Almost forgot, about a month or more ago (hard to tell zactly when) we had one of those NOAA radiosondes they balloon up into the atmosphere land in one of our trees. It’s attached to the parachute by a long, cheap cotton thread that disintegrates after about a month, allowing it to fall to the ground. They’re reusable so they include a return envelope in a tube attached to it, they said they get about 25% returned as a lot just end up dunking into the Gulf.

Our GGS saw it hanging in the tree so I’m going to take it and him to the NOAA office that launched it, some 40 miles south, so he can return it in person. Seems a bit sad to rescue a radiosonde just so that it can be refurbished and sent out again to risk oblivion.

We’re getting that Saharan dust cloud again, every now and then the upper winds catch the dust being blown off the Sahara desert and whip it all the way into North and South America. We’ll get hazier skies and more colorful sunsets and the rains will be a bit dustier when they dry on our cars but what’s not being said is their effect on the Amazon rainforest.

The rainforest grows on a rather nutrient-poor laterite soil. Though the forest does rather rapidly recycle nutrients the rain tends to wash a lot of it out of the soil. Each year those huge Saharan dust clouds sweep across the Atlantic and fall on the Amazon basin, replacing nutrients like phosphorous that get washed out by the rain, keeping the forest lush and dense. Without the dust from the long-dead Saharan forests the Amazon forest wouldn’t be flourishing as it is.
