      Wow, an ‘A’ model, you’re talking the very earliest models of the plane as in back in the 50s.

      I remember those early models having a big problem with hydraulic accumulators, most of our birds who were down for parts were so due to accumulator problems. At one point it was an art finding direct exchanges and ‘suitable substitutes’ for the accumulators between the various configurations made for the multiple models we worked with. They were constantly tweaking and redesigning the problem child accumulator and some worked on multiple models and some only on a particular one.

      They should be able to easily recover that bird, the 130 was made to land hot and short with heavy loads on unimproved runways. In Vietnam they’d plow in on bulldozed dirt runways that were under fire so they’d come in steep, flare out and hit at high speed, folks on the inside would definitely take a beating. You’re talking a 150,000 pound of plane and cargo hitting the ground at a good clip, those planes are strong.

      That pallet they showed the dispersion system being loaded on was a 463L modular platform system we worked on in the 60s. Our unit was one of the ones that did design work, it was a genius idea to develop a standard pallet system that would allow loads pallets to be transported on standard equipment from inception to final delivery.

      The pallets (3 standard sizes) would be built at the packing point, rolled onto trucks by roller ramps or forklifts, the trucks had a standard width with roller systems for ease of movement and the roller systems on the trucks matched the dual rail roller system on the C-130’s floor. You could back that many thousands of pounds pallet right to the ramp of the 130 and a couple of guys could roll it right into the plane and lock it down, it reduced load/unload time remarkably.

      At the delivery point a truck would back up to the system and the load would be pushed off, indispensable for supply under fire. In places like Khe Sahn the rear ramp would be down, and the loads unchained from the aircraft floor then pushed out as the plane turned for an immediate takeoff. If the situation allowed you could LAPSE (Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System) the load off of the aircraft. On approach the load would be unchained from the floor, it would be loose on the rails. There was a cargo parachute system attached to the load and on approach the ‘reefed’ chute would be deployed. The chute cand lines were wrapped in parachute cord and on signal a line cutter would break the parachute cord, the chute would deploy and, basically, the plane would move out from under the load:

      This is the same process but from a higher altitude. It’s a more updated extraction system than we used but it’s basically the same:
