to get that crew on the road and get to the next show and was concerned about their comfort and well being, too.
Urban Cowboy was “in the can,” as they say, Charlie was a full-blast star and was looking for a way to make the guys that drove the semis more comfortable. DH worked with Sid Yoakam and Charlie on an air-ride suspension system and got 3 of his trucks rigged up (experimental at the time.) A kinder man there never was, and would take time for his fans before business – I still have an autographed picture from Mr. Daniels to me because DH was away from home because of him.
I can’t tell you how much this hurts us. I wish I could read him tweet “Goodnight planet Earth” one more time.

I’ve been thinking all day that he was blessed with a good ending. He was mentally and physically active and sharp until the very end. It is a shock to the rest of us, but so good for him.
