9 lessons in growing the perfect peonies

Once they are established, they don’t take much care. Peonies can live for 100 years. I have Sarah Bernhardts. Beautiful!

Can they take the unrelenting, super hot heat and humidity for months? They are so pretty.
LikeLiked by 2 people
They take it here. My plants are in the hottest part of the yard, facing south, full sun, with a house on the east and west and a fence on the north. They don’t like wet feet, though. Soil needs to be well drained.

Now here’s the bad news, which I just found:
Peonies like cold winters and do best in zones 3 – 8. Herbaceous peonies need at least 400 hours of temperatures below 40 degrees while tree peonies need 100 – 300 hours in order to flower in late spring / early summer. In warm climates, peonies often fail to bloom.

I googled peonies and FL and most sites said they can grow in N. FL, but not lower in FL. Too few cold days.

I imagine it depends on the variety, so I would check before buying.

I don’t think they have a chance here in Central FL. Most winters it doesn’t stay below 40* all day any day, I don’t think.

Well, I can’t grow peonies. But I have Hibiscus, and they do well. And, I have palms which do too well, LOL. I have two pygmy date palms, one in a pot and one I put in the ground. The one in the pot is about 4 ft tall and the one in the ground is at least 12 ft tall. It must love this soil. So, I guess I shouldn’t complain.

I wish I could grow fig trees. I could, but would have to move them inside in the winter. Also citrus. I loved it when I visited my mother, among other things because they had grapefruit, orange, and lemon trees.

I went out this morning to check my fig bush (tree), and I already found 1 wee fig about as big around as my thumb! We had none at all last year, so maybe this is a good sign. My bush is 4 years old and as tall as my house!

Those things grow super fast! Once it starts producing you have to pick and clean up asap or sticky all over.

No problems, I’ll eat them off the bush! I also have a great recipe for preserves, that we love.
My fav way to eat them, is split them in half, char on the grill, melting a bit of goat cheese on them, then drizzle with a bit of balsamic vinegar. I can’t wait!

Ive never had that but seen them with blue cheese walnuts and bacon too. I love fig with some english cheddar…. yummy!

It took me 10 minutes to look through zone maps but tree peonies can grow here. They are very pretty. If I ever get my dream garden I will plant some. Ive got a tomato, pepper, pea and strawberries to watch for right now.

Ahhhh…someone else with sets in the ground. Sweating varmints, cold snaps, cut worms and other things that would make mere mortals (or folks with better sense) wonder why we don’t just take the money and buy at the srore.

Dang tomato worms ate my plants last year. Oh ive got a bunch of basil sprouting. Kiddo loves to see the food growing.

If you get tomato worms this year, give your kiddo a paper lunch bag, and have him gather the worms in it. Then set it on fire in a metal can. That’s what we had my daughter do when she was small.

We lucked out – found some heirloom real Vietnamese basil so we will have that for pho. Usual sweet basil, some Love and Thai basil, we’re sorta basil fans. Have the usual sages, some mint (mine, Czarina hates mint), rosemary and orgeano – pots all over the back patio.
We were thinking of putting in a large herb garden next to the patio – not so much for the herbs themselves but for the smell in hot weather.
I sweat the various plant eating bugs, I keep concentrated permethrin around, a super all purpose insecticide with minimal risk. I’ve pointed it out before but we can soak our outside clothes in it, let it air dry and they repel fleas and ticks for weeks – it lasts thru a few washes too. Also works as a livestock/dog dip.
LikeLiked by 1 person
No harm to their eyes? I just ordered some of it. What ratio do you use for dog dip?
LikeLike
About 1.5 ounces of 10% per gallon of water. Soak the dog, let it dry and it should be good for a few weeks. Keep the dog away from cats until it dries, permethin is toxic for them, but other than that you’re good to go. If the mix smells familiar it’s the same stuff many vets use for a dog dip and ranches for insect control on livestock. Might wanna wear gloves, it can be irritating for some folks and I would keep it away from their eyes.

Peonies are really Big Business on the Kenai Peninsula in Southcentral Alaska. We have many commercial growers here. White peonies are particularly popular for weddings.
Czar and czarina, I am sooooo envious of your garden! 90 foot rows, wow! And to be able to grow REAL tomatoes, sweet corn (Silver Queen) and okra…oh, devoutly to be wished! We do well with root crops here, but not with the hot-weather vegetables.

Summertime must include corn, okra, tomatoes, squash. All preferably served with a big ole pot of beans, some mashed potatoes and cornbread. Maybe turnip greens.
While I have no place for a garden, I live about 3 miles from the roadside farmers stand, right at the edge of the fields.
In a month or so it’ll be time to make the first tomato pie. Yum!

I hope Kanye listens to Sage Francis, and I know Kanye is learning.
His industry, and most of his fanbase, is sick, and evil, and wrong. And he is in a position to change it all for the better.
His former slaveowners, and his former masters, are attacking him daily for his message.
This isn’t D vs. R, this is slave vs. free. If you can’t keep up with the lyrics, because you’re old, Google lyrics Kanye Runaway in a separate tab. I had to.

“So we’ve all seen conservatives suddenly go liberal, right? David ‘Media Matters’ Brock is the first example that comes to mind. And there have been others. Sh* happens, right? And of course, the opposite happens as well, some liberals become conservative. But here’s the funny thing: there are a number of black liberals who have gone conservative, but not the opposite: I don’t think I’ve ever seen a black conservative go liberal. Maybe it’s like what Harriet Tubman said about seeing hundreds of escaped slaves but never saw one who was willing to go back and be a slave.”

Have you ever had a Poloma cocktail? It’s basically tequila and grapefruit soda (like Squirt) and lime. Squirt makes a ruby red grapefruit soda, which is perfect. I also found this punch recipe, which sounds great for a party:
Mix 2 six-packs of Sanpellegrino Pompelmo grapefruit soda, 20 oz. seltzer water, two cans frozen Bacardi margarita mix, and about 1/2 of a 750 ml bottle of silver tequila. To make it pink (much more festive!), add 2 tbsp or so grenadine. Taste and adjust if needed. Garnish with sliced rounds of limes and large squares of ice. Put out with ice, lime wedges and salt for guests.

This is so absurd. This school is dictating how to behave on cinco de mayo, which isnt anything to celebrate anyways. My family culturally appropriates all cultures because we live in the US. And…..tacos are delicious. Are we not allowed Mexican or sushi anymore either?
“Biggs Garbuio concluded by suggesting that students go to the Facebook page of the the Unity Multicultural Education Center (UMEC), which includes a graphic and link to a website listing “6 Ways To Celebrate Cinco de Mayo Without Appropriating The Mexican Culture.”
The website gives tips which include, “It’s a good thing to ask yourself if what you’re wearing may be offensive to the culture you’re celebrating. And if you have to ask, you should probably refrain,” as well as, “especially don’t say things like ‘drinko’ or ‘eato’ or decide to bust out ‘andale’ or ‘hola.’”
The graphic on the UMEC Facebook provided additional advice for “alternative ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo,” starting with “don’t you dare put on that ‘sombrero.’”
Instead, it suggests that students “learn about the history of Cinco de Mayo and how it became a part of US popular culture.” While they are doing that, it adds, they should try to “acknowledge the stereotypes you have internalized and discover why they are problematic.”
It then recommends that students “support AUTHENTIC Mexican businesses,” but immediately clarifies that “CHIPOTLE DOESN’T COUNT,” apparently because it does not employ “actual Mexican people.”

Seen on Facebook:
A mural painted on a California school depicts an Aztec warrior spearing President Trump’s decapitated head. The artist, Sasha Andrade, claims that the high school approved of the image before she painted it. The mural was part of an event to raise money for scholarships.
“We understand that there was a mural painted at the event this past weekend that does not align with our school’s philosophy of non-violence. We have been in communication with the artist who has agreed to modify the artwork to better align with the school’s philosophy,” MAAC Charter Director Tommy Ramirez said.
The mission statement of the charter school is to “create a safe and accepting environment.” Huh? Sounds like mob rule to me. They approved the mural and were hoping not to get caught. It is a federal crime to threaten the president of the United States. Was this a threat or is it simply freedom of expression? These are the people teaching America’s children. Sick.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

Terms of Entrapment: Trump Should Demand Hillary’s Deal
By Daniel John Sobieski
Again, what’s the crime? Collusion is not a crime, and the only proven collusion is among the Clinton campaign, the DNC, and a British spy working with Russian sources.

If I ever get a chance to shake his hand…
…or to hug Diamond and Silk (Silk first), it would be a day I’d never forget.
