By the way, you don’t have to go to Ham Town to get Polish food. On Thanksgiving Eve we ordered carryout from a local restaurant about a mile from here. Food is reasonably priced, everything homemade. We got potato pierogi with sauteed onions, kapusta, sausage, grilled rye bread, plus cheese tortellini in a tomato cream sauce (a little of delicious Italian thrown in for good measure). The kids also shared a “bomb” burrito.

Greenpoint, NYC…. although we do have a good Polish deli near us here in DC, they don’t offer hot take out food. The take-out deli around the corner from the apt in NY was Polish comfort food at it’s best. Now you’re making me hungry. We had frozen pierogi for lunch yesterday and it’s just never quite the same as the fresh ones made from scratch.

If you ever see the Dudek brand in the freezer case, buy them. They are pre-cooked and shrink-wrapped. All you have to do is defrost and pan fry with onions. Almost as good as home made.

I tried the fruit ones for the first time when we were in Krakow. Also very good, but my favorite is still the traditional style.

The Dudek brand is local here, so you might not find them; they are in a red and white box. They make the usual potato, cheese, potato and cheese, but they also make mushroom (delicious) and fruit varieties.

Our local Polish deli carries alot of stuff she sources from Greenpoint but Chicago as well. And the families at the fencing school have a weekly order of fresh Polish specialties, including fresh bread, that is overnighted to the fencing school on Wednesdays. So we’re not “that-that” deprived. I’ll have to ask the lady who puts in the order if she’s heard of them or if the grocery store they buy from carries them.

Just cooked fresh kielbasa (Dearborn brand) that I bought from my local butcher. So good. It’s readily available during the holidays. Kowalski makes good fresh kielbasa too, but it’s more expensive.

Nah, DH has “his” place for Kielbasa he buys from in Greenpoint – they’ve been going to the same butcher for over 40 years. Of course, this is the same butcher that has decided that I’m German and every time I go in to pick up the order, wraps up liverwurst for me as a “gift”. Some tides ya just gotta roll with.

When on barn detail, When going to or coming from, use the same vehicle. When pulling into the driveway, take coveralls/boots off, so I’m standing, regardless of the weather, in my undies, then slipping some shoes on, come into the house thru the basement. Right into the shower to scrub the smell away. My barn clothes are washed bi weekly, local laundromat, pond, or concrete water trough. So my point is…….. I’m either drinking my coffee/breakfast in my Union Suit, or Boxers……..okay that’s it. Now don’t tell anybody, anybody about this………..

Barn clothes. Sigh. Brings up memories. I don’t miss having to deal with Field Ex cammies. Ick. What I never understood (talking about the old school cammies) was why they had to be starched, pressed etc when all you’re going to do is crawl around in the muddy anyhow??

Do you look underneath their keyboards and remove the sticky notes they have so cleverly “hidden there” with their passwords written on them? That was one of the things my DH used to like to do when they would do their “sweeps”.

I work on stuff in the big warehouse sized rooms full of humming boxes that sane people don’t find interesting. I only go into places with people for meetings and the picking up of checks.

I suddenly had a mountain of paperwork, phone calls out the wazoo, had to chase a 500lb pig who decided being free was fun and she also thought it was fun to open a gate so I also had to run over 20 goats back into the pasture. Then I had to help DH unload 1200lbs of feed.
Yesterday wasn’t much better. I think I’m being punished for my lazy day.
So dinner tonight was bacon and tomato sandwiches and leftover stew.

Watching the San Bernardino manhunt and I keep thinking what America is this? We have had our own cities under a police state how many times over the last few years? In part because we are commanded to co-exist with savages, in part because the overlords of DC simply can’t get enough power or money.
How many of the low information lemurs will welcome Martial Law ?
