    Good morning everybody!

    Here’s another case of unintended consequences. Nobody knows what sunscreen chemicals may be doing in the body – even the brain.

    Sunscreen Chemicals Soak All the Way Into Your Bloodstream

    “Everyone had always thought that because these are intended to work on the surface of the skin that they wouldn’t be absorbed, but they are,” says Theresa Michele, director of the FDA’s division of nonprescription drug products, and coauthor on the FDA-funded study. Her team found that it took only a few hours after the application of sunscreen for the photoprotective chemicals to infiltrate the bloodstream and shoot up to concentrations above the FDA’s toxicology threshold that triggers further safety testing.

    The researchers saw the same patterns in all 24 of the volunteers they recruited—12 men and 12 women, who were randomly assigned to apply one of four commercially available sunscreens: two sprays, a lotion, and a cream. The participants applied their potions according to recommended labeling; four times a day for four days to 75 percent of their bodies, roughly the amount of skin you’d be showing in a bathing suit. For those four days, and three days after, the researchers collected blood every few hours to be analyzed for the presence of avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule, 30 samples in all. They discovered that while it took only a few hours for the UV-blocking chemicals to spike over the target, for three of the four formulations, those levels remained elevated through the end of the study—three days after participants had ceased spraying and smearing. Only the cream users saw their chemical concentrations tail off sooner…

    To understand what, if any, effects such chemicals have on internal tissues will take more research. Particularly urgent is learning more about long-term exposure and how absorption rates differ in infants and children, with their smaller ratio of body surface to overall size. Then there’s the importance of real-world data; for example, assessing sunscreen’s effects on a hot, sandy beach, instead of in a clinical lab’s temperature- and humidity-controlled confines. Yet the trial’s results underscore the need for more data on sunscreen absorption, as the FDA has long demanded from manufacturers, without success…

      “Only the cream users saw their chemical concentrations tail off sooner…”

      For years I’ve used Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sunscreen with active ingredients: Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 10%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 2.8%, Oxybenzone 6%. The bottle wording indicates it is “fast absorbing” and “#1 Dermatologist Recommended Suncare.” Though I’m not a sun worshiper, during my working years I often walked to and from the office; and my doctor said to use something lightweight as a sunscreen.

      Does using a product that absorbs into the skin also automatically mean that it will get into your bloodstream? Not according to my research on other products I have to use. But it is definitely possible and thus it’s recommended that blood tests be done periodically. I can’t go around worrying about it, though.

        P.S.: “…as the FDA has long demanded from manufacturers, without success….”

        So does the FDA penalize or fine those companies which ignore such demands? If not, why not?

      Miah points out that gardening, for them, is primarily a worship thing, and food is secondary. Reminds me of my mother: “She brushed the dirt off the vegetables in the garden and bit into them, telling me to taste their goodness. She sees beauty and magic everywhere. I believe she sees God all the time, in all the good and lovely things of the earth.” Her name was Jess too.

    It’s a beautiful afternoon. About 60 degrees, breezy and partly cloudy. I was just outside with Tucker. The lilacs are starting to open, and the neighbor’s crab apple is almost blooming. Picked up some sticks from my big tree which always loses a bunch of dead wood when it’s windy, and assessed some weeding that needs to be done (but didn’t do that part).

    The three heirloom tomatoes that I moved outside really early are doing great! They are growing steadily but slowly, have really sturdy stems and beautiful green foliage. The two that I kept in the house are leggy and lighter green. I moved them outside to the front porch a couple of days ago, and they will join their siblings in the back yard soon. These are all semi-indeterminate (whatever that means) and are supposed to have orange flesh. Origins are in Belarus. All of them are still in 6″ pots.

    The small hybrid cherry tomatoes and the Amish Paste tomatoes aren’t doing so well, but better than they were for a while, so I’ll give them some love and hope for the best. Probably started them too early! In the meantime, I’ve started some additional dwarf tomatoes for pots, which should be ready to go out by the end of the month. Also started the gherkin plants from seed; they are still babies, but look good. Some flowers too – Cosmos, Nasturtiums and Sunflowers. Nasturtiums are fun. If you’ve never grown them, they are edible, brightly colored and have circular bright green leaves. All parts of the plants are good to eat, and the flowers look pretty in a summer salad. Some of them have variegated leaves too:

    Rain tonight and tomorrow, but much warmer tomorrow – in the 70’s! Won’t last though.

    Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

    Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

    Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

    Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
    Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

    We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
    Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

    In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

    St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle;
    be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
    May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
    and do you, O prince of the heavenly host,

    who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.
