Meet Pumpkin, a cat who has one very specific obsession: playing fetch with hair ties. Whenever she’s ready to play, Pumpkin brings one to her mom, gets VERY talkative, waits by the stairs, chases it down… then brings it straight back so they can do it all over again. Same routine. Every single day. And eventually, all that fetching has only one possible ending… nap time…

I checked as to what war was going on in 1949, though I had an idea it was something to do with China. AI produced this:

Yes, Simon the cat received the Dickin Medal for his bravery during the 1949 Yangtze Incident while serving aboard HMS Amethyst. He is the only cat to have ever been awarded this prestigious medal, which is often referred to as the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.

Simon displayed remarkable courage and resilience during wartime.

      • Service on HMS Amethyst — Simon served aboard the ship during the Yangtze Incident, where he helped control the rat population and comforted injured sailors.
      • Dickin Medal Award — He was awarded the Dickin Medal in 1949, recognizing his exceptional bravery and service.
      • Legacy — Simon became a celebrity after the incident, celebrated in British and world news for his contributions.
      • Burial — He was buried with full military honors in the PDSA Animal Cemetery, alongside other medal recipients.
