Hi Stella & Stellars I wanted to post these pictures, but there were too many, and the link mentions the footnall players who are completely inconsequential in comparison to our beloved vets who gave their last breathe for our country, so I guess just ignore the story’s 1st paragraph –
Why We Stand :

May God grant them strength and peace, and may we as individuals and a country honor and support them.
The projected active duty end strength in the armed forces for fiscal year 2017 was 1,281,900 service members. The total population of the USA for 19-64 year olds is roughly 185,211,000.

Today’s state flower is The Indiana Peony
Indiana is one of a handful of states that adopted non-native flowers as its state flower. Indiana has had four official state flowers. The carnation (native to England) was adopted by the legislature in 1913. The second, the flower of the tulip tree (actually native to Indiana), was adopted in 1923. Third, the zinnia (from Mexico) was adopted in 1931. The tulip tree itself was adopted as the state tree in 1931. In 1995, the Indiana Academy of Science joined forces with the Indiana Native Plant and Wildflower Society to launch the State Flower Project, an effort to select an Indiana native as the new official flower. A group of 55 experts and over 27,000 fourth-graders selected the same flower from a list of 13 native flora. The fire pink, with its tiny clusters of red starlike wildflowers, won over the judges. Despite attempts to propose the fire pink as the state flower, the measure never bloomed in the legislature.
Peonies are native to China, not Indiana, & they are one of the oldest plants cultivated. In ancient times peonies were believed to relieve headaches and help with asthma. With the arrival of the Chinese peonies in North America during the 1830s the popularity of peonies began to grow. By the 1850s numerous American nurseries began offering new varieties of herbaceous peonies
There are two types of Peony grown in home gardens: Garden Peony or Paeonia hybrids, and Tree Peony or Paeonia suffruticosa. Most are herbaceous perennial plants 1.6 – 5 feet tall, but some resemble trees 5 – 10 feet tall. The showy, fragrant flowers of the peony (Paeonia lactiflora) thrive in USDA Zones 3 to 8, and bloom profusely after a period of cold winter chill. Peonies do well in Indiana’s climate, producing flowers throughout the state. Peonies also make excellent cut flowers. and is extremely popular for decorating gravesites for Memorial Day. Peonies are known for their magnificent, showy flowers, colorful foliage and the ability to bloom year after year. In Indiana, descendants of some of the state’s earliest Peonies still grow today. The Peony is such a hardy plant that it will faithfully bloom for over 50 years if undisturbed. However, peonies can be very touchy when it comes to transplanting. Peonies are relatively easy to care for, thriving in sunny locations and tolerating a wide range of soil types. Two unsusual facts are: they are sensitive to their orientation to the sun, and ants are attracted to peonies because of the nectar that forms on the outside of the flower buds. The photo below gives an idea of the variety of colors and large flower size.
Herbaceous peonies typically burst their blooms for a few short weeks from late May to early June before the stems droop from the weight of the mammoth flowers boasting exotic 3 to 6 inch heavily scented blossoms. The flowers occur in single and double forms. Support is often required for tall, double hybrids. They have compound, deeply lobed leaves and large, often fragrant, flowers, ranging from red, pink, and white blooms. No particular variety or color was designated by the General Assembly giving Hoosiers plenty of Peonies to choose. Peony foliage is bold and striking, even in the fall when it usually embraces the reddish colors of autumn.
The painting below is by Deloros Lombardi. I liked the lightness of the petals, and the stem showing in the water through the clear vase.

Good morning Stella. I was thinking of you & Tucker yesterday.
I took a drive and visited a number of abandoned homesteads and in the process I came across an abandoned property where there were ‘blue’ lilacs in full bloom, absolutely gorgeous. I decided Tucker shouldn’t be the only one who got to indulge in lilac ‘sniffs’, so I dug up some shoots and will plant them by my bedroom window in hopes that they’ll thrive there.

Lilacs are pretty hardy! My huge bush was just a tiny twig when I planted it. I had to put a little ‘fence’ around it to protect it from dogs the first couple of years. Now it is as tall as my garage!
It has actually gotten out of control, so I will be pruning it back after it finishes blooming, on the advice of a landscaper. A lilac branch takes three years to bloom, I believe, so it will be a while before I see many blooms again, but I think it’s worth it.

See if you can find some peony bushes too on your visits to abandoned properties. They can live 100 years, you know.

:0) I’ve been trying..,,I think the reason I haven’t found any peony shoots yet, is that I’ve been concentrating on abandoned homesteads up by the Canadian border and there’s still snow in some areas.
If I don’t come across any peonies in the next month, I’m gonna expand my ‘hunting grounds’ and look at some places that are further south of me. Peonies do well here, so I know it’s just a matter of time.

They love cold winters, but be sure they have a lot of drainage wherever you plant them.

I have three, one with white flowers, one with light pink flowers and one with dark pink almost red flowers. Mine get so big they weigh down the stem, so I always cut my flowers and bring them in and put in a vase on my dining room table. This time of year my house always smell like fresh cut flowers.
Mine are already blooming though.

I wish someone would write, extensively, about how much of Europe is subsidized by the United States. I get so sick of hearing people in America whine about all the things that are free in Europe that stupid backwards America won’t make free – It’s free in Europe because America keeps footing the bill for them!
I would like to see no more aid, of any kind, to foreign countries, ever. Private donations are allowed, but no gov’t funds sent to anyone.

Well, I probably just did something stupid. It was pouring rain and I took my dog out front to pee. A duck has a nest in the inside corner of the wall near my door. There is a downspout there which had been poorly repaired and was spraying water out the seam right above the ducks. The poor mama duck was holding her wings out trying to protect the babies that were hatching, from the water, but the spray was hard and was hitting both walls hard and bouncing back under her wings on the babies. I know ducks are water birds, but it didn’t seem right that just hatched babies were having it poured on them.
So, I went to Walmart and bought that stuff that you can put on downspouts while it is raining and I hope it is enough to help. It is supposed to rain more tonight. Once they are all hatched, she will take them down to the lake. While I was fixing the down spout, I noticed it looks like there were a lot of dead babies. Sad. But, there were also some live ones because I could see them moving.

That’s not stupid at all Aus. I hope the remains ducklings survive. I know the momma duck will be protecting them, someone with more knowledge than me might be able to give you some good advice. It seems to me if there is any possible way for you to get the dead babies out you should so they don’t decompose and bring all the problems that would go along with that to their siblings. (((Aus))))❤️

I found a website where they sell duck eggs for raising. There was a lot of information on that site. So, I emailed them and asked some questions. I don’t know if the mama duck will leave the nest without the babies now. But, soon, maybe today, she will take them to water and abandon the nest. I plan to clean it out then.

I checked this morning and I counted 6 live babies. Actually, there could be more under her. Such a shame she started out with 15 or 20 eggs. But, that isn’t that unusual.

Guess what. I was wrong. She brought all the babies out and there are at least 13. Evidently they were just weak after they came out of the eggs. They look very healthy. She is a good mama and took good care of them.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
