    Sled dog update. Aliy Zircle did not win the Yukon Quest 300; she came in second by just under an hour. After 40 hours of racing, that’s pretty close. Aliy was running the B Team for this race, the younger dogs needing experience; Allen has the A Team for the 1,000 mile race. Next month, for the Iditarod, she will run the A Team and he will run the younger dogs. The incredible thing is the strength and stamina of these superb canine athletes that allows them to run both big races and finish very well.

    As far as I can tell from the Yukon Quest website, Allen is in second place, about 8 miles behind the leader, Brent Sass. But this is day 3 of a 9 day race. All kinds of strategies are being tested. The trail is hugely mountainous, with all the uncertainties of terrain and weather that brings. Anything can happen.

    Good morning all! Enjoy Mardi Gras! At first I thought it would be fun to post a video about Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but I couldn’t find one that wasn’t totally tasteless.

    Instead, I found this one of Rio Carnivale, which shows the amazing parade, put on by the many samba schools in Rio, with their beautiful costumes.

    Severe weather has hit north Georgia. It’s thirty degrees, snow is falling, we have almost a half inch of it now. You can bet shelves are bare at every store, schools are closed, and mothers are already pulling their hair out. Yes, this powerful storm may bring society to a halt.

    It’s probably only a matter of time until we are eating ashes and huddled under tarps. 😀

    Another view of the Telluride area. I have NOT driven this road, but have been over both the Ophir and Imogene Pass roads. This one is too much for me. One of the Jeep livery drivers told me that one woman in a tour group of his decided to get out and walk during the most challenging part. It is beautiful, however.

    Another agenda behind the Zika crisis?

    Zika prompts urgent debate about abortion in Latin America

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the_americas/zika-prompts-urgent-debate-about-abortion-in-latin-america/2016/02/07/b4f3a718-cc6b-11e5-b9ab-26591104bb19_story.html

    In Colombia, an organized movement to lift restrictions on abortion has gained allies in the government but has run into determined opposition from religious authorities. The same is happening in Brazil — and some doctors say that as a consequence, illegal, back-alley abortions are on the rise.

    Nearly everywhere in Latin America, including in those countries hit hardest by Zika, women who wish to terminate their pregnancies have few legal options. But as U.N. health officials have projected as many as 4 million infections in the Americas this year, activists are pressing lawmakers to act as swiftly as possible to ease rigid restrictions.

    Granted I haven’t been paying a lot of attention to the Zika virus crisis but it sure seems that the media is pushing that there is a definite and established cause cause between the virus and microcephaly.

    Yet;

    http://time.com/4209537/zika-birth-defects/

    How Health Experts Will Definitively Link Zika to Birth Defects

    Scientists still can’t say for certain that Zika causes the birth defect microcephaly, though several experts, including government health officials, agree the current evidence is convincing. “The evidence is highly suggestive but we don’t have definitive proof yet,” U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director Dr. Tom Frieden told TIME in an interview.

    Beyond reaching a definitive conclusion that the virus and the brain damage are linked, scientists also want to know how they are linked. For instance, what is it about the Zika virus that allows it to pass the normally protective placenta? “We identified the Zika virus in brain tissue. That still doesn’t prove that it is the cause or the only cause,” says Frieden.
