Stella's Place 
Collectibles. Everything is a collectible to someone somewhere. Except 3 people in 1 house have too much stuff all together. How do we pare down even the “nice stuff” to the best of? I suppose I could donate it all, but I wouldnt mind putting money into kiddos bank. How do you all make the decision ? Or are you going to let your kids do it when youre gone? I prefer not to wait myself.

We have recently gotten rid of probably half our possessions, maybe more. We will also get rid of some more furniture when we move. I have never in my life been happier with anything I have done, so much so that I am going back and tossing more out of stuff I have already been through.
We have given some of the few family keepers (we don’t really have stuff that rates as heirlooms except for maybe my grandparents’ old oak secretary and some very old dishes and crystal) to the kids, or will when we move. Some furniture is going to one son. I threw away the rest or donated it to Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity.
In the past I have deluded myself that I would sell it. I never bother. If you will, it’s a good way to make some money.
For us the best way was drastic. My husband took a week’s vacation and we started in the attic and worked our way down. I set aside things to give away as we went, but mostly we threw out stuff and hauled it to the dump.
The way I was able to do this probably isn’t going to work for someone as young as you. We want a small house, very small. I don’t want a lot of stuff I have to take care of, dust, etc. I have a pretty good idea of what I want, and what I want it to look like. I have spent the last few months eyeing my possessions and thinking about what they mean to me. Most are not going to make the cut, and some of the things that are are really strange, but I love them.
To give all credit where it’s due, I could never have done it without my husband, physcically or mentally. He is a workhorse, organized, and ruthless about cleaning out stuff. I was piddling along and would never have done in a year what we did in a week, but since that week I have been making great progress on small stuff like our closet, dressers, books, etc.
If you keep control of your possessions your older self will be grateful. We looked at most of that stuff and wondered why we had ever kept it.

Ty, Menagerie. Ive got the gamut of antiques, sentimental possessions, useful things, photos(which I organized and learned not to make prints every time but a cd) and books. My husband has a man cave that is beyond full and spilling over. So I dropped off that car load the other week but have found a bunch of collectibles and baby stuff and more. Arghhh.

My kids never thought much of the photographs we took – until they got older.
About a month ago my middle DIL asked if I had any pictures of her hubby and I sent her all of the ones I had from his birth to when his mom and I divorced. She put together a slide show for his 50th birthday party and the pix I had composed over 50% of it, during his busy life between the divorce and his marriage to his current wife (our family having LDS roots practices serial polygamy) had few pictures. He was amazed at the show, he hadn’t seen these pix in dec ades, had forgotten about them completely. It was the best present bhe received.
Her scanning them in guarantees some level of preservation over the coming years as long as whoever gets them converts them to whatever new formats evolve. I keep on thinking how close we came to losing them during Katrina but that just wasn’t in the cards. If you have family pix it might be best to have them hi-res scanned in and saved online and in hard media for anyone wanting to have a copy.

Better to downsize a little at a time. I have friends who have had to go through their parents’ belongings after they died and it was a nightmare. Some chose not to even try, and hired somebody to come in and take everything. My mom and dad moved several times in the last 10 years of their lives, into smaller places each time. So, Mom gave away special things that she knew her nieces and others would want. It pleased her to do that. Of course, she was in her 80’s at the time, not 50’s.
I have read that you enjoy the things you have, and then you can give them away and let someone else enjoy them because you have the memories. I am divesting myself of a lot of stuff. Some of it from my parents.

My parents came out of Depression Oklahoma, from years of having very little & making do with what they had. My father did not hoard, but rather saved things which could be of use. He had a chest in the garage with every kind of nut, screw, bolt, nail & fastener, shelves of electical motors & parts to repair them, tools & parts of various things so he could do repairs. Mostly could lay his hands on what he needed to fix most everything. He died suddenly & years later we had to empty the garage so my mother could move; laughed at things as we brought them out, remembered old times, etc. Held a garage sale on the front yard, made enough money that Mama & I flew to the Bahamas for a week’s vacation! People bought everything (like grocery cart wheels, bicycle chains & refrigerator parts were going out of style)!! One little girl bought a big box of Christmas bows for a nickel & was so very pleased with herself.
My mother saved jars. There were no ziploc bags or Tupperware, Saran wrap cost money, so we saved leftovers in jars. Of course, it was a chore to match the right lid with the jar….

My grandmother did that. She would save napkins, waxed paper plates, margarine containers, etc. Same depression mindset too. Always sewing things instead of tossing.
She always make “cozies” for her ice tea glasses by cutting off the ribbed part of old socks and sewing a hem on the cut end. Then just slide it over your glass. No more slipping and easily washable.

When I cleaned out the attic, I found a really old drill. It had been glued back together and the handle was duck taped on. LOL My dad had a new drill, but never got rid of that old one.

My Grandmother and my Mother never threw anything away that could be used again. I have to admit I have a problem with that to a point, but they serve a purpose, like newspapers and paper bags, great fire starters for the wood stove and plastic bags make great bathroom trash bags.
I also have tons of canning jars, but I do use them just not as many as I have. lol

I dunno, Gil. I’d love to live without a bunch of stuff around. I think mine will be waiting until we move to a smaller house at retirement. (That’s 10 years for my hubby and a good bit longer for myself. 😕)

We had our runoff election today. I voted, but outside of a few races it really doesn’t matter to me who wins, because it was the worst choices I’ve ever had to vote for on a state level.
I hate the left turn our state has taken.

That is so sad. I’m really sorry to hear that. I have to hold my nose and vote for Lyin’ Ted Cruz in November and he’s going to be at an event I’m attending soon. I’m not a fan of Ted’s, obviously, but Beto O’Rourke cannot become a TX senator!!!!

He would be so much better than what we were left with for governor and lt. governor. I probably would have stayed home, but I wanted to try and get the conservatives elected for Superintendent of Education and Labor Commissioner. It didn’t work and the liberals with R’s after their name won.

I really think what is happening in Oklahoma needs to be a lesson to the rest of the country. If a leftist union can do the damage they’ve accomplished here, they can accomplish it anywhere. Make no doubt the state and national teachers union were victorious here. They got pretty much everything they wanted, higher taxes, raises and they succeeded in getting many of their enemies out of the legislature.

When I voted in the runoff I was talking to a couple of ladies, what they had to say made me see just how screwed up the minds are of voters.
These were two women in their 70’s, church ladies, conservative and Republican most of their life and rural all their lives. They were going to vote for the OKC mayor for governor and Hoffmeister for Superintendent. Their reasoning was their grandkids needed and deserved a good education that could only be provided by paying teachers more money. Their argument for more taxes was they always had to pay taxes so for all of us still in the workforce it was our turn to cough up the money.
They were fine with the increased gas tax because they don’t drive that much anymore, fine with the cigarette tax because they don’t smoke.
I pointed out to them that now the teachers are wanting a 10% increase in property taxes. No bother for them as they’re on social security only and have reached the age where in Oklahoma you don’t have to pay property taxes.
I admit I got a little snippy and told them well since they were fine with everyone else paying taxes, maybe Oklahoma needed to change the law no longer allowing seniors and exemption on property tax. (Don’t get me wrong I support the exemption, but they ticked me off.)
When we’ve lost the older generation that should be the smart generation, we’re pretty much lost.

I don’t think so. My husband asked me if I asked how they liked the fact their granddaughters would be taught it was alright to kill babies, be whatever sex the felt like, etc.
I told him I just dropped it and went and picked up my ballot.

Speaking of what the teachers have done and then I hear on the news another Oklahoma teacher was arrested. This one for child porn, but the statement by the school was nothing to worry about this arrest happened away from school and the kids were never in danger.
Yeah, I kind of think a man distributing child porn and in possession of naked pictures of children put children in danger.
He only makes number 2 this week for some form of child sexual abuse and number 3 for the month.
What’s worse is out of all of them arrested this year for rape or molestation, 9 had previous convictions. I guess they’re not even doing background checks anymore.

This one was a FBI bust and an Arizona man was also arrested, but it wouldn’t surprise me if more teachers across the country are caught up in it.
Those type are drawn to schools which is why schools should do a better job hiring teachers.
What gets me though is almost all the teachers charged this year in Oklahoma are women. Then people act like it’s not as bad because it’s a woman with a boy.

I saw a mother on FB defending him. She says he was her kids favorite teacher and even if he is guilty of what they claim it doesn’t change that he’s an excellent teacher and she would trust him with her kids. Then she went on that people needed to not talk about it on FB because he has 4 kids and a lovely wife.
I swear I think something has gotten into the water in Oklahoma.

I wonder how she’d feel if they identify one of her children or their friends or even one of his own children?

Liberal Republicans have came out of the woodwork this year in Oklahoma.
I have a theory though of these people who defend teachers and others who are child molesters or even the guy who had sex with a horse. I believe it’s because they don’t want to accept they misjudged someone so bad, so as to avoid facing that they turn total stupid and defend them as it’s not true or something had to make them do it. Including blaming a kid as they still do on the local teacher who molested her foster child.

I’m making my version of michellc roasted potatoes right now to have with leftover sausage and veggies. I think of you every time! I use melted butter/olive oil, Siracha chili sauce, salt and potato chunks (I leave the skin on), and top with grated Parmesan. Bake at 375 for about 40 minutes.

My first response is that I’ll be dead and won’t care but I’m pretty sure mine will see the benefits of getting familiar with eBay over sentimentality. Most of my collectables are here due to my interests and not theirs so I can propose but they’ll dispose.
I’ve disposed of a few things to those I feel have the grounding to properly deal with them but there are other things, like my older cookbooks, that I see hitting a wall somewhere as my grandchildren don’t seem to have the same interests in cooking as I do. There are a few things my kids, grand/great grand kids have expressed interest in (“Gee grandpa, when you die who’s going to get ‘X”) but they ain’t ready for them yet.
The picture above reminds me though that one of our main interests is ‘who’ll take care of any animals left when we leave.

Every time I see adoptions there are always pets due to death or infirmity. Usually the older ones too. Its sad but there are people who take them.

My little doggie was 4 when I got her. Her owner had died and she and her sister were taken to the pound. The workers there said they were too cute and could be adopted so called a no-kill shelter to come get them. They were not very socialized to people, but the sister was adopted before mine was. Mine has made a very good companion.
My friend has made arrangements with other friends for her cat and dog. I had her give me their names and numbers in case I was the first to find out about her passing. Just trying to cover all bases.

That’s one reason I was so hesitant about getting a puppy at my age. Because he is pure bred, it probably wouldn’t be a problem. In any case, I’m sure my daughter would take him. If not, the breeder asked that I give her first right of refusal to adopt him if my family didn’t.

I decided to give all my money to the pet shelter, so they have to make sure they find the right places for whatever pets I have at the time. Of course, if Czar outlives me, he’ll just have to take care of them. Actually, it’s mostly his job now anyway….

My friend is leaving her house, her money, her car, everything to the SPCA here. They call her personally to be sure she makes it to any function. It’s been fun going with her.

We recently have had to deal with a family member having to go to the nursing home. I’ve always thought about when you die, now I have a different perspective. You need to either be a millionaire or a pauper, because anywhere in between and it’s all gone.

Yup, Medicare has it set up to where if your family can’t/won’t take care of you and your’re not bucks-down and can pay for a nursing home you’re gonna have to give dam,n near everything you’ve got to the Feds to fund your nursing home stay before the Feds start kicking in cash.

Medicare won’t pay anything we found out unless it’s short term, you hit the 100 day mark and not one more red cent. You have to then apply for medicaid. We figure our family member has enough to pay for care for about 6 or 7 months. Then we honestly don’t know what will happen then because they have over the limit on a burial policy, you’re only allowed $10,000 in this state and it’s a $15,000 burial policy.
It sucks to get old, I told my kids when I get old and can’t take care of myself I’m just going to disappear out in the woods and die of dehydration. lol

Medicare…medicaid…same money, different pocket. Thing is the government can’t find an acceptable way to put the sick/elderly out on an ice flow so they just milk you into extinction.

They do take your social security check and leave you with $50 a month, very generous of them. lol
I honestly never thought about any of this, made out a will and all of that planning on when we die, now we’re going to have to start planning on not dying. lol

They take your physical assets right down to life insurance – they make you pay to die in some modicum of comfort while they pay illegals and Usual Suspect Rat voters to live in relative comfort.

I have a rule if it is sitting in the garage, the basement, the attic the extra bedroom, a closet, under my bed and I’m not using it , there is someone else who could be and would be using it if they had it so I give it away.
I know I am an odd duck when it comes to this stuff but it is just an inanimate object if someone can use it God bless them.
Full disclosure my parents had 3 houses at one time all of them had stuff in them.
Plus my dad had paid close to 2,000 a month for storage units for over 2 decades. We’ve had stores, businesses and stuff. Bothe my sisters are savers. I’m a minimalist. Even wall paper drives me crazy so maybe you should just ignore my answer as me being a goofball when it comes to this kind of stuff 🙂 !

Had to eat fast. Had a 9:30 appt. at the dentist to cap two teeth on the bottom. What an ordeal. Now I am home and I can’t even drink out of a straw because I can’t feel my whole bottom jaw. LOL Oh, well. Mornin’ Nyet, everyone. 🙂

Shouldn’t be feeling pain, I don’t think. Hope you feel better soon, but I would call the dentist and ask about pain and pain relief.

Most of the pain is because of them pushing my mouth open more and more to get the equipment in. I took some asprin and that is helping a little. I can’t take the n-saids because of stomach ulcers.

Thank you. I’m sure there is nothing wrong. And, it is getting a little better. I was thinking while they were working on me, I probably should go to a pediatric dentist. Maybe their tools are smaller.

I take a 1200 mg lecithin every time I take an NSAID pill & find I don’t get the stomach pain. Read about that trick about 30 years ago, & haven’t had the pain except when I skip the lecithin. Lecithin is just soy oil, so it’s neutral for most people (I have a friend who is allergic to soy!?!).

Adam Lovinger, a former Defense Department analyst, never expected that what he stumbled on during his final months at the Pentagon would expose an integral player in the FBI’s handling of President Donald Trump’s campaign and alleged Russia collusion.
Lovinger, a whistleblower, is now battling to save his career. The Pentagon suspended his top-secret security clearance May 1, 2017, when he exposed through an internal review that Stefan Halper, who was then an emeritus Cambridge professor, had received roughly $1 million in tax-payer funded money to write Defense Department foreign policy reports, his attorney Sean Bigley said. Before Lovinger’s clearance was suspended he had taken a detail to the National Security Council as senior director for strategy. He was only there for five months before he was recalled to the Pentagon, stripped of his prestigious White House detail, and ordered to perform bureaucratic make-work in a Pentagon annex Bigley calls “the land of misfit toys.” His security clearance was eventually revoked in March 2018, despite the Pentagon “refusing to turn over a single page of its purported evidence of Lovinger’s wrongdoing,” Bigley stated. Conservative watchdog group, Judicial Watch, recently filed a federal lawsuit against the Defense Department to obtain the withheld records.
Lovinger also raised concerns about Halper’s role in conducting what appeared to be diplomatic meetings with foreigners on behalf of the U.S. government because his role as contractor forbids him from doing so, according to U.S. federal law…

Ahhhhh…whistleblowers- he’s probably on his way to a removal just down the line, hope he has a resume ready.
No level of government likes whistle blowers and despite their passing ‘laws’ to protect them they still leave in ways to skewer and grill them. Y’all remember Ernest Fitzgerald, the guy who blew the whistle on the C-5A aircraft program going from a $400-million under bid to a $2-billion OVERBID fiasco? Well he never got his props, as have other notable snitches that city thru Federal levels who’ve been shafted for their public service.
As I’ve said before, when governments pass laws to protect those the government’s responsible for screwing in the first place, government makes sure it leavers back doors. When there was an outcry after Desert Storm about how employers, governments included, found ways of dumping employees who were in the Guard and Reserve who were mobilized the Feds passed the USERRA law. It was supposed to protect the troops but it was worded so that any employer could quite easily dump any employee and the Feds used it like a club to go after Guard/Reserve in Federal employment.
If you’re gonna be a whistleblower be prepared to have the full weight of the bureaucracy you’re going up against come down on you – more betterer to just anonymously leak the stuff and stay out of the limelight.

Wonder how many innercity supermarket openings he does a year? My most poignant memory of him is his phony post-Katrina ‘displaced workers’ bus trip into NOLA, something that was conveniently disappeared from history.

Early on after Katrina he loaded up a bus full of displaced New Orleans workers whom were eagerly looking for work in NOLA doing recovery but were ‘prevented’ from doing so. It wasn’t openly stated but hinted at the reason was hoards ‘f ‘Mexican’ workers coming in and stealing their jobs. It was later determined that many, if not most, of the workers on the bus were not NOLA natives and had been picked up just to create press coverage. The incident was put on the then still limping news once and lost to history and indifference.

I was listening to the local radio on the way back from the vet (booster shots for Tucker). Seems she has a gold plated casket, surrounded by all shades of pink roses. It’s at the African American History Museum (I think that’s what it’s called).
I read somewhere the other day that she died without a will. If so, that really stupid for someone who had as much as much money as she had.

Yeah, I was looking at the casket and though it looked gold plated I wonder if it weren’t just the light on the coating. Guess you can take it with you, just can’t use it.
Note how a number of celebs croak sans will – I wonder if they realize a large number of their friends are just ‘here for the beer’? Then again, considering the numbers of remoras celebs and their $$$$$ attract, wills are just income opportunities for civil lawyers.

She should have had something. She has a special needs child, I believe. A trust would have made sense.
The irony is that the Republican tax cuts will save her estate several million dollars (5.5 million outright, and the 40% that would have been levied on the 5.5) in estate taxes.

When my aunt died her will stated eveything was to be divided among her four remaining siblings, but some relatives of her long deceased husband got shark lawyers to sue, stating she did not mean to leave them out. Those lawyers told the estate lawyers to either cut them in now, or they would keep the suit going until there was no money left because the lawyers had used it all up. So our families settled for half of the estate. Count on celebrities having the same problems..

Update: early last week I made an appointment with an ophthalmologist to check out my eyes further than what my primary care physician did. Prior to that I’d gotten the approval from my Medicare provider via my regular MD’s office. Yesterday, I got curious as to what my new ophthalmologist looked like; so I broke my Internet silence and looked him up. Lo and behold, he’s not an ophthalmologist but an optometrist (an unapproved expenditure by Medicare, and NOT what I needed or asked for). So I called the ophthalmologist appointment clerk and told her I needed to see one of the MDs not an OD. She apologized and then said no doctor had an opening until DECEMBER 7!!! If I have any deterioration prior to that I will have to go to Emergency!!!
Such is the state of the doctor/specialist shortage in the Idaho Panhandle. Usually going to any specialist is a 1-2 month wait, but 3-1/2 months?! I might as well be living in Canada with the long waits for specialists they have.
So my advice to anyone planning to move to a sparsely populated state or area of any state, check out what the doctor to people ratio is. I honestly didn’t even think of such a thing having come from Vancouver, WA which has no shortage and, of course, Los Angeles which likely has an over-supply (along with lawyers). C’est la vie!

We drive at least 45 minutes to a large city for most medical services, and 90 minutes to New Orleans if necessary. Except for the neurologist, Czar’s experience with local doctors has been poor. The good thing about the New Orleans Northshore area is that many NO docs live up here & have satellite offices here where they practice 1-2x per week.

Lucille, is there not an MD in Spokane or Cour d’Alene? I had to drive an 80 mile round trip for the closest Opthomologist to me for my cataracts. It took 5 trips to get everything done! I hope you find someone soon!

Prepare to hear really bad things coming out of CA because of this. Jerry Brown has confirmed the inmates are running the asylum.
California will become the first state in the U.S. to end monetary bail for those awaiting trial after Gov. Jerry Brown signed landmark legislation to reform the bail system on Tuesday.
Senate Bill 10, which goes into effect on Oct. 1, 2019, was approved by the state legislature a week ago before being sent to the governor, according to KTLA sister station KTXL in Sacramento.
“Today, California reforms its bail system so that rich and poor alike are treated fairly,” Brown said in a news release announce the signing.
The legislation eliminates money-based bail as an option for someone to be released from jail awaiting trial.
Instead, counties will follow a pretrial risk assessment of a person before releasing them.
“Wealth is not the measure of any woman or man. By eliminating cash bail, we are saying that those with the least ability to pay should not be released or incarcerated solely on the basis of their wealth or poverty. SB 10 is only one leg of the long journey toward perfecting our justice system, but it is an important one,” Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon said in a news release.
The bill faced sharp criticism from the bail bond industry and the ACLU. Critics have said the bill would cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars to establish, would increase the number of people in jail and would also give more power to judges.
The California Police Officers Association had come out against the bill before switching their stance to neutral.

I was discussing with a person today about how our society became so thin skinned and see “ism” everywhere. We both agreed social media seems to play the largest factor these days because honestly few pay any attention to television media anymore.
Tonight I saw a meme on FB, a racing page that I assume one butt hurt person had to get all their friends to attack. How the meme was seen as racist is beyond me.
