Today’s Sousa march is a well-known one, written in 1896, called El Capitan. This was the march played by the Sousa Band, augmented by over a hundred men, as they led Admiral Dewey’s victory parade in New York on September 30, 1899. It was a matter of sentiment with Sousa, because the same march had been played by the band on Dewey’s warship Olympia as it sailed out of Mirs Bay on the way to attack Manila during the Spanish-American War.

Well, it’s called camping, but it is in a very nice RV. When you have your own bathroom, refrigerator, queen-sized bed and heat/air conditioning, I have a hard time calling it camping. At my stage of life and arthritic condition, it is a great way to travel!

We got our butts kicked tonight, again. Since July 3, it’s been an amazing ride, and we’re all the ones pedaling this machine called a restaurant. Every day has been progressively busier, and we’re all in our groove. Make it busier, we got it. This is the best kitchen team and FOH team I’ve ever worked with. Our little hostess girl said she couldn’t understand why the whole restaurant’s staff gets along so well, and why there’s no drama. I said, “The word you’re looking for is LOVE.”
A light bulb went off over her head, right then. She got it.
Our whole staff knows each other’s messed up former or current lives, and our whole staff loves our whole staff, with a Christian love, because of that. Even if 95% of them don’t know that a little leaven leavens the whole loaf. It doesn’t take many Christians (yeast) to make the crew (bread) rise. Just a few.
The Fourth of July, Chef says, after we all arrive (and after he’s worked four hours before any of us got there, cutting lots and lots and lots of steaks), “Ok guys! I’m taking the night off! Call me if you need me!” And we rocked it so good he would have been proud, (and he is). He trusted this crew to work July 4 without a chef. That made us proud. We really do rock a kitchen. Health department lady walks in, at random intervals, and just opens her eyes real wide, turns around, and walks out like “Okay, you guys have the cleanest, most specced-out, labeled, and Serv-Safe kitchen I’ve ever seen. Have a nice day.” I’m surprised she hasn’t taken pictures, and shown it to all the nasty a&& kitchens she sees in the course of a day, because ours is hospital clean.
Last night was busy from open to close. Tonight was a 27-top of the weirdest cult of, I guess, Christians, I’ve ever seen in my entire life. It was a surreal group of people, like a church group, but weird. I brought my big Bluetooth speaker out, for this party, at my bartender’s request, and played this song for the party (much to the dismay of several other patrons of ours not associated with this weird crew of adults and children, including a dude that apologized to his date for bringing her there, on the night of their first kiss, because of the insanity of it all):
It was an obvious “church” group, and I played this, at high volume, on a JBL speaker, at this party’s, and my bartender’s request (demand). I got an ill feeling, and every one of us agreed that it was the most surreal thing we’ve ever seen in all our years in the industry.
They all got up and danced to this song, and it was INCREDIBLY surreal, because some of the young men were wearing robes, and there were several (my age) older men dancing too, and a bunch of little girls. They literally, LITERALLY got up and danced, all of them. It was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen in a place of business. Creeped me out somehow.

For our ship we have the Kalmar Nyckel (US), a reproduction of the 1625 ship of the same name which brought Swedish settlers to establish the colony of New Sweden in 1638, an area that is now Wilmington, Delaware.
She is certainly one of the most intricately and colorfully detailed ships:
So I don’t know what’s going on here, but the ship’s cat is real (see Caturday), but the dog is wood, and his tongue is sticking out! Hmmmm…
So Gil, I do not know if the illustrations in the book are in color, most of Pyle’s paintings I’ve seen are, but maybe you can request a copy from your library for the little guy! 🙂

Having read MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall when I was in high school, it added to my love of the sea. It was a romanticized version of what really happened, of course. But effective just the same.

I’m thinking unless Musk comes up with an idea the boys are there for the long haul. Monsoon rains expected this weekend. Five hours? I can’t imagine there is any way those boys are going to be ready for 5 hours of darkness, scuba gear and basic sensory depravation for the better part of 5 hours before the more severe period of the monsoon season begins.
I’m ignorant about this but it sounds like the Seal died in a flooded tunnel, because 1) his oxygen tank ran out and 2) the chambers where the fresh tanks are located have become oxygen depleted. The chamber the boys are in, which looks rather large, must have small vents to the surface that is replenishing oxygen or there must be fresh oxygen being pumped into the chamber?

Had interesting time at nail salon yesterday getting pedicure. The owner came here from Vietnam forty years ago with nothing, worked two jobs most of the time. No government help. Paid lots and lots of taxes. Too many he says but then when Trump elevted his taxman tells him it is gonna be better for small businesses and he should stop two jobs and set up business for his young wife and daughter and work for her. So he did and year ago opened salon. (He has some grown sons from first wife. Went back to Vietnam to marry and bring back 2nd wife who was about 15 years younger. Anyway, he cannnot stop talking about Trump. He loooooves him. Now he own own business and does nails with wife and sees young daughter all the time now and they taken care of if he die.
He says cannot trust Rocket Man and Trump knows this and he trusts president. He said there might be ww3 and hope if so, on President Trump’s watch. He says communism is bad, evil and Obama give our country to them. He hates China. Says China runs Vietnam, N. Korea, and he names other places. He says China need us we don’t need them. He wants to stop unfair trade so China will be stubborn and hurt themselves by not trading with us. He says communist leaders always self-destruct and make their people pay the price.
I noticed he teared up everytime he Presient Trump.

I wouldn’t say that China controls or even has a toe hold in Vietnam.
During the Vietnam War China did supply NV wikth some military goods but the bulk of NV’s supplies came from Russia and the Bloc. Haiphong was full of Russian/Russian chartered ships and after the war while China tried to invade North Vietnam (and failed miserably), Russia continued to supply Vietnam, opened up military bases and used banned weapons to help NV in its genocidal campaign against the Hmong.
China and Vietnam are at odds over the Spratly Islands and China’s territorial sea claims that bring ‘Chinese’ waters almost to northern Vietnamese beaches. Vietnam’s been slithering up against Russia again, giving Russia military basing rights again, buying submarines and top-line aircraft from Russia and in general moving more into thev Russian sphere. This plays into both Russian and Vietnamese needs to block China. If you look at Russian moves in the areas surroinding China Russia’s created treaties, built bases (some mothballed but there ‘just in case’) and generally seemsc to be following the type of containment plan the US did during the Cold War. Vietnam’s also greatly improving its relations with India, another Russian client and Chinese antagonist.

For whatever reason the media seems to be ignoring whaty’s going on in Asia – much to the Chinese government’s delight – and in order to find out what’s going on you have to sample a number of offshore sites. Also, much of the US doesn’t believe that anything over 20 minutes old is relevant to what’s going on now so tie-ins to what’s happening now just don’t get made.
Right now we’re focused on NK as the potential trigger for an Asian war while China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malasia and Taiwan are just one incident away from a shooting war over the Spratly island’s ownership. The Philippines and China have been building and tearing down military facilities on the islands for years and the Philippines and Vietnam are getting more strident in their opposition to Chinese claims on the Spratlys, especially Vietnam as China claims ownership of Vietnamese territorial waters practically up to the VN shoreline. Wnen was the last time you heard about the Spratly Islands on the nightly news? And this mess has been growin incrementally worse for over ten years.

The Spratlys could well be the Sarajavo of WW III if it goes south. With Taiwan, the Philippines and Vietynam all being bullied by China the potential for an armed slip up, especially with Taiwan, is a reality. Stay tuned, sports fans.

They’re running an air line to the spot where the team’s trapped. They could also bring in oxygen tanks or rebreathers to tide them over as the line’s strung.
Musk seems to be showing that capitalism is more effective than governments in responding to disasters, while the government’s wringing bits hands Musk’s coming up with viable solutions, mostly of his own profit-driven work. Seen anyone from Pyongyang, Havana or Caracas offering up alternatives?

That’s what I was thinking that Musk is going to be the boys best chance. He thinks. He is considering some type of tubing to run through the tunnels so there is less possibility of tanks catching in narrow areas and more of a guide for the boys. (Oxygen is at 15% at the moment)

Oxygen levels drop in cave trapping Thai soccer team
Oxygen levels have dropped to 15 percent in the cave where flooding has trapped a Thai youth soccer team for two weeks. The risk of hypoxia and a forecast of additional rain in coming days has increased pressure on rescuers, who are considering a “buddy dive” plan, in which each of the boys would be paired with an expert cave diver. Many of the boys cannot swim, and drilling through half a mile of solid rock to rescue them from above is unlikely to be a feasible solution.

A very beautiful, statuesque friend of mine used to employ a similar tactic. She invented it one day when she was sitting in the wait area for her car to be finished at the car wash. Several uninteresting looking guys were eyeing her; so she got something out of her purse to read, more or less hoping they wouldn’t want to bother a woman who was so engaged.
Next thing she knew, however, one of them sat down next to her and started getting a tad too familiar. Having been brought up by a very devout mother who attended morning Mass every day, she showed him the religious missive she was reading and indicated that she had something really interesting to tell him about Jesus. The guy couldn’t get out of there fast enough. It makes me chuckle every time I think of that.

Normally, when I get into a debate with a conservative friend and we are at an impasse, with no hope for resolution, I try to ease the tension with levity, and say, “Well, when the revolution comes, I will put in a good word for you and your family.” To my friends in the Republican political and legal establishment who have not stood up to Trump: When the revolution comes, you are on your own, and I will be clamoring not for mercy but for a seat next to the guillotine, where I can do my knitting.
He hates you, he hates me, he has decided we are racist, homophobic, xenophobic debase humans who deserve the guillotine and no mercy.
He seems to be an advocate of abortion but his writing is so bizarre that I’m not sure on that but I have no desire to dig deeper into his diseased mind.

It sounded a little strange to me that they were supposed to have taken out the healthiest ones first.

Me too, but I thought maybe they wanted to get the boys most likely to make it out first.
