Palm Beach County orders partial evacuation as Hurricane Dorian produces 200 mph gusts over Bahamas

Sun Sentinel

Palm Beach County ordered the evacuation of barrier islands and other vulnerable areas Sunday, as Hurricane Dorian produced wind speeds of 175 miles per hour and gusts to 200 mph.

The storm strengthened unexpectedly Sunday morning, producing top sustained winds of 175 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center said in an 9:30 a.m. update.

The hurricane’s predicted path moved slightly toward Florida Sunday morning, putting parts of South Florida back within the danger zone for a possible landfall.

South Florida remains at the left edge of the cone of uncertainty, indicating the likely course of the storm’s center, and the cone’s center remains well offshore and aimed at the Carolinas. But Florida remains under the threat of a direct hit, the National Hurricane Center said in a 5 a.m. Sunday update.

West Palm’s like NOLA, a disaster waiting to happen. They’ve filled in and built on areas that were natural wetlands nature used to catch rain runoff and feed the aquifer, that huge area right west of to running north and south along Military Trail used to be swamp but now it’s all drained, filled and built over and while it doesn’t cause too many issues with normal rains a big rainmaker will be…a problem.

They allowed islands to be built in the Intercoastal Waterway to feed the tax coffers and now they’re in danger of flooding – wonder if the New York lawyers with vacay homes there are sharpening their quills? Like NOLA their canals will drain into the Intercoastal and then into the Atlantic but I don’t know if they’ve installed floodgates on them to prevent the Atlantic and Intercoastal from draining into them first. I know that we had about 40-thousand there when we moved in so we still had the natural drainage but now the city’s well over 100K and has quite a bit more concrete and asphalt covering it. Let’s hope they dodged a bullet.

A friend of over 50 years lives in Fort Lauderdale, on the East Coast….

He said he’s not evacuating unless ordered, though he could easily batten down his house and head off for a holiday in Europe for a month. I just shake my head.
