“It is much safer to be feared than loved because … love is preserved by the link of obligation which, owing to the baseness of men, is broken at every opportunity for their advantage; but fear preserves you by a dread of punishment which never fails.”
― The Prince

The problem is that society wants to punish the miscreants involved in MS-13 and ISIS, but they do not fear society one bit. Defiant and supposedly fearless except when it comes to their internal organizational agenda. MS-13 fear each other. ISIS fears their fake god.

He’s been dead for a long time. Same age approximately as Michelangelo.

What he says means about the same thing as Peace through strength. Better another country should fear us than love us.

Stella,
Your description of the meaning/purpose of Machiavelli’s teaching is remarked on in this article. Thought you might be interested.
“In foreign affairs, the U.S. has remembered in the nick of time what Machiavelli advised princes five centuries ago: Don’t seek to be loved, seek to be feared. The contrast with the Obama years must be painful for any honest leftist.”

My own observation is that President Trump’s military academy training really shows through in so many areas. Take this history snippet from Wikipedia as an example:
“The phrase and concept date to ancient times. Roman Emperor Hadrian (AD 76–138) is said to have sought “peace through strength or, failing that, peace through threat”. Hadrian’s Wall was a symbol of this policy.”
Today’s example of the President’s peace through threat is financial to Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
