    The US has been easing Russia out of its space contracting for some time, the Japanese have been using their HTV-9 cargo ship to deliver beans and TP to the ISS. Last week it made its last visit, remotely docking with the ISS and coming home. It will be replaced by the HTV-X which will be launched by a totally new Mitsubishi launch vehicle. Where the HTV-9 flies up to the vehicle and is captured by the ISS’s robotic arm the HTV-X will be totally automatic, self-docking with the ISS sans ISS occupant assistance.

    I’m trying to keep thoughts of the Mitsubishi Ki-15 – better known as the WW2 kamikazi – out of my mind the thought of the Japanese building- and using for the last 11ish years – an autonomous supply vehicle launched on a totally Japanese-built ICBM…opps, I mean space launch vehicle …is of interest. The HTV-9’s launch mass is 16.5 tons and it’s launched on a H-IIB rocket (Mitsubishi again) that has a 21-ton payload. The missile can push the payload to 16,000+ MPH to an orbit and the load can be maneuvered to intercept the ISS that’s also traveling at 16,000mph+. Now I know that capability’s not too well known here, the whole ISS thing is rather ho-hum domestic stuff, but with those capabilities you can bet the Chinese have a real interest in the Japanese ‘space program’.

    Love today’s picture Stella. Good morning all. Beautiful starlit sky this morning. We meant to take the telescope out to the field and look for the space station the last few days but forgot each night or early morning.

    Last evening we had a beautiful sunset in those very colors, three stripes of them, reflecting in the totally calm lake.
