One of my favorites. I have always wondered how hard it was for the human Jesus to grow up around wood and nails with Joseph as his earthly father.

  2. She did know. It’s called the Annunciation.

    (Thanks, Menagerie!) 🙂

I agree, this song is absolutely wonderful. I doubt she knew all the details, like He would walk on water and heal the lame — but she knew a bit.

    Here’s my favorite version:

A little more Catholic commentary on this hauntingly beautiful song. Which is both joyful and troubling for me. But I think that’s a good thing, don’t you? Means I am thinking, processing, growing.

      • Excellent essay. Yep, she knew.

        Why is it troubling?

Everything in Mary’s prayer is happening all around us.

What I think is that it is a beautiful song that someone conceived because they wondered themselves, whether we agree on the theology of the topic or not. Why not just accept it as it is?

It’s like the Three Wise Men. We all know that they weren’t at the manger in Bethlehem, yet most of us display a creche every year showing that very scene – the 3 wise men with their camels and gifts.

I would only add that yes, evangelicals (indeed most Protestants) have a different view of Mary, as they do many things – such as transubstantiation and veneration of the saints. You usually won’t find any images other than that of Christ (if even that) in a Protestant church, unless they are in a stained glass window that illustrates a story from the Bible.

I really don’t see much in Luke 1 that is in definite contradiction with the song’s lyrics. The angel tells Mary that she will conceive and bear a son and that her son would be the Son of God. No details there. Mary, in her prayer, recognizes the greatness of God.

Anyway, I refer to the comment I made to Wooly – it was written by someone who wondered these things, and expressed the truth of the matter. Christ WOULD do and be ALL of those things!

I think it is more important to concentrate on those things we all believe at Christmas time, rather than our differences.

By the way, I find this comment (and many remarks in the comments section) to be snooty and holier-than-thou:

In my mind, the song conjures up an image of Mary as a nonplussed and naive young girl, caught up in events she can’t comprehend or control. This is not surprising, since the song was written by a Protestant Evangelical and this is the prevailing view of Mary among Protestants.

Why is is necessary to demean others in order to strengthen his own point? For that matter, why do so many Roman Catholics look down on Protestants or evangelicals as some type of inferior Christian?

Many on both sides demean others t make their point. Living in the South, where Catholicism is a far, far smaller percentage of the population than in most cities up north, I have constantly been exposed to people who demean my religion and my choice since the day I converted.

My children were actually “saved” several times by so called friends of the family when they were in their care. I would never in a million years have even broached a religious discussion with their children.

So, I guess my point is that both sides have some animosity towards each other. Catholics probably are much more guilty of feeling superior. But few of us believe Protestants are going to hell because they are Protestant. Many, if not most, of the Protestants I know do indeed feel that way about me and my family, to the point that they unapologetically intervened in the lives of my children and interfered with religious choices belonging only to my husband and I.
