    7 hours of cooking, 1/2 of eating then 3 hours of cleanup…I’d about forgotten how much fun Thanksgiving dinner is. Then again the bones/broth for turkey & sausage gumbo is on the burner as I whine.

      It helps a little to stretch out the cooking over several days. I made the cranberry sauce and gravy yesterday. Today I’ll brine the turkey and prep all of the vegs that I can and fix the dressing for final baking tomorrow.

        I did. it’s just that we get allanal about doing things. Years ago my middle son and I cooked a seafood gumbo for the family (he’s food industry pro) and not only did everyone in the family leave the house while we were joint cooking but made us eat in the backyard.

        CZ and I just get intoit and carried away.

          My turkey is dry brining (after removing legs, wings and backbone – that was a job), and the bread is dry and ready to prepare dressing. Now on to veg cutting.

            Bon voyage, we’re done except for the gumbo. To us it actually feels like Thanksgiving is over but our GGS got his ‘GGS centered’ Turkey Day and now it’s off to his ‘extended other family’s’ Turkey Day that’s a bit….extended.

      I’ve done the pecan pie, and a pan of cornbread. Not much, but a start! Only the 2 of us this year, so we’re taking the easy route. Instead of a whole turkey, I only have 1/2 of a breast for the slow cooker. It will also have gravy when I’m done. So, I just do mashed potatoes, cornbread dressing, green bean casserole and fairy cabbages, and that’s it!

    Good morning everyone. Cooking day for so many of us. I did my heavy cleaning and errands yesterday. It’s all about the food today and tomorrow.

    Found an interesting article about a book tracing many favorites, including our well loved cornbread dressing, to slave dishes. Sounds like a very good book, if it includes the recipes. In every town down here people know at least one restaurant owned by old, and I mean very old, black men or women who cook the best food you’ve ever had. In South Carolina and around Savannah there are many Gullah dishes to be found. I like those so much that I once did a lot of reading on the Gullah culture and cooks, as well as bought a book.

    Good read.

      On a serious side there are rumors that one of the guards charged with dereliction may be getting close to cutting a deal for his testimony. I’m betting there was a delay in any processing as the jailers’ lawyers were trying to fight for better position.

      The case is too big though so I’m betting the Feds made it totally clear that their position was the guards would be in gen pop in a Federal prison, not a good place for a convicted screw to be. I’m betting the Fed’s fallback was if they came clean they’d get protective custody in a minimum security prison though if the Big Guys want to get to them protective custody is nothing.

      Quite a hole those guards have dug for themselves – they stay mum and the Feds send them to an abattoir; they spill the beans and they stay out of the gen pop meat grinder but they turn states evidence and they’re pout into a more open shooting gallery.., Either way they’re potentially done for and a likely scenario is that either way at least one, if not both, gets popped as they are both long term liabilities to the plotter.

      These people who feel that they can become associates of the high and mighty haven’t learned from the debris trail left by hi-priority modern assassinations over the last 56 years and 4 days.

      It’s coming here. The BS about cow farts, industrial chicken and hog farming, how we don’t need to eat climate-destroying meat. At the same time increased moves by the Feds to take over ALL water sources (impoundments and free flowing), controlling water distribution to farms and forcing practices like ‘organic’ weed/pest control, limitations on fertilization and no-till farming are hurting crops.

      At some point you’ll be paying meat prices for crappy vegetables and there will be very real shortages. Time for the planners to start finding ways to kill off more of the population.

          You have numerous Federal agencies fighting for water control, they know that the agency that gets control of the nation’s water is THE most powerful civilian agency in the country.

          The USDA, Department of the Interior, FEMA, Corps of Engineers, USGS, damn near everyone but the Congressional janitors office is fighting for at least a piece of the pie. Biggest thing in our favor is that they’re fighting not only each other but competing departments inside of the agencies are fighting each other so as long as that mess is going on we have a breather.

          For the last decade, at least, a bill has been introduced into Congress that would give the Feds 100% control over all free flowing water and impounded water down to swimming pools and puddles, all water everywhere in the US would come under Federal control (ownership) for ‘the public good’. So far the farming states have fought the bill off but they try each year.

          You may remember some of my BLM rants from next door in years past about my bumps with BLM over water.

          I tried one, their Impossible Whopper. Only thing I found impossible about it was the claim it was supposed to taste like beef. Tasted more like a bucket full of feed passed thru a ‘beef’.

              To me it’s a waste of money. The mouth-feel is as gritty/icky as the veggie ‘meat’ patties you can buy in the store.

                Duriing one of my vegetarian phases I was invited to one of my youngest daughters’s friends houses for one of those “meet the family” since our daughters are friends and will be spending the night at each other’s houses.

                The mom was super sweet and given my daughter had told her that I was a Veggie she made me some store bought veggie meatballs.

                Well when I go vegetarian I don’t eat fake meat I eat veggies fruits cheeses starches all sorts of good stuff.

                I choked down a couple and smiled but they were awful. Grainy and tasteless.

                The mom and I became friends and laughed about it eventually.

    Oh oh…bad sign. A 4-quart Pyrex mixing bowl my ex and I bought back in the very early 70s just broke. In the divorce she got the kids and I got the Pyrex. Over the years I got the kids back, but now the Pyrex is starting to go does that mean I shouldn’t check my front porch…???
