President Trump’s 4th of July Parade in Washington DC

We’ve all see reports of the gnashing of teeth by lefties because President Trump is parading and displaying military gear in the 4th of July parade. I wonder if they know that JFK had a full complement of planes, missiles and, yes, tanks in his inaugural parade?

I was astonished to find an article in the Washington Post, which lists the many times that tanks have figured in parades in Washington DC. Keep in mind that the tanks tomorrow will be stationary, on display on the mall, and not rolling down Pennsylvania Avenue. There are two tanks – two M1A2 Abrams tanks – moved onto the mall by flatbed trucks.

There will be flyovers by military planes, but is that any different than other shows by the Blue Angels, for example, in many places every year throughout the country? Chicago has an annual event called the Air & Water Show that has taken place every year since 1959, featuring the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds in alternating years.

Washington Post

For decades after World War I, Army Day was observed every year with military parades in Washington and New York, including displays of the latest in tank technology.

In 1949, Army Day was abolished and became part of Armed Forces Day, which is observed on the third Saturday of May. Nowadays it’s a smaller affair, including picnics on military bases and military-family discounts.

Several presidents have elected to include tanks in their inaugural parades, among them Roosevelt in 1941, Dwight D. Eisenhower in both 1953 and 1957, and John F. Kennedy in 1961.

The parade celebrating U.S. military victory in Iraq was perhaps premature, considering every commander in chief in the last 28 years has overseen some kind of military action there.

Still, on June 8, 1991, 8,800 veterans of the Persian Gulf War paraded down Constitution Avenue, with a crowd of 200,000 lining the way.

The uproar is ONLY because it is President Trump. They are apoplectic that he is going to speak. LOL

Interests me as the press, who’s been avoiding the ‘screw the troops’ line they so dearly adopted during Vietnam and have been hiding in a desk drawer since 9/11, gets to let that hatred of corrosive masculinity out for a breath.

The press has smelled the public’s support of the military and, despite a few attempts to turn the public back into a military-hating mob, pretty well cooled it. Now they get to throw some mud at the military indirectly by blasting ‘military equipment on the Mall’. Watch ’em continue the to whine on about ‘military equipment’ when what they really mean is ‘let’s all get together and dump on the military!’.

You talk about military equipment on the Mall? How about my ‘lost summer of ’68’ when among other things, I got to see some 20,000 National Guardpersons deployed in DC to protect the city from the those of po’ folks massed in the Mall in Resurrection City and then to help clean up with dozers and dump trucks the mountains of garbage left behind when the po’ folk went home.
