        That looks wonderful. My son and DIL took us to Santa Rosa Beach, which was just insanely covered up with tourists, beautiful though it was. I liked St. George Island where we went several years ago much better.

        My favorite place is Tybee Island and Savannah because you have so many neat things close, even Charleston only a couple hours away, but I will readily admit that the Gulf beaches are way more beautiful.

        I love the ocean. Let me win a lottery and I am spending lots of time on some shore.

              Most of Michigan is pretty. The lakes are gorgeous, and there are a lot of them, other than the ‘Great’ ones. The southern part of the state is pretty flat.

            Someday I would love to visit the Great Lakes, and there are so many places in Michigan I would love to see. I think when most southerners think of Michigan they just automatically thing “Detroit” as far as what they visualize.

            Years ago I read a book and the characters were going to Michigan as settlers. It was a wild new land that they were leaving, I believe Nantucket, for. That vision was a starting place and a few other books have actually given me more of an idea of beautiful lakes, forrests, and some wonderful farm and orchard land.

            My kind of place, minus the snow. Which I wouldn’t mind visiting in winter for a bit. I found Alaska in the winter to be haunting and lovely. I’ll always be glad that I saw it then.

              When my GG Grandfather moved to Michigan from Vermont via Canada (lived there for about 10 years), it was October of 1835. He started with 40 acres, then acquired more acreage later. He was living in Lapeer County, which is north of Pontiac, MI. There is a description in his son’s biography:

              This was at that time a wilderness, inhabited only by wold beasts and Indians. The nearest commercial point at that time was Pontiac, a small village of two or three stores and a grist-mill, to which they made a weary pilgrimage at long intervals for their grists and scanty groceries.

              The pilgrimage would have been more than 35 miles, a considerable distance considering it was wild country.

                When I was a kid I dreamed of living in the far north. I lived on Field & Stream stories of outdoorsmen wearing knee-high lace-up boots, jodhpur pants and Mackinaw jackets slogging through snowy woods hunting the wily antler-wearing or toothed something. Then reality set in…

              Michigan was almost all woods at that time. It was heavily logged, and much of the lumber was sent to the plains for building houses, stores etc. during the expansion in the western USA.

                I got to see a soddy in Nebraska. Actually, it was a really cool house, as far as building with what they had available, and also, much cooler than the hot Nebraska summer weather outside. It was neat to get to see that. I’ve also seen pictures of families in front of those houses with animals up on the roof.

                We still have thousands of acres of woods, about 60 of them ours. Living with trees is more personally satisfying, to me, than people. We have people but they’re not visible, audible or within 1/4 of mile. Four-footed neighbors don’t park in your spaces, don’t play their stereos too loud, don’t hold raucous parties until dawn and don’t whine (I used a nicer word) about your grass if you don’t cut it fingernail close. They don’t sell drugs openly on their front lawn either…a whole nuther story. They get into our trash sometimes but that’s easily remedied.

          Oskaloosa Island is really nice. No big crowds, and the prettiest clean white sand. We also saw a lot of dolphins showing off their tricks!
          It’s close to a lot of fun things to do and really good food. We watched when the fishing boats came in and the cleaning of the fish was a sight to see!
          They also have a big sand dune called “Crab Island”. It’s just music, and a bar in the water. PARTY!

            Sounds like a lot of fun. I’ll have to remember the place. Where we stayed had some of the prettiest beaches I have ever seen, but I just hate the crowds so much. I am not a great people person, especially when there are thousands of them, and my husband thinks ten cars on the interstate is a traffic jam. 🙄

            We used to get to go to Tybee in November or February, and I love that because while I love spending time on the beach, I don’t necessarily go to swim, more to relax and take long walks. And we used to love taking binocs and watching big ships come in early in the morning. Then we would go down to River Street in Savannah for lunch and watch the tugs bring them in. My husband builds tow boats, so he especially liked that part.

            Anyhow, off season is so much more enjoyable to me, although we were at St. George’s in July a few years ago and it wasn’t bad at all, but that’s because it is almost completely residential, no condos and hotels, only an old, old hotel and housing communities mostly. My DIL likes people and places to enjoy but the rest of us are hermits and like the relaxation.

          I met my DH in Savannah. Actually met him on his ship, HMS Euraylis. My ship came in! The tales I’ve heard about this ship!

        JTR, live streams have become so popular recently. I watch a number of them.

        This is particularly lovely…a peaceful ocean view has the ability to bring out all kinds of emotions and memories. It’s such a joy to spend a quiet day with the noise of the sea.

    Hi everybody! Experimenting with my Insta Pot, and made lactose-free yogurt yesterday. I had a half gallon of lactose free whole milk and used packaged yogurt starter. After it was finished (took several hours), I strained it for a few hours in the refrigerator, and got about 36 ounces of Greek-style plain yogurt (about half the volume of the milk.)

    I’m eating it now, and it tastes really good. Since the yogurt starter has a little bit of non-fat dry milk, I’ll soon know if that tiny amount will affect my digestion. Otherwise, the experiment is a success.

    Conflating Mr Bush and Mr Trump? You’re joking, right? Mr Bush was (and is) a gold standard Republican, country clubbish Chamber of Commercism and all;

    Mr Trump is RINO to the right; literally, an anti-Democrat of considerable accomplishment with none of the Republican High-Brow Loserism(tm).

    Good editorial by Victor Davis Hanson (but his always are). A few excerpts:

    When Normality Became Abnormal

    Everyone knew the Iran deal was a way for the mullahs to buy time and hoard their oil profits, to purchase or steal nuclear technology, to feign moderation, and to trade some hostages for millions in terrorist-seeding cash, and then in a few years spring an announcement that it had the bomb.

    No one wished to say that. Trump did. He canceled the flawed deal without a second thought…

    Everyone realized the Paris Climate Accord was a way for elites to virtue signal their green bona fides while making no adjustments in their global managerial lifestyles—at best…

    Not now. Trump withdrew from the agreement, met or exceeded the carbon emissions reductions of the deal anyway, and has never looked back at the flawed convention…

    Rich NATO allies either could not or would not pay their promised defense commitments to the alliance. To embarrass them into doing so was seen as heretical. No more.

    Trump jawboned and ranted about the asymmetries. And more nations are increasing rather than decreasing their defense budgets…

    China was fated to rule the world. Period. Whining about its systematic commercial cheating was supposedly merely delaying the inevitable or would have bad repercussions later on…

    Trump then destroyed the mirage of China as a Westernizing aspirant to the family of nations. In a protracted tariff struggle, there are lots of countries in Asia that could produce cheap goods as readily as China, but far fewer countries like the United States that have money to be siphoned off in mercantilist trade deals, or the technology to steal, or the preferred homes and universities in which to invest…

    The Palestinians were canonized as permanent refugees. The U.S. embassy could never safely move to the Israeli capital in Jerusalem. The Golan Heights were Syrian. Only a two-state solution requiring Israel to give back all the strategic border land it inherited when its defeated enemies sought to destroy it in five prior losing wars would bring peace. Not now…

    At best, a middle-aged deplorable was supposed to learn to code or relocate to the Texas fracking fields. Perhaps not now.

    In the last 30 months, the question of the Rust Belt has been reframed to why, with a great workforce, cheap energy, good administrative talent, and a business-friendly administration, cannot the United States make more of what it needs?…

    Economists claimed Saudi Arabia or Russia would one day control the world by opening and closing their oil spigots. Not now.

    Three million more barrels of American oil are being produced per day just since Trump took office. New pipelines will ensure that the United States is not just the world’s greatest producer of natural gas but perhaps its largest exporter as well.

    Trump blew up those prognostications and replaced them with an optimistic agenda that the working- and middle classes deserve affordable energy, that the United States could produce fossil fuels more cleanly, wisely, and efficiently than the Middle East, and that ensuring increased energy could revive places in the United States that were supposedly fossilized and irrelevant. Normal is utilizing to the fullest extent a resource that can discourage military adventurism in the Middle East, provide jobs to the unemployed, and reduce the cost of living for the middle class; abnormal is listening to the progressive elite for whom spiking gasoline and power bills were a very minor nuisance…

    Republicans for the last 40 years joined progressives in ensuring that illegal immigration was mostly not measured, meritocratic, diverse, or lawful, but instead a means to serve a number of political agendas.

    Most Americans demurred, but kept silent given the barrage of “racist,” “xenophobe,” and “nativist” cries that met any measured objection. Not so much now. Few any longer claim that the southern border is not being overrun, much less that allowing a non-diverse million illegal aliens in six months to flood into the United States without audit is proof that “diversity is our strength.”…

      I’ll take time to read that. Sounds good. My hope is that Americians won’t be able to resist what I consisder to be our time’s own manifest destiny, to steal from history, now that President Trump has shown them what can and should be. I pray they will never go back and settle for crumbs when he tossed out the whole danged tray of enchildas.

      Society likes to tell us one man can’t make a difference because deep inside they fear one strong and valiant and visionary man more than any other thing. IMO mankind’s biggest advances and most courageous leaps have almost always starting with the timely courage and leadership of one man.

      Much of the American public has fed on a steady diet of self-denial for a long time post Cold War and reality is painful. The Democrats know that if they stoke that uncomfortable feeling, telling them it’s’ all right, everything’s gonna be OK, just drink the Kool Aid’ they’ll get a positive response from those unable to handle the truth.

    Lord whatta mess. I was down in Slidell today on a doctor’s visit and they got hit with 2″+ of rain in about 2 hours. One of the major 6-lane roads was flooded with about a foot of water – drains didn’t work – and we were down to less than 10 MPH rowing through the mess.

    When we’d stop at traffic lights I had the water at doorsill height, I could hear the waves lapping at the underside and side panels. I made it there and back but on the way back there were, strangely, four cars flooded/stalled within two blocks, all in the left or higher lane.

    So much for politicians being responsible to their electorate, none of the people outside of tow truck drivers and car repair folks are against good drainage yet main thoroughfares flood badly with just 2″ of rain.

    Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

    Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
