There was a shooting in Slidell, just down the interstate from us. A guy and his girlfriend had a fight, she leaves and leaves their child in the house with him. A few hours later two guys, one with a gun, show up (presumably sent by tn\he girlfriend) and say they want the kid. The child’s father pulls out his gun, shoots and kills the armed’kidnapper’ and wounds the other one.

Police arrest the wounded kidnapper and charge him with murder as he was part of the illegal operation that forced the daddy to whack the armed kidnapper. BUT WAIT! The daddy is a felon (charge undisclosed) and couldn’t legally possess a gun so they’ve charged him with being a felon in possession of a firearm and arrested him.

Daddy defends child against two (one armed) thugs sent by mom to take child, dad gets arrested and mom, unless the DA decides to charge her, may get the kid.

One of you just don’t want to read the newspaper.

We’re not being told if the felony were a violent one or what. Texas has a law that basically says felons can, if their behavior has been lawful for 5 years after his/her sentence is discharged can possess a firearm in his/her home for protection. Other states have similar but varying laws and Louisiana is silent.

Thing is that Federal law still prohibits that so even if the state allows it the Feds can intervene and arrest the person under Federal law…sorta like they do marijuana…oh? Say what?

Strange that the HOA was so imprudent in their written communications. The issue should have been given to their HOA attorney. I don’t agree with the judge’s decision re the couple having to pay fees, for sure.

This couple, however, gets my back up. There are ways and then there are ways…first off, you sign up with an HOA and you have to recognize that there are rules to follow. If their homeowners contract didn’t have any rule or reg which covered religious displays, then they are within their rights to put up what they want. But are they free to have such a huge and obviously noisy party?

Slamming a full-blown display and party where non-residents who are not personal friends are invited to come into an enclave is going to be against the unwritten and perhaps written rules of such communities. Safety is a prime concern and keeping a low profile for most people is the reason they buy condos and homes in such a housing division.

If the couple was concerned about being good Christian neighbors, they would have taken a completely different tack–making friends within the community, running for HOA offices, having a small party for residents only and discussing the larger party hoping to encourage the kind of public outreach they were advocating…just for a start.

The HOA officers are, in turn, not good neighbors; but I believe they were within their rights to tell the couple that a party would not be welcome. However, the prohibition based upon religion they found offensive, is absolutely wrong and the case should proceed upon that religious rights issue alone.

Al Copeland, owner of Popeye’s, used to have a huge and elaborate display at his house on the Lakefront each Christmas. This went on for years until the neighbors complained about the crowds and he moved it to a park.

Issue here seems to be the person who is not a Christian who objects to the open display regardless of size. I’m getting sort of tired of one minority member in any majority community stopping events supported by the minority. Also tired of activist judges trying to look like heroes for the underdog by using directed verdicts to legislate from the bench.

It appears they did meet the HOA requirements and the process would have been for the HOA to change the requirements but leave the display in place as it met existing ones. Let’s say this was a black-majority community and the HOA objected to a like-sized Kwanza display because of the lit disco balls and blaring rap/hip hop music being poured out onto the street (like our old neighborhood). Let’s say the HOA – even if it dared – sent them a letter as a non-black resident objected. Think this would have gone the same way?

What’s gonna happen when majority residents start throwing ritually slaughtered goats off of rooftops for Eid-al-Adha…? Someone gonna be sending letters to the HOA?

Back when Al owned it we’d get a free 3-piecer meal when we came by in uniform – it was good and cheap security for the stores. There’d be cops/deputies that would hit 2 or more a shift, we’d say that Popeye’s killed more cops than bullets. In all, a better way to go.

Well……….yes. Sorta. I had to fast forward a little through it. Couldn’t stand the suspense. I am afraid of heights and falling in a crevasse kinda goes along with that.

And, I have been on a mountain in a storm and that was scary enough. My dad and I had gone hiking in Colorado, me in my 30’s and my dad in his 60’s. He made a couple of choices of path that even he decided later were not good choices. The thunder storm that suddenly appeared from over the mountain scared us both half to death.

Yes, and we knew that. We just didn’t know about the storm. It was sunny on our side of the mountain all the way up. Then, on the way back down, it started getting cloudy, and the clouds turned dark and we walked faster and faster back down the road. We had cross countried going up, my dad’s idea. 🙄 The lightning and thunder were pretty terrifying and I wondered when we would get hit. There were tall trees all around us.

I asked if the girls slept and she said they slept just fine all night. I asked how she was sure and she said they had the girls between them and watched the girls sleep all night because they were cold and couldn’t sleep. Evidently, they managed to keep the girls warm between them. She said it was beautiful during the day, but the night was down around 32*.

Years ago before cell phones were in use, I worked for a fella who took a two-month leave each summer for study in the UK. Tired of being inside, he had a weekend off and went hiking on the moors. It had been slightly raining, but he was prepared…proper shoes, slicker, gloves. He came to a small crevasse and decided to jump across.

Well, the inevitable happened, he slipped on the wet rocks and fell in, jammed one leg so hard that later it was found to be broken in multiple places with lacerations all up and down both legs. The pain was excruciating and he passed out.

When he came to, being completely off the beaten path and no way to call for help, the only way he could get out was to try to endure the pain while pulling his leg up and out and throwing himself on the bank. He honestly didn’t remember how he did it, but he finally got out of the crevasse and slid on his butt across the moor to a dirt/gravel road he’d seen about a 1/2 mile back.

A guy just happened to be driving a route he didn’t ordinarily take and found him passed out on the side of the road. He recovered, of course, but he never went hiking by himself again.

My wife, her sister, sister’s husband, and I went on a hike at Lake Havasu, There was some rugged terrain and at one point we had to slide down a boulder. It was at least 6 feet high and it was slide or jump. The other 3 went first and all went well. I had my hands touching the sides of the ‘gap’. I hit the ground and I heard and felt a break. I knew it was either my Achilles Tendon or a bone in my lower leg. My first step told me it was my tendon. There was a mile hike to get back to the car and I had to walk. It was either that or get a helicopter med-evac. Too expensive, so I walked.
I developed respect for hiking sticks, My brother-in-law had 2 and I used them. My wife was at one side kind of holding me up and her sister the other. On occasion, my brother-in-law was in back sometimes. One of the things that went through my mind was had I been alone, I would have had to crawl. When I started, I had to walk sideways or a lateral movement because I couldn’t take a normal step. Later I was able to take about half a normal step. We made it out.

Yes, you were lucky to have help getting back and to get into surgery so soon. I knew somebody who was a counselor at a camp. She hurt her leg and just suffered with it for several days. When she finally got to a doctor, they told her it was her achilles and it was to late to reattach it. This must have been back in the late 40’s. When I met her she walked with a severe limp because her leg had shriveled, or something. Anyway, it was bad.

The calf of my injured leg is about an inch less in circumference than my good leg. There were 5 weeks from the injury, surgery, and the time I could put weight on my injured leg. Muscles atrophied, I knew it could happen, but I never thought it would be that fast. I had to learn to walk again. Walk properly. I walk okay now, but if I am not careful I will favor that leg and limp. I had about 35 physical therapy sessions and there are many medical advances since your friend’s injury. I would rather have broken a bone.

Yes. Sometimes a broken bone is an easier thing to deal with. I injured a toe once. The doctor xrayed it and said it was the cartilage, or something. He said if it had been the bone it probably would heal in 6 weeks, but this would take 4 months or so.

On the walkout, I was thinking of survival. It was semi-desert, nothing which to build a shelter. There would be enough wood for a fire.
ALWAYS HAVE A SURVIVAL KIT WITH ANY OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES: Knife, Cord, Matches, Bandana(maybe 2 or 3), Survival Blanket, Water, Energy Bar. Jacket. That is the absolute minimum.

Seems last Sunday someone called for a welfare check on a home in Edgewater, FL, and the police found 3 children ages 8-10, 2 adults and 275 animals. 178 were mice, rats & baby mice, the rest were 4 dogs, 2 cats, 9 guinea pigs, 12 rabbits, 4 hamsters, 10 sugar gliders, 14 birds, 2 geckos, 1 tortoise, 1 hedgehog, 7 bearded dragons. How could they have not had scorpions, tarantulas, snakes, several kinds of fish, and an aligator in the tub?

    lilbirdee12’s prayer:

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

A prayer for Justice Kavanaugh and Gen. Flynn:

    Prayer to St. Michael

    St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle;
be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
    May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do you, O prince of the heavenly host,
    by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits
who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

Just had a tornado warning on the TV. It’s ok though, the warning came out just after it left our county??????????????? Now, it is cancelled. Oh, well, I didn’t even know it was raining. They said to watch for more. I wonder if they will warn us ahead of time next time? :\

I have a flip phone. I can’t use apps and I would imagine you would need to. I do have a weather alert radio, but even set at just my area it generally goes off about every 15 min all day long every day. LOL That is because the area includes areas of water.
