      Yayyyy, crispy edged pancakes. Mornin’ Nyet, everyone. 🙂 It is COLD here. I actually thought about turning the heat on when I got out of bed. I didn’t do it, but I thought about it. I went to an SPCA dinner last night. It got down to 55* and was windy. They had those heater things set up outside, but even standing under them, it was cold because the wind was blowing so hard. 😦 We went inside, but later had to get in line outside to pay for some things and I got a really deep chill. I was in bed about a half hour before I warmed up. I will not get sick. I will not get sick. I will not get sick. Dear God, don’t let me get sick.

    Czarina was talking about her high school class reunions and it reminded me of Norman, my best friend in high school in Germanyl.

    He was a tall and skinny kid, about 6′ 4″ and about 150 pounds, all joker and smiles. His dad was a colonel and they lived in the senior officer housing area in town – they had a teen rec hall and those of us who were kids in the American enlisted ‘projects’ had squat, so I spent a lot of time up there.

    One day up at the officer area Norm was goofing off and was hanging by his arms from a tall German bus stop sign. I was into 35mm photography at the time, had my Nikon camera and snapped a b&w of him, goofy face and all, hanging from that sign. I developed it, made an 8×10 and saved a copy inside of the clear cover on that year’s high school yearbook. I didn’t think about it and it stayed there.

    I was in basic training in San Antonio, his dad was assigned to a position with a defense contractor there and Norm had enlisted in the AF about a month ahead of me and was already finished with training. He found out I was there and got his dad to intercede with the AF to allow them to take me off base on my free weekend to their home. That was the last time I saw him until I met up with him in Da Nang in the fall of 1967. Norm, who’d never been good at speaking German, was apparently a whizz at Chinese, finished the DLA Chinese course in record time and was assigned to the CORDS at DaNang as a non-morse intercept translator. We had a great couple of days (he wore civvies and had an off-base pass and vehicle) and it was back to work.

    We kept in touch but never saw each other again until in 1972 I get a call…he’d come home to Dallas from college and was staying in his family’s brand new house with his mom, his dad was out of town on business. At some point during the night the A/C malfunctioned and the house burned down killing them both.

    I didn’t think much about it after that until one of my sons moved to Dallas in the 90s. I knew I was going to visit my son so I started looking for Norm’s dad, I was pretty sure I could find him as he loved Dallas and believed he’d stay there. Sure enough, I found him. I called and got his new wife, we talked and she said he was in pretty bad shape physically now and he’d never really gotten over the loss of Norm and his mother, it still weighed on him. Out of the clear blue she asked if I had any pictures of Norm as they’d all burned in the fire and except for a few polaroids of him ast family events everything was gone – then I remembered the picture in my yearbook. I got the book and had the photoshop dupe the pic in it and sent it along with my only copy of the 8×10 at the bus stop and sent them to him. A few days later she called to tell me he was elated, the goofy pic was his treasure now and he kept it by their bed until the day he died. Who knew when I took it?

    Norm was big into Chinese, he was studying in college for a career as an interpreter and was looking at a area like business to specialize in. He’d have been perfect, a 6-foot-4 joker who’d speak fluent Chinese, they’;d have loved him. I thought of that and in the late 90s had my son drop me at his grave for an hour or so. I’d stopped by our local Asian big box and picked up the usual funeral things like incense and funerary money and got a local friend to actually get me a couple of cans of Ba Muoy Ba beer. I sat by his grave, burned incense and money and had a beer with him. My son didn’t understand it but then he never went into the military. I’m going to do it again except this time it’s going to be a German beer out of a Bender’s Bier mug. That was the nasty green beer we’d drink at the gasthaus that brewed it just down the hill from his place. It took me over 30 years to find a stein from that long-closed place but I have one…and a BBK stein
    (our other hangout) too. Bucket list.

      It’s actually rather remarkable, czar, how many people who drop by this blog and CTH that have led quite extraordinary lives and have recollections worth writing down. You certainly are one of them.

      Someday when you’re gone on to the next life, I’m sure family would love to have a record of how you sounded and looked at various stages of your earthly existence. Hope you’ve started on those memoirs.

      It’s wonderful you were able to give a man whose remembrances are marred by tragedy a bit of solace and joy. It wasn’t just happenstance which caused you to look up Norm’s dad or for the dad’s new wife to ask about photos you might have. One thing sure, Dad will remember your kindness every time he walks by those photos of a cherished son, and certainly until his final day.

        I went and visited his father’s second wife a few times before she passed. Last time I was there she gave me a set of his father’s cufflinks (there’s something you don’t see much anymore) so that someone will remember both of them after she was gone.

          Looking at photos of my father’s late brother, there’s the realization that I may be the only person in the world who remembers him. He had no children, though his wife had a daughter from a previous marriage. She in turn had two daughters, but whether they are still alive, I have no idea. My nephews were very young when we visited my uncle, and thus they don’t have any recollection of specific persons they met while on holiday with my parents.

          I look at the few items of my uncle’s…his union painter’s card and pins, a few cracking photos taken of him and his job crew in the 1930s, some other unimportant documents…and feel the need to do something with them, maybe a collage in a shadow box. The thought that he will be lost, that no one will remember him fondly is somewhat disturbing.

          Recognizing that this is the way of the world…that there are billions of folk who came and went on our earth who no one remembered a couple of generations past their deaths…creates in a person the need to leave something behind, something to be remembered long after one’s parting. What that is is up to the individual’s imagination.

          May we each above everything else, however, be remembered for the love we gave, the kindness we showed, and the affection we displayed to family and friends alike…that is the most worthy legacy of all.

            Norm had no siblings and other than myself and the same girl we both chased (neith one of us won) there’s no one who really remembers him or visits his grave. Then again even if you have family there’s no guarantee anyone will remember anyone, ancestors are not a cultural thing here.

    I just made a half recipe of Spicy-Sweet Sambal Pork Noodles. Spicy, and yummy! I used egg noodles, though, because I don’t have ramen noodles in the pantry today. I also ground my own pork from lean boneless chops that I got on sale (cheaper than ground pork).

    But these reports downplay or omit the most important parts of Morrison’s testimony for Trump’s defense:

    Morrison testified “I was not concerned that anything illegal was discussed” on the July 25 phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, to which he himself listened. That statement does not appear anywhere in the Democrats’ “key excerpts” document. He also testified that he “did not have a view” on whether President Trump’s comments to Zelensky on the phone call were “improper.”
    Morrison testified that he was afraid that the conversation would leak — not because he thought the president had done anything wrong, as Democrats’ “key excerpts” document implies, but because he knew about what would happen, given “Washington’s polarized environment.” The Democrats’ summary of the document omits this telling exchange between Morrison and chairman Adam Schiff — no doubt, because it damages their case:

    THE CHAIRMAN: Okay. I just wanted to follow up a bit on this.

    One of the concerns, and there may be an overlap between the first two concerns you mentioned about the caII, and if the call became public. First, you said you wene concerned how it would play out in Washington’s polarized environment and, second, how a leak would affect bipartisan suppont for our Ukrainian partners.

    Were those concerns nelated to the fact that the President asked his Ukrainian countenpant to look into on investigate the Bidens?

    MR. MORRISON: No, not specifically.

    THE CHAIRMAN: So you didn’t think that the President of the United States asking his counterpart to conduct an investigation into a potential opponent in the 2020 election might influence bipartisan support in Congress?

    MR. MORRISON: No.

    THE CHAIRMAN: And you weren’t concerned that the President bringing up one of his political opponents in the Presidential election and asking a favor with respect to the DNC server or 2016 theory, you weren’t concerned that those things would cause people to believe that the President was asking his counterpart to conduct an investigation that might influence his reelection campaign?

    MR. MORRISON: No.

    THE CHAIRMAN: That never occurred to you?

    MR. MORRISON: No.

    THE CHAIRMAN: Did you recognize during the — as you listened to the call that if Ukraine were to conduct these investigations, that it would inure to the President’s political interests?

    MR. MORRISON: No.

    Morrison contradicted Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the Democrats’ star witness in the closed-door hearings, who reported to Morrison directly. Morrison testified that while he admired his subordinate’s patriotism, he was irritated that Vindman failed to report concerns about the call directly to him. He said Vindman never raised concerns that something illegal had happened. He also said he accepted all of Vindman’s proposed edits to the call record, contrary to Vindman’s testimony. And while he did not think that Vindman was a leaker, he testified: “I had concerns that he did not exercise appropriate judgment as to whom he would say what.” He said that Vindman’s sloppy practices were partly the result of his own predecessor at the NSC, Dr. Fiona Hill — another one of the Democrats’ star witnesses, who, like Morrison, is due to testify publicly this week.
    Morrison testified that other foreign aid being offered by the U.S. at the time was reportedly under review — not just to Ukraine. And he confirmed earlier testimony that the aid being held up did not include the essential Javelin anti-tank missiles, which were being delivered to Ukraine through a separate procurement process.
    Morrison testified that he had no concerns that President Trump asked President Zelensky, during the July 25 phone call, to meet with his personal attorney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
    Morrison kept NSC lawyers informed about what was going on — not because he was concerned Trump had done anything wrong, but because he wanted “to protect the president” from whatever Sondland was doing.

    Federal prosecutors offered a plea deal to two correctional officers responsible for guarding Jeffrey Epstein on the night of his death, but the officers have declined the offer, people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

    The existence of the plea offer signals the Justice Department is considering criminal charges in connection with the wealthy financier’s death at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York in August. The city’s medical examiner ruled Epstein’s death a suicide.

    The guards on Epstein’s unit are suspected of failing to check on him every half hour, as required, and of fabricating log entries to show they had. As part of the proposed plea deal, prosecutors wanted the guards to admit they falsified the prison records, according to the people familiar with the matter. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not permitted to publicly discuss the investigation.

    The U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan had no comment on the plea offer.

    Both guards were working overtime because of staffing shortages. They have been placed on administrative leave while the FBI and the Justice Department’s inspector general investigate the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death.

      Hopefully the FBI is doing it’s job and monitoring any large and unusual expenditures the guards may be making. That they are not cooperating seems to be an indication of their culpability, though any lawyer would tell his client NOT to say a thing. We know even innocent people get charged.

      If it weren’t for so many suspicious happenings occurring on the night of Epstein’s death, a suicide might be more plausible.
