      I was just talking about this with a friend yesterday. He sent me an article about how the original tunnel from The Great Escape was being excavated. It had laid undisturbed for over 70 years as the Stalag was in Soviet territory and they had no interest in it. He was mentioning it in terms of how little people today knew about WWII.

      My point was that even worse virtually no one knows about the over 20,000 Allied POWs that Churchill and FDR left in Russian hands. There was a group of reasons the two left the thousands of US, British, French, Belgian and other POWs to rot and die in Russian labor camps…and we’re not even talking about the thousands upon thousands (some estimate hundreds of thousands) of ‘Western European’ civilians (French, Belgian, Spanish, etc) who – for various reasons including forced labor – were caught behind Russian lines, most of them were never returned.

      The US and Britain spent decades playing with the numbers and denying there were POWs left to the Russians while the French rail and shout about their POWs and civilians the Russians took but without US and Brit help their complaints went nowhere. Some wondered how much, along with other issues, this had to do with France withdrawing from NATO.

      The recent declassification of a trove of WWII military and State Department records and communications show that FDR, State and Eisenhower knew of the POWs being held – remember, they ALL denied this was true – and even discussed it as it happened. But then it was all for the greater good.

      Good afternoon, Nyet! Pack up some pecan tarts for my trip to the Salento peninsula in the southern part of the Italian boot…

      …a very pretty spot where pecans supposedly are grown, but I couldn’t find any…so I went to the beach instead…

      …in Otranto, a city on Puglia’s Salento peninsula, at the very tip of Italy’s heel…however, anywhere along this coast is lovely and a stop-by must…

    I am watching Shepherd Smith (by accident, I was busy and didn’t change the channel). One of their veteran reporters is on one of the islands in the Bahamas, the one that was mostly Haitians. It is dead silent. He says they don’t know how many are dead. They don’t even know how many had been living there. They don’t know who they were. There are bodies everywhere and the smell is awful. There was a church where many gathered, which is now rubble and there are arms and legs sticking out of all the rubble. So far, only helicopters can get in there. He said they are mapping the waters to see if they can get a ship in there with supplies. It appears nothing is standing. Total devastation.

    Hey guys, Stella called me and asked me to let you all know that she is in the hospital, CCU. She had a heart attack today, she felt chest pains, called 911 and they took her to the hospital where she had two stents put in. They are watching her overnight and then she expects to go in a room tomorrow.

    She has posts auto scheduled through Sunday but does not know when she can get back to running the blog.

    She sounded good and in good spirits, and her daughter is on the way to be with her. If I hear anything more I will pass it on to you guys. In the mean time please join me in prayers for her speedy and complete recovery, and we will throw her a big party when she gets back.
