Music of the day – Over the river and through the woods …

One of a few things that I remember from kindergarten is learning this song for Thanksgiving. The other two are making clay snakes, and napping on the rug that my mother knit for me.

Some of us will be traveling to be with family or friends tomorrow, so this song seem appropriate, although there isn’t any snow (not yet, but soon). As a little girl, we did travel to “grandmother’s house” for Thanksgiving, so it has memories for me in more than one way.

Did you learn this song in school? Did you learn any other? Share!

I did learn this song in school, and it was actually the basis of fantasies I had as a child. Oh how I wanted to go through the woods in a sleigh in the snow! I had the whole fantasy down, covered in blankets, feeling the chill of each snowflake on my face. Surrounded by a large and close family (mine wasn’t) and looking forward to welcome and warmth and all the holiday scents at grandmother’s.

I had forgotten that childhood fantasy.

Wife of my best bud from Vietnam was one of the last people working for Alabama in Ft Payne. Great group, and they did a huge amount of good for Ft Payne and DeKalb county…right up until they were dumped on by the local pols.

I have no idea what songs I learned in Kindergarten, but I remember getting my nose broken when someone pushed a big table into it. I remember the really cool two classroom schoolhouse I went to, with one bathroom downstairs for both classes to use. I remember we had baby chicks who hatched while we watched. I remember the fire escape was a slide out the window in our room that we couldn’t wait to use the minute the teacher walked out of the room.

I love this song too. I loved going to Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving and all that entailed. My Mom’s family had the BEST COOKS EVER and it was always a treat. Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday.

Thanksgiving was about the food smells and the adults all laughing and the women in the kitchen and the men all outside talking about “man talk” and the chickens and cats all trying to stay away from the kids to keep from getting snatched up. Texas rately had snow, not at Thanksgiving I remember….but we learned LOTS of songs in school.

I remember singing in First Grade with all the class.

    Good Morning to You
    Good Morning to You
    We’re all in our Places
    With sunshiny faces
    For this is the Way
    We start a new day….

last month teaching High School bored Freshmen Algebra on a Monday….I sang this to them and watched them all totally freak and spaz out…..loved every moment of it…..Then I told them that our teacher made us all line up to come in the room in First Grade, in front of her desk and say to her, “Good Morning Miss Lavinia. How are you today”
To which she would reply, “I am doing very well, thank you.”
which was our signal to take a seat for the next raggamuffin to do the same act.

I will never forget it….we were far from perfect…but she absolutely commanded respect and manners.

As a child and well into adulthood, Thanksgiving Day was spent alternating between my father’s family and my mother’s family. There would always be music. If a piano was available, we gathered around it. Otherwise, there would be phonograph music something along the lines of this medley…

No going anywhere on Thursday, I am the cook. I just finished my apple pie. Yes it took me a long time. I made my honey pumpkin pie this morning. Macerating the apples took a long time in the chinois, and I had to take the kiddo to a class while the apples were draining. So much juice out then adding in boiled cider then reducing it to syrup, then pie in the oven. Whew. Getting up and doing veggie prep all morning tommorow.
Happy cooking and happy travels to everyone!

I can remember from kindergarten: making pine cone turkeys…gathering chestnut leaves to paste on construction paper for placemats…the smell of the tannic leaves moldering under the trees around the schoolyard…and smallpox shots, yeah smallpox shots and that plastic bubble they put over it so you could watch the itchy, puss-filled pustule grow and fulminate – neat.
