  1. Replacement ovens due in on Thursday along with a cold front -let the annual heavy stews and bread baking BEGIN!

    1. Oh yes czar, my very favorite thing in the fall is bread and soup. Also chili, preferably with venison. Sunday my husband’s family had one of their sibling days (there are eight of them) and we had chili and soup. I’ve wanted some good chili for a month now, even though it isn’t cold yet.

I will either cook so much I’ll have to give things away to people or I will have forgotten how to cook when we finally have a house. I’ve never gone so long without cooking before. I believe I has been almost four months since I made anything myself.

The first order of business will be to get a few ferments going again, including sourdough starter. Then I’m going to indulge myself. To a limit. I will no longer have a spare refrigerator and freezer, so I’ll have to learn to be prudent.

      2. Czar can only cook for several people, so we always have leftovers. Right now in the refrigerator we have pinto beans with ham hocks, fried rice with pork, pork roast, smoked pork ribs, and polenta which we eat for lunch or future dinners. And there are other leftovers frozen, too, in case he doesn’t feel like cooking.

        1. I used to cook for a family of five. It’s been nearly 40 years since I’ve done that but old habits are hard to break. And leftovers are GREAT!

            1. Thing is, in a lot of leftovers the flavors meld over a day or two of sitting. I made yellow grits a few back and we’ve had fried grits, eggs and bacon for brunch for two days now. I’m typing this as my latest grits fry on the stove, I love them.

      3. Ahhhhh…venison chili – I’ll send you our address and an overnite label. You-Know-Who doesn’t want me harvesting her deer children thought we feed and leave mineral blocks out for them. I guess she hoped it would be like a Disney movie with prancing, dancing critters happily cavorting in the front yard (sorta like what the Democrats expected with their minions) but it’s just turned into a mob of feral consumers tearing up the environment and eating our produce (much like the Democrats discovered).

Yeah, seems my favorite kimchee company’s not producing of late, excuse is they can’t find enough organic napa cabbage to meet their needs. Thing is that the organicness of kimchee is the least of your problems, if you can survive a meal of good kimchee then the additives should just slide right by. Then there’s real made-in-Korea kimchee.

Hmmmm…you can make a great kimchee soup that is like Korean beef stew, might work with venison.

        1. I only “liked” this b/c he’s my husband. I do NOT like kimchi, as it smells like rotten food, which is obviously an acquired taste. He is very lucky I let him eat it in the house…..

          1. Company I usually buy my kimchee from puts ginger in it, that’s super. I brought a book back from Korea that has recipes for about 50 kinds of kimchee, I learned to love it when I worked/ate with the Korean army in Vietnam.

When I rotated to Korea for exercises the USFK staff would put me in the Korean SCIF vault as I could not only work with the Korean military I could eat with them We’d go to ‘lunch’ on the graveyard shift and the Korean mess would have all sorts of stuff plus eggs plus at least 3 kinds of kimchee. By the time the shift in the SCIF was over the US staff on the room’s main floor was politely asking to close the vault’s door as the green cloud in the vault was starting to drift into their spaces.

            1. I understand completely. I used to work at a lab with a few Koreans. The entire lab would complain about the smell. I just joined in and encouraged others to as well. If you get a taste for it, it’s some wonderful stuff!

I can remember walking thru part of the Mall in DC and having tree rats run across the grass, climb upon us and try to steal what ever we were eating. Even the ^&%$#@ squirrels in DC are Democrats.

      2. When I lived in Washington state I practically made pets of two squirrels and left unsalted peanuts out for them. The female would actually come into my living room when I had my patio doors open and eat from my hand. And, yes, I noticed the male squirrel had balls bigger than his head…humongous! Nature is so hilarious!

And I know the “tree rat” is a joke; however, it is also an excuse people have used to justify their cruelty toward them. I’m sure you know that though rats and squirrels are rodents, they are completely different types of mammals within that category.

  5. Good news! One of the drugs I am taking was costing me $367 a month copay. I just got off the phone with Blue Cross, and my copay has been reduced to $40 a month. Still a lot, but much better. Now I’m trying to get a refund for this month’s copay.

    1. I was just on the phone to the hospital corp. which does billing for my PCP clinic. Is is the second time in a year I have had a vaccination and then a bill for ~$150. Just like last time, the billing office stated I don’t have to pay this bill because, as the clinic staff should have explained to me, the bill is being sent to Part D to pay. I should ignore this bill, and the next one which will arrive shortly. I said how am I to know it is not to be paid by me, since it says nothing on the bill. And when I receive a second one, and don’t pay it how do I know I won’t be sent to a collection agency, thus affecting my credit rating.
The clerk was very polite and apologized for my inconvenience but said there was nothing she could do. I called the administrator of the hospital’s office then, restating my complaint, received more condolences from the secretary and a promise to send my concerns to the director of the billing dept. I asked I be called re the resolution. I imagine how many people in constrained circumstances pay these bills then (maybe) receive refunds months later.

    2. Have you looked at buying from a local pharmacy that takes GoodRx? The pharmacies have slacked off of the ‘clawback’ amounts in copays after they got caught. What you may well be seeing is more of the true reflection of the drug’s price, they used to reduce the price to the pharmacies and make their profits back by passing the difference off to the customers in their copays. Feds finally moved to end that and Big Pharma blunted the attack by lowering sharply the clawback on a lot of drugs.

I got a couple of my drugs locally using GoodRx for less than I was paying for my copay on my military health plan.

      1. If you have insurance, you can’t use both that and the GoodRx coupons; anyway, their coupon amount was the same or more than what I was paying – $367. Now I’m paying $40.

How To Make Bread Pudding with Chef Eric Crowley

My mother related a story that when my older brother was a baby (1937) and Dad was making $15 a week, you ate what you could afford. The neighborhood grocer understood this and when he knew Mom and Dad didn’t have money for bread, he would give Mom the “day old bread” gratis.

  7. Judge To Reconsider Covington Catholic Teen’s Defamation Lawsuit Against Washington Post

    https://thefederalist.com/2019/10/29/judge-to-reconsider-covington-catholic-teens-defamation-lawsuit-against-washington-post/

How formidable are Lin Wood and Todd McMurtry?

Rather than an immediate appeal of a faulty judicial decision, they petitioned the original judge, Judge Bertelsman, in the Nick Sandmann defamation lawsuit to reconsider his ruling.

    *****

Judge Bertelsman’s original opinion was ripe for reversal by Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. But Sandmann’s attorneys, Todd McMurtry and Lin Wood, opted against appealing immediately, and instead asked Judge Bertelsman to reconsider his decision. Sandmann’s lawyers also requested permission to file an amended complaint.

Yesterday, over the Washington Post’s opposition, the court granted both motions, set aside its earlier decision dismissing Sandmann’s defamation case and accepted Sandmann’s amended complaint.

In short the lawsuit is moving forward, and the legal team of Wood/McMurtry are going to file requests for discovery and the WaPo is going to bleed money.

Settlement? Too soon to know, but I would say it is a strong possibility.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.

We went in, a few minutes late, my friend knows I hate the previews, and we sat down and sat and sat and sat. Finally one of the 8 people in the theater got up and walked out. When he came back he said they had told him there was something wrong and they were trying to make (whatever they use nowdays) show the movie. Anyway, it worked out. We got our money back and a ticket for another movie. I was happy.
