This is one of my favorite film clips. “Waterloo Bridge” is a tragic melodrama starring Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor…the scene is a very sweet moment when the delight of a new love has dawned on them both and they are anticipating something that will be remembered forever.
And the song is so evocative of new beginnings, old lives put behind…and something true not to be forgotten though it may someday be lost….

I thought about sending my sister who lives in B.C. one of those, but was afraid it might be too long in the back when she sat down. She is only about 4’10” now.

This one comes to the bottom of my shoulder blades, but I wouldn’t mind if it was longer. Anyway, there are similar ones that are smaller. It’s really cozy and nice if you have shoulder pain, which I do sometimes.

I am going to have to turn on the heat tonight. These walls don’t have any insulation in them and when the wind blows like it is now and the temp drops like it is going to, it will be cold in here in the morning. You laugh. But, my shower is on an outside wall (uninsulated wall) and even with a little space heater in there the shower is almost too cold to stand in. 😦 Therefore, I take a very quick shower. I know. I won’t find any sympathy here. LOL

Of course I’m sympathetic. We don’t like to be cold, especially as we age. We all get used to our climates, I think, and when it varies a lot it does not feel good.
I used to sell Marvin windows, and they are made in Warroad Minnesota, up on the border. I had to receive the orders when they came in because no one else knew what they were looking at on the shipping paperwork. Anyhow, the poor truckers who unloaded them would be just about to drop in the heat if it was even just in the high 70’s. In the summers when it would be in the 90’s I really was afraid a few of them were going to get sick. In the winter they would be in shorts while we looked like we were heading off to The North Pole.

My sister, who grew up in Florida, then married a very handsome Scotch Canadian, has lived in British Columbia for 35 years, I believe it is. When they visited us in TN about 15 years ago, they came in Sept., when they thought it would have cooled off. LOL It is really hot then. They could hardly stand the heat and couldn’t sleep, even at night with the air conditioner on.

I’m not sure when we warm up. Waukesha is always colder than the surrounding areas. We are at 9° right now. All four of my tires were low because of the cold. I stopped to put air in but only managed to get two up to par before I was frozen so I have to fill the other two today.

I clearly remember temps like that, and these next few days will be a stark reminder that unless I start recycling my imported water bottles and buy that Starbucks multiuse cup I won’t be able to stop the Trump-caused incursion of glaciers on Miami.

I don’t know if it is true. I lean very far to the right of it not being true simply from a logical point of view.
I do believe that President Trump has been planning and setting into motion a lot of his presidency for at least two decades. POTUS is likely in the top 3% of the IQ crowd. He has vast knowledge of his enemies, the enemies of America and he has a plan that encompasses not only the swamp but the land underneath it and the air above it. First and foremost POTUS is a builder. He understands what needs to be done to drain a swamp. He knows where to put the dynamite and where to use a gentle excavator. He has had his canaries in place fro a very long time.
Sending a bunch of the Clinton/Obama clan to Gitmo would be a nightmare for public relations. It isn’t true that President Trump doesn’t care about what people think about him. Not in the political sense, President Trump manipulates what people, his enemies in particular, think about him, to his advantage. President Trump’s advantage is America’s advantage. Not understanding this is a big reason that the Left and the Right (Never Trumpers) continue to hate and flail in their own filth.
President Trump believes in his power of persuasion.
Obama sent billions to savage mullahs, freed ISIS fighter back to the battle field, screwed Americans over their healthcare, voted to let babies die in garbage cans or on steel shelves, let American heroes die, invited promoters of cop killing to the White House, armed Mexican drug traffickers, gave Hezbollah’s cocaine trade free and safe passage into America and on and on and still be beloved by the minions of the Left. The same hold true for Hillary. A prosecutor could find lampshades made from human skin on every lamp in her home and still her minions would love her. It is a deep, deep, evil, a pervasive evil that has corrupted millions of people in America who do not value anything in the world other than their own emotional hypnotic state.
For the most part the blind lovers of Obama/Clinton are a savage people. Granted most are impotent but enough of them are savagely violent that we would have ugly unrest in the streets if President Trump shipped their Dear Leaders to Gitmo. There is no strategic value in such a move.
President Trump never makes big world altering moves because of emotional satisfaction. Never. He uses emotion to motivate not to govern.
There is every reason for hope.
If that f*cking b*stard wins we all hang from nooses.”__H . Clinton
There are plenty of military prisons in America. Many are not on the map.

I agree with that analysis. There is no upside for President Trump to have his fingerprints on their punishment or demise, either for him – or for us.

Perfect Lovely. I do believe that youre right about the depth of crazy on the left. Lots of examples over the past year unfortunately. Staying locked up is the key thing to me. Hanging for treason is best but if its secure, prison will do.
LikeLiked by 4 people
I agree with everything you say. There is nothing to be gained from such a scenario, not for our President, or our country.
I believe what makes President Trump absolutely formidabble is that he has the shewdness and patience to assess his enemies and maneuver them into hanging themselves. He plays a very long game. I don’t believe I have ever seen anyone else that I would personally say that about.
LikeLiked by 3 people
I agree. I would love to see the ticking of his mind. He has an amazing memory and he saves everything. Who knew candidate Trump pulling out Lindsey Grahm’s phone number written in Grahm’s own had would become was quintessential Trump?
I like to imagine them all scrambling, going over and over in their brains what they said to Donald Trump before they knew he was gathering arrows. Makes me smile every time 😊.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! 🙂
Today’s illustration is by the inventor of baby new year! Joseph Christian Leyendecker 1874 Germany–1951 United States (‘J.C.’ or ‘Joe’). He was one of the preeminent American illustrators of the early 20th century. He is best known for his poster, book and advertising illustrations. Of the Leyendecker children, Joseph was the first-born son, then his brother Francis Xavier. His sister arrived after the family emigrated to America. After working in late adolescence for a Chicago engraving firm, J. Manz & Company, and completing his first commercial commission of 60 Bible illustrations for the Powers Brothers Company, J. C. sought formal artistic training at the school of the Chicago Art Institute. After studying drawing and anatomy under John H. Vanderpoel at the Chicago Art Institute, J. C. and younger brother Frank enrolled in the Académie Julian in Paris for a year.
In 1899, the Leyendecker brothers returned to America and set up residence in an apartment in Hyde Park, Illinois. They also had a studio in Chicago’s Fine Arts Building. In that year, Joe received his first commission for a Saturday Evening Post cover – the beginning of his forty-four-year association with the most popular magazine in the country. Ultimately he would produce 322 covers for the magazine, introducing many iconic visual images and traditions including the New Year’s Baby, the pudgy red-garbed rendition of Santa Claus, flowers for Mother’s Day, and firecrackers on the 4th of July. In 1900, Joe, Frank, and their sister moved to New York City, then the center of the US commercial art, advertising and publishing industries. Another important commission was the Arrow Collar Man. No other artist, until the arrival of Norman Rockwell two decades later, was so solidly identified with one publication (The Post). Leyendecker virtually invented the whole idea of modern magazine design. Leyendecker was a chief influence upon, and friend of, Norman Rockwell, who was a pallbearer at Leyendecker’s funeral. Leyendecker’s work inspired George Lucas and will be part of the collection of the anticipated Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. (from Wikipedia & American Art Archives)
My prayer to you is that we all have a healthy New Year filled with joy and peace. That our country, and our world, will come to recognize, and accept that the love and way of Christ is way, the truth, and the light of the world. Please dear God give us wisdom, strength, and perseverance. Amen

Since this is the first day of the New Year, I’m curious to know how you all will be spending today! I consider it setting the tone for what is to come in my personal life, and I’ve chosen Creativity. Should be a fun way to start the New Year, here. I have one of those pressed board initials for my sister-in-law that I’m going to decorate using a “queen” theme. I’ve got lots of bling and a little crown to set atop, but the fun part is going through my artsy-fartsy supplies to see what else I can fill it with! The Queen should love it by the time I’m done, and I get to be reminded of all the found items I’ve collected with which to create. It should be a happy way to begin 2018!
So, what are you all doing to herald in the New Year?? Something fun and gratifying? Hosting a game day party? Reading a good book?

Later I plan to recover the breakfast bar stools to match the chairs I recovered before Christmas.
If I have the energy, I might make the apple coffee cake that nyet sometimes serves us for breakfast. I fixed my oven yesterday (replaced the igniter)! Recipe at link. Rhea made it, and said it was delicious.

Yum! That recipe looks great and I was just looking at some apples on my kitchen table that are almost past their prime – sounds like a nice way to use them up!
Congrats on fixing your igniter – that’s something I am not sure I would attempt. Thank God the apartment complex has a maintenance crew!

It was easy to replace, but involved a good deal of crawling on the floor. If you are interested, here’s the recipe I made for Christmas day:

It was easy to make, and good!

It was really good. I saw the picture the other day and through I should make it again. But we’re still finishing Christmas goodies here, so maybe I shouldn’t.
The second time I made it I was just about to put it in the oven when I realized I had forgotten the apples. so make sure you don’t make my mistake. That was fixable, but the repair didn’t go very well.

I’m sure it was still wonderful tasting, Rhea! You remind me of an old family story. My grandmother’s sister was a newly wed who wanted to bake a pie. She decided on a currant pie and was very happy with herself when she put it in front of her hubby. When he cut into it and lifted a piece out of the pie plate and all the hard, dried little currants rolled out and went everywhere – she forgot to soak the currants before she put them in the crust!!
Needless to say, she never lived that one down and her standard retort was “Well, didn’t say in the recipe that I had to soak them first!”
Happy New Year!

That reminds me of one of my son’s stories. A girl he had been dating wanted to cook a homemade meal for him. She asked what his favorite dessert was and he told her strawberry shortcake.
After the meal she put the little cakes you get at the store in bowls, put whole unsweetened strawberries on top, and then poured unsweetened, unwhipped heavy cream on top.

Holy cow. So now I’m dying to know – did he eat it? However did he not laugh???
Good story!

He did eat it. Totally out of character for my sarcastic and cutting humored son, but he liked the girl, didn’t want to humiliate her, and had a lifetime of his father’s stories behind him.
When we married I literally could not boil water. Melted one of those old aluminum coffee pots because I forgot to put the water in it with the coffee. It caught on fire on the stove eye. My husband took me to his grandmother almost every morning while he went to work, and I learned to cook. But I was a very poor student, even though I tried very hard. I just took forever to learn things. Cooking did not come naturally for me.
Anyhow, my husband, while he never really lied to me, found ways to reassure me that he appreciated my hard work. I did learn to make decent biscuits in a few months, which is a long time, because they aren’t hard at all. It took me over a year to learn to make good gravy though.
One day my husband looked up at me over breakfast and said “This is really very good.” It was one of my best days. 😀 He told me, and our sons, that he knew I would have given up if he had not supported me, and while I might have learned to cook, I would never have put my heart into it.

That is a great story, and what a wonderful gift you’ve given to your sons in family story telling!
Cooking the coffee pot must have scared you to half to death! It’s a wonder you could even get near a stove after that!!
I’ll pay closer attention to when you say a recipe is good from now on. Sounds like you learned from one of the best in your hubby’s grandma. Thanks for sharing that wonderful story, Menagerie!!

I once made apple crisp for the dessert I cooked for a boyfriend – and forgot to put sugar in it. Never did that before or since.

Your story reminds me of a line in a Kenny Chesney song,
The Good Stuff
Eatin’ burnt suppers the whole first year
And askin’ for seconds to keep her from tearin’ up
Yeah man, that’s the good stuff…”

My dad actually disconnected the smoke alarm in the kitchen when my mom cooked. 🙄 Remember that joke about using the smoke alarm to tell when dinner was done? Well, there was some truth in our house and Mama laughed more than anybody else when it was brought up.

I dated a guy who thought that you made grilled cheese sandwiches by toasting two pieces of bread and them smashing 2 slices of American cheese between the bread slices. I thought he was joking at first but nope, that is how he made grilled cheese 😊.

😀 Yay!
The second time, with the screw up, I fixed it by inserting the apples by hand after the fact. It wouldn’t be an issue, but I had already put the crumb topping on and so getting around that was…hard.
The first time I made it I had all the apples cut up and ready to go before I even started the cake. The second time I didn’t even give it a thought.

I did the apples first, as well. Worked out fine. I changed the drizzle – used some of my boiled cider and regular cider instead of the vanilla and water. More apple flavor.

Playing with some of the grandkids so their mom and dad can get an afternoon kid free. Did some time on the rebounder and walking, and I am contemplating making soup for supper.
Also, spending a fair amount of time griping and moaning about the weather, which I will not stop doing until it gets above 25 at least. It’s a sacred calling. Somebody’s gotta do it.

Wow, tell me about the weather. Last night it was 15 here with a wind chill factor of -35! I’m staying in until we get a temperature of at least 25! May have to take to the stairs – my cabin fever has spread to my muscles…
Have fun playing with those grandkids – they are such treasures!!

Czar & I drove the GGS home to Gulfport & are now awaiting the ferry in New Orleans to take us to our old house where we have to wrap the outside pipes for the coming freezing nights. We will then return home to eat cabbage, ham & black eyed peas for traditional New Year’s luck. Today is bright & sun-shiny but high will be below 40 degrees.

Sounds like good weather for a car trip! Hope your cold weather doesn’t get too bad, czarina! Used to live in Oklahoma a long time ago – I’d forgotten about the black-eyed peas tradition! Happy New Year to you and czar!

Happy New Year Pattern. This morning I bundled up, trudged out and started working on clearing my sidewalks…..I was in insulated boots, insulated pants, sheep skin lined parka & was wearing insulated leather gloves and I lasted 10 minutes. It appears that most of my day will be attempting to warm up between bouts of snow removal…..the fun just never stops at my house..:0)

THE DEMOLITION PRESIDENT by Scott Adams
“President Trump has delivered on a number of promises for his base. But there was an impressive amount of breakage along the way. You might say he President Trump did as much demolition as he did construction. The press is doing a good job of telling us what he accomplished in 2017. But they keep leaving out all the stuff he broke that probably needed to be broken. I’ll fix that for you here.”

I have a laugh for all you who are freezing your rears off. My friend called and was upset about how “cold” it was here. She said it was supposed to be 39* in the morning. LOL When I said I needed to take my dog for a walk, she asked if i wasn’t worried that she would get cold. Then she encouraged me to wear gloves. I looked at the thermometer and it was 56*. I did take my doggie out, without gloves or a hat on my head, and yes, my legs did get cold. But, that is what happens when your legs are bare from your knees down.
Even if it was colder I don’t think my little doggie would have a problem. She has long fur and a very thick winter undercoat and fur on the bottoms of her feet. The cold seems to energize her. Well, what we call cold, anyway. 🙄

Wish you could come with us. In a couple of weeks we are taking cruiise to Amber Cove, St. Thomas, San Juan (maybe) and Grand Turks. You know, to get away from the cold. 🙄 Actually, my friend asked me to go because she traded her week at the time share for it. 🙂

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

Did anybody who is interested see the Call the Midwife “Holiday Special”? I didn’t know about it until my friend told me. It is on again on Wed. 1/3 at 3:00 AM if you want to record it. I am watching it now and it is, of course, very good.

Completely O/T, Wooly, but I thought of you today. Ate lunch at a small “destination” restaurant/pub. There must have been a hundred people there, eating indoors, on the patio, and sitting outdoors on the grass. They were actually taking food orders at several places inside the pub. After having read many of your posts on working in the kitchen, I was imagining the semi-controlled chaos on the other side of the wall from me.
They closed down the kitchen for for two and a half hours to get ready for dinner–but were still serving beer and wine to an endless stream of people…

I don’t think I could work the front of the house. I can deal with veteran kitchen workers, cooks, sous chefs, dishwashers, prep-cooks, but actual people? No.
Kidding, of course. I engage with the customers when I’m out there.
Chef actually said those words last week, “Controlled Chaos”. That’s what it is.

It was 6 degrees when I woke up this morning. My back is out, because I hand-shoveled the entire alley the other day, and the snowblower is out, probably needs a new belt. Engine works fine, starts on the first or second pull, as advertised, and runs like a purring kitten. The thing that makes the snow go port or starboard doesn’t work.

We are up to a balmy 9° here. Take care of your back, rest and a cold compress. Sorry Wooly.
