On April 20, 1980, the Castro regime announces that all Cubans wishing to emigrate to the U.S. are free to board boats at the port of Mariel west of Havana, launching the Mariel Boatlift. The first of 125,000 Cuban refugees from Mariel reached Florida the next day.
The boatlift was precipitated by housing and job shortages caused by the ailing Cuban economy, leading to simmering internal tensions on the island. On April 1, Hector Sanyustiz and four others drove a bus through a fence at the Peruvian embassy and were granted political asylum. Cuban guards on the street opened fire. One guard was killed in the crossfire.
The Cuban government demanded the five be returned for trial in the dead guard’s death. But when the Peruvian government refused, Castro withdrew his guards from the embassy on Good Friday, April 4. By Easter Sunday, April 6, some 10,000 Cubans crowded into the lushly landscaped gardens at the embassy requesting asylum. Other embassies, including those of Spain and Costa Rica, agreed to take a small number of people. But suddenly, two weeks later, Castro proclaimed that the port of Mariel would be opened to anyone wishing to leave, as long as they had someone to pick them up. Cuban exiles in the United States rushed to hire boats in Miami and Key West and rescue their relatives.
In all, 125,000 Cubans fled to U.S. shores in about 1,700 boats, creating large waves of people that overwhelmed the U.S. Coast guard. Cuban guards had packed boat after boat, without considering safety, making some of the overcrowded boats barely seaworthy. Twenty-seven migrants died, including 14 on an overloaded boat that capsized on May 17.
Have a peaceful Saturday…

But Flying Saucers were my favorite.

Oh yeah, all of it leading up to my current blood sugar issues.
How ’bout them candy dots on paper taper? Turkish Taffy? Atomic fireballs? Rootbeer bears? I used to get the little wax bottles with the sweet whatever inside but only when the big wax tubes full of the sweet stuff weren’t available. Cigarette (and cigar) bubblegum or just the candy cigarettes. Candy necklaces. Honey bites. Fruit slices in various flavors. Hot Tamales.
We had an actual candy store in my hometown, a old, white board sided store that had ceiling fans and shelves full of candies. There were mostly bulk candies in bins and glass jars. The candy dots were on large rolls that rolled off of a spool, you’d buy them by the foot. Licorice was hanging off of large pegs and you’d buy the stuff by the foot if you didn’t want packaged. Huge bins of bulk, unpackaged candies of various sorts, the more common ones out in the open with the more expensive stuff inside of glass counters. And always free samples to whet the buyer’s appetite.
Oh lord, just remembered…the strings of rock candy and salt water taffy made on-site. Too many memories, gotta go take some metformin.

We have a candy store here that still sells all of that stuff! Along with Zots, Razzles, those old fashioned candy sticks, Slowpokes, Charleston Chews, etc. Of course much of what was once a nickel is now over a dollar so 🙄.
The store’s main attraction is its own in house made chocolate treats 🙂 . I stay away since I discovered chocolate covered bacon. I was really hoping it would be awful.

I loved number one, like all little kids. For someone who has been clumsy most of her life, I was really good at jump rope, including double dutch. Met my husband at the drive in theater where we both worked, although we also went to high school together. He never noticed me there, and I wasn’t in his classes. But oh, I noticed him…and sometimes when I least expect it I look at him and my heart still flops a time or two. 43 years in June since we married.
And finally, yesterday it was shorts and sleeveless tee weather. Today the jackets came back out. 😀 If you don’t like the weather down here just wait a day or two.

Not to minimize the Mariel Boatlift and the honest refugees who came, lost to history is the darker side.
Castro decided to make lemonada and empty out some prisons, not political prisons, and – to use a non-PC term – some nuthouses. Lower end estimates are that only about 2700 were professional criminals but there were more in that lift who became criminals so the numbers game was an attempt to play down the criminal aspects of the boatlift. Prisons throughout the US were still holding Merielitos well into the 90s and Merielito gangs involved in gun running, narcotics, contract murder, prostitution, the whole gamut of crime, still exist in major I-95 corridor cities and even in LA.
I remember the call going out to Army Reserve centers all over the US to cough up cots, tentage, blankets and other items necessary to create and maintain the refugee camps that were to hold some 125,000 refugees who hit the US shores almost en masse, the bulk arrived in just a couple of days time and had to be fed, medically screened, housed, documented…all of the things you need to do with a refugee fresh off the boat.
The city of Miami was overwhelmed, its population increased about 10% overnight and few of the new refugees spoke English. The governor did an emergency call-up of the National Guard, the
President called up selected units from the Army Reserve, active Army and Navy to rush there and give support, especially units and individuals that had a Spanish language and wartime refugee processing capability. Were it not for the call-up the situation in Miami would have devolved into the huge disaster that Castro hoped it would when he planned the boatlift.
Thousands upon thousands of the refugees were efficiently (or as efficiently as the sudden receipt of >125,000 mostly non-English speaking would allow) transported to Army facility (especially empty barracks heavy Reserve bases) for housing while they were processed and their futures worked out. Thousands went to hospitals for treatment and screening though Guard/Reserve/Active Duty military medical personnel were heavily involved there too. Had the Active and Reserve personnel not been involved the boatlift would have been a huge disaster.
You’ll probably hear more from Czarina on this, she’d just moved from her home, Miami, to Utah where Harmonia (or Eris, take you pick) had planned we’d meet and she was going back and forth so she has her own take on this.

It was an ‘interesting’ time. To paraphrase what somebody else said earlier on FB, I am reminded of the time when, according to the story, there were only four people on earth, and one of them turned out to be a murderer. Not much has changed, humans being what they are.
LikeLiked by 5 people
We mostly had different views of the boatlift depending upon if/how it effected us. L know to this day a friend of mine who was a detective on the Miami PD has a personal and far different view of the boatlift as he spent years wallowing in its darker wake.
As for me I can remember my unit being stripped of stuff, it effected our operations for two years after that, it took that long for the stuff to be replaced. We’re almost 40 years down the road now, a standard historical narrative has been forged and it is what it is.

I was thinking about saying something similar.
Did we ask for Cuba to send all of their yearning-to-breathe-free, as well as yearning to commit crimes, and drain the US social system of more money by being crazy or otherwise able to work?
We should have shipped them right back. We’re not the world’s garbage dump, all liberal fantasies to the contrary.
Yes, I’m sure some of those who came legitimately had reasons to want to leave Cuba, just like everyone who’s everyone who’s ever lived under socialism. But again, America is not the world’s dump.
I’m getting a little sore about all the people who seem to think we are.

That was Castro’s middle finger to the US and his chance to get rid of what he considered his rabble element. That huge wave came over in just a few months, thousands of boats, the swarm was far too big for us to stop and it was just before the ’80 election so politics here played a big part. Castro was no fool.

I’m halfway through the Mueller report. It is a total bore. Ignore all media and Democrat flap. All B.S. All this report does is show definitively how utterly NOTHING it all was, from the start. It therefore by its terms proves the truly criminal malice of the sting operation perpetrated on Trump, to misuse government power and resources against a sitting President. Utterly unAmerican. Clearly part of the long term plot to subvert and bring down America, and capitalism, by its enemies. So many of whom we so kindly tolerate, as a natural infestation within our diverse culture, that we simply manage in hopes of eventual full eradication by gentle persuasion.

All I can say is my hat is off to those like Lynn who are willing to slog through the muck.
Here is my analysis after reading several excerpts.
“Orange man bad.”
I can’t get through Scott Adam’s periscopes anymore but he has an insider perspective on President Trump allegedly asking people to do questionable things. It happens all the time, innocently, with rich people. You tell your attorney to do “A” your attorney says, “You moron doing “A” is illegal”, you say “Oh, I didn’t know, Ok, let’s move on.”
Nothing, absolutely nothing unlawful about any of the utterances in the Mueller report.
Also the little bit I read there are a whole lot of qualifiers used for a legal document, “claimed” “alleged” .
I spit in the general direction of Mueller and his team of ghouls.
All the Beasts Horses and all The Beasts men have failed.
There will be hell to pay for those who kicked the tiger in the ass. Good.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
