Thought I’d drop it nextdoor and see what happens but our old line allies are getting nervous about goings on in DC.
Japan’s smack into its largest military buildup since WW II and I’m still waiting for it to announce it’s going nuke. Last figures I saw was that it could have a working bomb up and on an accurate delivery system within 6 months.
Japa just might not openly say it’s nuke capable, just like Israel, so that it keeps China off balance. Saying openly it has nukes could provoke China and inflame world opinion so by just staying inscrutable is Japan’s best option.
Japan can do it, it has an active space program that’s launched a number of satellites into orbit, even multiple satellites at one time and that’s a classic dual-use technology. She has the supercomputers needed to effectively test bomb designs and the technology to build the, though most important is she has a stockpile of easily converted fissionable materials. I’m left wondering if Japan might already have a few in stock.

Late night IDITAROD update. Pete Kaiser still holds the lead!! This is so awesome, and I’m so happy for him. He is staying about 10 miles ahead of Joar Ulsom, who is 8 miles ahead of Jessie Royer. The closest pack behind them is 25 miles back, so–baring catastrophe–not a threat to the front three. Aliy is the leader of that pack. She and Jessie Holmes are battling it out for 4th place. And Mitch Seavey is not far behind them, though he apparently had some problem on the trail between Shaktoolik and Koyuk, so he may be staying there longer than Aliy and Jessie.
Pete should make it to White Mountain about 10 tomorrow morning. All teams must rest there for 8 hours before going the final 77 mile trail to Nome. His dogs have looked great in all the videos I’ve seen, and I’m hoping for a clean run for him from here on. Go Pete!

Thanks Tundra, I have been reading your Iditarod posts and I can’t remember the mushers name but the guy whose team just decided to quit running must be disappointed.
Go Aliy!!

Yes. Nic Petit. I’m sure he is crushingly disappointed. Last year he gave up the lead at the same point in the race when he went off on a wrong trail and lost 2 hours. This year he gave up the lead by not reading his dog team correctly and driving them way too hard. Long runs, skipping rests. He is known to be a seat-of-your-pants type of musher. Doesn’t plan out his race ahead of time, makes all decisions on the fly. That can work ok in the beginning of a long race, but once extreme sleep deprivation and exhaustion set in, good decision-making is gone. Most mushers plan every bit of their race and have written instructions to themselves because by the end they’re on autopilot. I hope Nic learns from this giant mistake and comes back to try again next year.

Mornin’ everyone. The time change got me. I couldn’t get to sleep last night until about 3:00 and then woke up at 8:30. I am so sleepy, though, I can’t seem to get going. That is unusual for me. Hope this doesn’t go on too long. I hate waking up sleepy.

Late yesterday I posted a little blurb on there on how Pelosi and Schiff are backing down on their ‘Impeach Trump’ plan, almost the same as I’d posted here. Someone answered me that they’re doing that as a New York Federal attorney has announced that he’s going to impeach Trump so they’ll just let him do it.
I asked how that would work out as impeachment of a sitting president is the sole responsibility of Congress. The Fed Atty might indict him but can’t impeach him. So far no answer.

Good Morning friends and race fans! We are really getting down to it now. Pete continues to hold the lead this morning, arriving in White Mountain at 8:05. Joar is 41 minutes behind him, and Jessie is about 20 miles away. Aliy is in 4th position and resting at Elim. She has about a 20 mile lead over the team behind her, so is fairly safe in 4th, all else being equal.
The big contest now is between Pete and Joar for the championship. For the most part, the order of arrival into White Mountain predicts with about 90% certainty the order of arrival into Nome. It is 77 miles between the two and usually takes 9-10 hours to cover the distance. The weather right now is “snowin’ and blowin'”, as they say on the Bering Sea coast. That means trail drifting in, which can be brutal for the lead team. Breaking trail in drifting conditions is very hard work, and demands a strong lead dog.
The video of Pete’s arrival into White Mountain is encouraging; his dogs look great! Tails are wagging and they are sniffing at the food bags with interest. They don’t lie down immediately on stopping and some are even pounding the harness to keep moving. They must take an 8 hour rest here, so will be fresh and ready for the last run when they are able to leave at 4:05 this afternoon. Most teams are averaging a speed between 5 and 7 mph. Pete said if he could get on some hard-packed trail he thought his team could kick it up to 9-10 mph. That’s an amazing speed at this point in the race. His team is strong; the big factor now is weather. Pete has a comfortable lead, but not an insurmountable one. The race should be won in the wee hours of tomorrow morning. I’m guessing around 2 am.
One thing I was sorry to see this morning was the Scratch roster. Eight teams have now scratched, and the most recent one was Nic Petit. After running a pretty brilliant race up until reaching the coast, he appeared to seriously misread his team and pushed them to the point of rebellion. In mushing terms, he “blew up the team”, and they quit on him. That’s two years in a row that he dominated the first 700 miles of Iditarod and then lost the race by making different but severe mistakes. I hope he has learned from them and will be back next year.
Good write up from Sebastian here, with photos:

OK, it’s Utah time again:
The teacher is apologizing for the incident – and her apology on the news is strictly and unapologetically a prepared statement by the district and is in stark contrast with previous statements regarding what happened.
You’ve all heard about ours and our kids’ problems with religiouis persecution when we lived in a small Salt Lake City, almost 100% LDS, bedroom community and this incident stinks of it. Even almost 50 years later it’s still a living thing in LDS Land.
To believe the (most likely) LDS teacher that she has no idea what the Ash Wednesday cross means is beyond belief. 50 years ago the local SLC TV stations delighted in stories on the Rome-controlled pagan church forcing a paynim show of obsequience by a temporary branding. To believe that those stories aren’t still being televised or that the faithful aren’t still being taught about the heretical practices of the Papal Lamanites in the various church-related meetings. ISIS-lite.

I know I don’t live in Utah, so my experience would be different. I can’t remember how old I was when I first heard about this practice of ashes on the forehead, maybe 40’s, maybe 50’s. I don’t know if I even knew anybody who was a Catholic when I was growing up. If I did, it wasn’t something that we discussed at all. Most of what I know about Catholicism I learned here.

We have more Christian sects that do the ashes than just Catholic here, we even have Methodist and Catholic drive-thru ash services.

Hi folks I just want to say thank you for all your beautiful thoughts and prayers, they have helped to sustain us during this incredibly sad time.
I will miss my dad until we meet again. I will miss his smile, his eye roll, his laughter, his hugs, his honor, his love of family, but most of all I will miss his words.
I have been looking at loads of picture of him and I have a favorite.
I was trying to put my finger on why I loved the picture so much, and it is really very simple, my dad looks like he is ready to say something, that is and will be my enduring memory of my dad. He always had something to say.
I love you dad, but you know that, I wish we could talk about your final journey, I’m certain your critique would be both fascinating, funny and withering. Thank you that even though you loved to talk, you taught me that talking without communicating is a gong in the desert, you taught me not only to speak but also to learn, listen and observe before I spoke.

About time for me to stay the (beep) away from next door. The (beep) seem to be forming again, slithering thru the underbrush where the thorns somehow impede their abilities to read and interpret.
I posted on the Hollywood scandal just about the same as I did here and have received three replies blasting me for saying Trump was responsible for/involved in the mess. Maybe I should temper my prose so that the (beep…beep…beep) can understand without a lot of thought.
It’s almost as if there’s a cadre of Trumpers who comb the posts looking for anything they consider blasphemy and rushing to his defense whether he needs it or it’s justified…close to why I left prior to the elections when posting there was like snowshoeing through a minefield.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

Seen on FB:
Ray and Bob, two government maintenance guys, were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up. A woman walked by and asked what they were doing. “We’re supposed to find the height of the flagpole,” said Bob, “But we don’t have a ladder.”
The woman said, “Hand me that wrench out of your toolbox.”
She loosened a few bolts and then laid the pole down.
She then took a tape measure from their toolbox, took a measurement and announced, “Eighteen feet six inches,” and walked away.
Ray shook his head and laughed, “Well ain’t that just like a ‘Miss-know-it-all’ woman?” “We need the height and she gives us the length.”
Ray and Bob still work for the government.
But now they’re Congressmen.

IDITAROD UPDATE. Yowza, I’m on the edge of my seat. Pete left White Mountain on schedule and is now 60 miles from the burled arch in Nome. Joar left 42 minutes later and is now 5 miles behind Pete. They have the same number of dogs and are traveling at roughly the same speed. Go Pete! Stay focused and make no mistakes.

Meanwhile, Aliy is 7 miles out from White Mountain and her 8 hour rest. She has a comfortable hold on 4th place, the next team behind her is 15 miles back.
Our rookie, Jessica Klejka has reached Unalakleet in 31st position–not bad for a rookie! Article here has a nice photo of her:
