Early Radio

Wikipedia:

The discovery of these “Hertzian waves” (radio waves) prompted many experiments by physicists. An August 1894 lecture by the British physicist Oliver Lodge, where he transmitted and received “Hertzian waves” at distances up to 50 meters, was followed up the same year with experiments by Indian physicist Jagadish Chandra Bose in extremely high frequency radio microwave optics and a year later with the construction of a radio based lightning detector by Russian physicist Alexander Stepanovich Popov.

Starting in late 1894, Guglielmo Marconi began pursuing the idea of building a wireless telegraphy system based on Hertzian waves (radio). Marconi gained a patent on the system in 1896 and developed it into a commercial communication system over the next few years.

Early 20th century radio systems transmitted messages by continuous wave code only. Early attempts at developing a system of amplitude modulation for voice and music were demonstrated in 1900 and 1906, but had little success.

World War I accelerated the development of radio for military communications, and in this era the first vacuum tubes were applied to radio transmitters and receivers. Electronic amplification was a key development in changing radio from an experimental practice by experts into a home appliance. After the war, commercial radio broadcasting began in the 1920s and became an important mass medium for entertainment and news.

  1. Imagine meeting your suicided brother’s rapists, and you had a lot of tools. So to speak. That’s that second song, to me. They’re all mostly dead, but still. Turn up the bass for the second half. Phil is a phenom on drums.

    It’s something I wish I could take to heart.`

  3. Turn up both bass and volume. Bobby has been my sensei for 25 years. He doesn’t even know.

I don’t need an autograph. I am one. And he doesn’t even know. 😀

It’s fun to know this. I need a microphone. I wish I could show Bobby what he taught me.

Back in the very early 60s I had a fried whose family was into ham radio. His dad was a commo guy with a major radio company that had military contracts and got first dibs at radio equipment being swapped out for newer stuff.
Their 2-car garage was stuffed with it, huge cabinets and racks with radios and amplifiers using tubes the size of quart and gallon jars. When they were turned on there were glowing filaments all over and the smell of hot electronic components and ozone was everywhere. Their backyard had a forest of antennas and neighbors were scared they’d attract lightening though the truth was the antennas actually protected them.
They were the ones that got me interested in ham radio and electronics though I didn’t get anywhere as deep into it as they were. Now that I can sit on my back porch here and order a pizza for my son 1500 miles away just using my tiny smartphone sorta makes that whole ham radio thingie rather quaint.

Well there was the PRC-10 (have one in the garage) and the PRC-25. Early 25 had that damn battery box stuffed with D-cells before they went to that ‘loaf’ battery. Was bigger than the PRC-10 but used same antennas and mic, if I remember correctly.

This reminded me of the hodgepodge of crap gear we had when I got there. The AF wasn’t prepared for much more than a weekend at the beach so we had for web gear and personal stuff, whatever they could drum up.
It was a massive and rapid buildup and we were 22 miles from the Army at Qui Nhon by Hiway 1 and over 30 miles by the back road. If it weren’t for the Korean unit outside the base we’d have been toast. We were deep in one of the VC’s oldest areas, all alone.
The AF didn’t allow its member to carry weapons, ours were locked up in Conex boxes by the barracks and couldn’t be accessed without the CO and someone else coming to the box and opening it. Procedures required the troops to sign for their weapons, pick up bandoleers of ammo and magazines then report to your post and get ready. Now our, and most, barracks were right up against the main fence – a small ditch protected by a double barbed wire emplacement. Even if the CO and alternate were to throw themselves into the face of oncoming troops and fire to issue the guns there was still the delay of signing for the weapon, getting the mags and ammo and putting it all together while getting into a fighting position to take on attacking troops that had all of this done and ready days ago.
When I got there with my small cadre the base was still being built. We had no uniforms other than what ewe brought, laundry was minimal and as the AF doesn’t usually play with soldier stuff we had to report to the supply point for an issue of whatever field gear they had – mostly stuff scrounged from the Army or, allegedly, purchased from the black market where stuff that had been stolen from incoming shipments had been diverted. I had web gear that was composed of items from WWII thru the new nylon backpacks. The VC had nicer tack.
The M-16s weren’t all in yet, we each were issued a weapon to be used and I do believe they were scrounged from stocks we’d brought over to arm the Vietnamese militia. In the racks were M-1 and M-2 carbines, M1A1 Thompsons and a few M-14s. It looked more like a sales desk at a gun show.
Again, the AF doesn’t like to play or be confused with soldiers so on base our radios were not standard military ones. We could only talk to ourselves, only special Airpersons trained to recognize their places in the AF-real military spectrum could talk to soldiers on a radio. For on-base use during an attack we had a ‘brick’ radio made by (I think) RCA. It was a bit larger than 3 bricks glued together, had a combination handle and handset holder that ran lengthwise on the body that held the workings and the telephone handset and had a short wire whip antenna. For camouflage it was a bright silver and the only way you could transport it was by carrying it in your hand by the bulky handle. You can imagine an attack on the base, you’re running to your position after getting your rifle and lunchbox radio issued, one in either hand…
If there were Army responding the only way we could talk to them or they to us was for the Army to use their radios to contact our TOC who would then verbally relay the info to us. Wed reply to the TOC and they’d verbally relay to the Army what we’d said. The Army would reply….
There are times when I think the only reason we survived was by the grace of God and that Korean detachment just outside our gate – the VC/NVA were scared to death of them.
Sorry, Col Ken tripped a memory mine.

It is unbelievable. I could put the entire contents of my Commodore 64 on 1/10th of a CD-ROM. Two shoeboxes worth of floppy disks, on a quarter-inch of CD-writing.

My parents had been married 63 years when Mom passed away. She had been the cheerful talker of the two. As a result Dad didn’t say much. I think he really just enjoyed hearing her talk.

After Mom passed away Dad opened up completely. I made sure I had at least an hour to talk any time I called. He told me so much about his generation and his father’s generation it was wonderful. My big regret is that I didn’t write the stories down. It is long past the time I could have said ‘now what was that story about Great Aunt Sissy?’.

Last week I mentioned to my grandson that one of his grandfather’s jobs as a boy was paperboy. He said “what’s that! ??” I had to start from the description of what a newspaper was. Journaling would be a great way to pass along history.

Your dad probably started talking to you because he didn’t have your mom to talk to any more. I made very close contact with a cousin who started calling me when my mom died. She had always talked to mom a couple of hours a week, and transferred it to me.

Yes, very true. After Mom passed away my father started a written correspondence with his cousin’s daughter. He would tell me interesting things about her letters. (He lived in CA, she lived in MO.) So I would say he just enjoyed hearing what women thought. It was a habit of most of his life.

Now that I think of it, I wonder what happened to those letters. My sister that passed away a couple of years ago may have had them.

Stella had posted that same LinkedIn Profile yesterday.

Where the bomber talked about liberating the island and previously talked about being in New York. I thought the grandfather went to Philippines as an American. (I don’t know much about the Philippines history so maybe it was only Philippines doing the fighting.)

      ******
      From the Profile:

“The first plastic surgeon to be observed by 8 million people in NY city Hospital.”

“He over through Communist Philippines liberated island. He built all hospitals in Philippines islands and sets standards highest level.”
      *******

The profile was so rambling I had a hard time following it. If he is part Filipino I am guessing the other part could be American Indian??

Eventually we’ll have a clearer picture. His cousin was sure willing to talk to the press.

When I sat down at my computer today I fully expected to see the main headlines cover the invasion caravan. Sadly that was not the case. (Tree of Life shooting had captured the headlines everywhere.)

Buried way down in the stories was Gen. Mattis authorization to add troops to the Southern Border.

Included in the article was this statement:

“The department will provide Defense Support to Civil Authorities with planning assistance, engineering support (temporary barriers, barricades, and fencing), fixed and rotary wing aviation support to move CBP personnel, medical teams to triage, treat and prepare for commercial transport of patients, command and control facilities, temporary housing for CBP personnel, and personal protective equipment for CBP personnel.”

Don’t know if the personal protective equipment means guns but with that and the statement about “medical teams to triage” it clearly shows they recognize the troops will be in harm’s way.

The one on gambling I voted “yes” on because the Women’s League of Voters wanted me to vote “No”.
