    Today’s state flower is Georgia’s Cherokee Rose

    The photo below shows a shrub in full bloom.

    Georgia designated the Cherokee rose (Rosa laevigata) as the official state, floral emblem in 1916. The Cherokee Rose is an evergreen climbing shrub that grows to heights of up to 20 feet. They blossom for brief periods of time in late March and early April, but occasionally produce a second group of blossoms. These lovely flowers have a clove-like fragrance. Like other roses it has thorns on its branches, but it is different in that the thorns are finer. The pear-shaped fruit is edible, but there is only a thin layer of flesh surrounding the many seeds. Sugar can be extracted from the fruit, & it is also used to ferment rose wine. Care must be taken when eating the fruit because there is a layer of hairs around the seeds just beneath the flesh of the fruit that can cause irritation to the mouth and digestive tract if ingested. The seed is a good source of vitamin E. It can be ground and mixed with flour or added to other foods as a supplement, but be sure to remove the seed hairs. Also, the bark of the rose’s root contains tannin and is used for dyeing cloth. It grows well throughout the state and thrives in many conditions, including in drought. A native of China, the Cherokee Rose arrived in the United States sometime in the early to mid 1700s and soon became an invasive species that subsumed other shrubs and vegetation. Less than 50 years later it appeared in gardens across Georgia and was planted by the Native American Cherokee in northern Georgia.

    The Rose is linked to Georgia’s past through the 1838 “Trail of Tears” in which thousands of Cherokee were forced out of Georgia. Cherokee chiefs prayed for a sign to give their women hope and the strength to care for their children. It is said that wherever a tear dropped, a Cherokee Rose bloomed.

    The current Cherokee Rose story is happier with the flower being honored through the annual Miss Georgia Rose Scholarship Pagent in Columbus, the Cherokee Rose Storyteller Festival, and the Cherokee Rose Scholarship which is awarded by Georgia’s garden association.

    The below horticultural print is from W. Robinson Flora & Sylva Prints by HG Moon 1903. I added the opening bud on the lower left from another print in the same series, as well as the rose hip from a photo. This was one of a very few images of the brightly colored seeds, which due to their beautiful color, I wanted to show.

    More about the ongoing saga of the baby ducks. The mama hasn’t come back. I talked to a neighbor about giving the babies to the duck on their patio, but she said they don’t accept other babies. So, I called the SPCA, which isn’t open yet. Then, I called the County Animal Control (I think that was the name) and he said he would put me in contact with Wildlife Control and they might take them. But, he said to wait another 5 hours for the mama duck to come back. He said she might show up since it is daylight now. His power is all out there, so he couldn’t do anything this morning anyway. Problem is, it is pouring rain. They are in a fairly sheltered spot, but they are still getting wet with nothing to cover them. Oh, and there are actually 8 of them.

      We all look like primates, with freeze-frame. All you have to do is find the right frame at 60 FPS, while we’re talking. Every one of us. The AP and the rest of the press has been doing this one weird trick for years. Obama with a Halo (a thousand times and more), Bush lookin’ like a monkey (two thousand times and more). It’s easy.

      Heck they made McCain look like a monstrous demon with light and framing, back when he was pretending to run against Obama.

    The above is Valerie Jarrett flanked by her parents. Her father James E. Bowan was a light skinned black American, born in 1923 and lived the life that would be envied by many poor white Americans.

    James Edward Bowman was an American physician and specialist in pathology, hematology, and genetics. He was a professor of pathology and genetics at the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago.

    Valerie’s mother Barbara T. Boman is whiter looking than me and was also born an American.

    Barbara Taylor Bowman is an American early childhood education expert/advocate, professor, and author. Her areas of expertise include early childhood care/education, educational equity for minority and low-income children, as well as intergenerational family support and roles. She has served on several boards and was the co-founder of Erikson Institute, where she pioneered the teaching of early childhood education and administration.

    1868:Robert Robinson Taylor was born on June 8, 1868, in Wilmington, North Carolina.

      Welllllll, there used to be a system back in the old days that rated a person’s ‘blackness’ through the relationship of black to white pregenitors. There were classifications such as quadroons (1/4 black), octarooons (1/8 black) and hexadecaroons (1/16th black). These were generally discarded as they no longerr served legal purposes and came to be seen as racist. Appears, however, that they can be resurrected by persons who wish to use their status for their own purposes.
      Reminds me of a gent at my old office. His family was Spanish, real Spanish as in ‘directly from Spain’. He decided that he wanted to use his status to upgrade his position so he filed for an EEO slot as ‘Hispanic’. The EEO folks had a fit, he was European and not from south of ze border but he persisted and argued the law didn’t prohibit him just because he was from Spain AND he had a rather common Spanish surname. They had to cave and give him the slot, hoisted on their own petard.

      It’s difficult, of course, to keep up on everyone in a Presidential Administration. And everyone obviously has different interests in life.

      Valerie Jarrett was the most influential person in BHO’s Administration and checking her out was imperative. Maybe it’s just me, but I find it strange that people didn’t know her ancestry since ancestry is something that’s important to both her and BHO and they made no bones about how they identified.

        Remember when her and Michelle were going to travel the world together after Barack escaped the White House?

        Yes she was the black mother that Obama never had and ruled like Hillary.

      It may have been racist and funny, but it was funny just the same.

      I’m glad Disney’s ABC just lost tens of millions of dollars, and their shareholders, too. Good for them. Virtue signalling over a single tweet is more important than tens of millions of dollars from their highest-grossing show.

      Otherwise, cancel every showing of Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and every other comedian that made any reference to race in their funny acts. Ask Sammy Davis, Jr. what’s the worst part about being a black Jew? The Germans made you sit in the BACK of the oven.

      Rosanne just found her safe space. It wasn’t inside Disney.

        You don’t get to insult former POTUS, Valerie Jarrett, while working for one of her arms.

        I bet she personally gave the order to cancel Rosanne’s show, and Disney said, “Yessir.”

        And Disney did as they were told to to, by their masters.

        Obama hasn’t weighed in yet on this. Probably only Jarrett knows even where he is.

        And you can bet she knows where he is. Under her thumb, as always.

        Have you watch Hollywood roasts? Ask any celeb or comedian if there is such a thing as a “safe space” at a Hollywood roast. Nope, there isn’t.

        But notice that nobody ever got up at any of these celebrity roasts and said, “How dare you!?”

        Their skin is thick. Except when they decide it’s not, for The Cause.

        I can’t wait for the Olsen Twins to roast the cast of Full House. I hope Corey Feldman joins in on that one.
